Deep Dungeon III: Yuushi Heno Tabi  Square (Hummingbird Soft)1988"Deep Dungeon III", similar to its both predecessors, is a difficult old-school dungeon crawler RPG. More dungeons, more towns and instead of a single character you control a party of four characters. Standard dungeon crawler elements everywhere. A bit more story or surprising elements would have been good. In every regard an average game for fans of that particular RPG sub-genre only.***Deep Dungeon III: Yūshi he no Tabi is the third installment in the Deep Dungeon series and the first to be released on the Famicom. This is the first Deep Dungeon title to offer the player a world to explore spanning multiple dungeons and multiple towns. It also allows the player to create their own party with up to three companions in addition to the hero character, with a choice of ranger, magician or priest for each character. Though the player can dismiss a character once the game has started, they will only be able to replace that character if they meet another pre-created playable character in one of the dungeons. However, the game will still end as soon as the protagonist "swordsman" character is defeated. This game retains the player-adjustable level-up stats from the first game, as well as the feature that removes randomized encounters if the player is at a significantly higher experience level than needed for their current location. One exclusive and rather annoying feature of this game engine is that sometimes the player character will fumble (remove) their equipped weapon, wasting that character's turn. If the player wishes to re-arm their weapon, it will cost the player another turn. This is the only game in the series to award the player money (Gold) when defeating enemies. All other games will force the player to re-enter maps to collect respawning chests for money or items (for resale) if they want to gold farm.

Final Fantasy II  Square1988Very good RPG. Played this back when I was but a child. ^^ Up to now I still love it.***1player only
SQF-FY ファイナルファンタジーII/Final Fantasy II published 1988-12-17 by Square in Japan.
Final Fantasy II: Dark Shadow Over Palakia was going to be the title of the USA publishing.
MSRP: 6,500円

This is the second game in Square's popular Final Fantasy series. It was released only in Japan (the Japanese Final Fantasy IV was released as Final Fantasy II in the U.S.). The game emphasizes the storyline more than the first game: four young refugees from a conquered kingdom join a rebel movement in hopes of striking back at their oppressors. Players must engage in conversion collecting key words to ask key people about in order to advance the plot. Character's have identities and personalities unlike in FF1. This is emphasized by character portraits of all the player characters, the fact that there are many player characters that come and go as their role in the plot dictates, and the frequent use of player characters' names by NPC's. Familial relationships between characters are also frequently noted. The graphics aren't terribly advanced beyond FF1's, but the experience system was completely revamped. Instead of gaining EXP and levels, the heroes gain points in the abilities that they use. Attacking a lot increases strength. Getting hit a lot increases defense. Casting the Fire spell a lot increases the spell's power. Using an axe increase axe fighting ability. An interesting concept (usually reserved for computer RPGs), but one that makes for a difficult game (as long as the endemic exploits of this game's system are not utilized). A translation to English patch for the ROM is available.

This is the Final Fantasy volume that introduced Chocobos and Cid
(work in progress)
A note about these codes. The algorithm of the experience system is designed to reach natural equilibrium through minor adjustments, not just for every stat but also their relations to each other. It is not a fault tolerate system and tampering may lead to large numbers in bad places (inn costs 65535 gil), large number rollovers (your 65535 HP just became 1 HP), and values froze at zero permanently (0 MP, you are no longer a magic user)

[Zerothis]***Sequel of the successful Final Fantasy. It has a really good storyline and a new system where you have to improve abilities/skills by using them, instead of gaining XP and levels in the traditional way. Still a good RPG, but I really didn't like the way the skill system seduced you to find ways to make leveling up easier by e.g. hitting your own party members. It somehow ruined the whole pace of the game.

JJ: Tobidase Daisakusen Part 2  Square1987About 9 months after the initial release of "Tobidas Daisakusen" Square already released this sequel. Technically the game is alright with fluent fast graphics and all, but the game is a bit too similar to the first game and does not feel "fresh" anymore despite some better looking background graphics.***SQF-JJ. JJ was only sold in Japan.

Only 8 months and 5 days after Tobidase Daisakusen was published in Japan, came the sequel. This time under the Square label instead of DOG. Also, the game came on cartridge rather than Famicom Disk. Levels are laid out differently and not all of them are divided by 4 (some have 2 or 3 sections.). Enemies are different and a graphic face lift and a few minor changes fleshes out many details that were not present in the original, such as a jetpack that allows JJ to fly for the boss levels and enemies that make a little more sense (ooo, look out for the TVs in Tobidase Daisakusen I, for instance). Also the game is a bit harder, as you cannot slow down or speed up. Timing your jumps is now done only by pressing and releasing the button at the right moments. Nothing too new here, its just an upgrade over the original. Also note, that the USA version of Tobidase Daisakusen (3-D World Runner) was released less then two months before the improved JJ, but we still got the older game here in the 'states.

1 player only.
This is sort of a 3rd person view run-and-jump platform game, but also a rail shooter. Jumping for specific distances is your main required skill, but dodging left and right is also important. Shooting is emphasized more than in the first game and is the only way to defeat bosses. JJ is automatically given a weapon and flying jet pack before facing a boss. Other minor enemies can be shot also. The game constantly scrolls you forward without any speed variation. But you can stop by colliding with solid objects, preferably ones that are not lethal. You will need to dodge and or jump enemies, solid columns, flaming columns, eyeballs, and canyons. There are coils to aid in jumping, tanks to collect for points, special items, hidden items, and warp jetpacks. JJ dolls are rare and give extra lives. A gun item enable shooting; an ability you lose if you get hit or while in the air. Eyeballs are deadly. Stars make you invincible for a time. Stopwatches add extra time (did I mention the time limit?); which will be required for some of the levels. Shield boots gives you a 1 hip point force field, giving you a total of 2 HP :) Grabbing additional shield boots will result in 500 bonus points. The vast majority of special items are hidden. Tanks are just for points and are laid out horizontally, vertically, and surrounded by hazards to make them more challenging to grab. Precise vertical jump control is necessary to collect ever tank. Getting tanks is not required. There are secret stages containing only tanks and items (grab the warp jet pack). Each level is divided into 2 to 4 sections (checkpoints basically) and there is a boss at the end of each level. Gaining the jetpack at the end of the levels allows you to fly during boss fights, which seem to be directly taken from [game=Space+Harrie]Space Harrier[/game] more so than the rest of the game. Plug in and wear a pair of shutter glasses and hit the select key to get and added effect of depth. Music is by Nobuo Uematsu who would later compose for the Final Fantasy games.

Live A Live  SquareSoft1994Game description from Aeon Genesis:

Live A Live is truly unique when it comes to RPGs. Rather than have one long continuous storyline, LAL throws a whole bunch of rather sort (but good) stories at you. Each chapter is set in a different time period, and each has unique gameplay aspects (read peoples' minds in the Near Future chapter, sniff out monsters in the Prehistoric chapter, learn your enemies' moves in the Present Day chapter, etc.) In the end, they're all tied together. The story is fairly generic, but it's told very well, and a couple of the chapters throw you some real curve-balls. Suffice to say, the game is really worth your time. Just don't spoil it for yourself with a walkthrough!

Rad Racer comes action-packed with revolutionary 3-D technology and 3-D glasses (they're free inside) that will have you really believing you're in the middle of a cross country rally race-cruising along at 200 miles per hour!Rad Racer takes you through 8 treacherous race courses including the Los Angeles Nightway, the San Francisco Highway and the Grand Canyon. Choose the Ferrari and you'll enter a Super Machine competition where you'll race against Corvettes and Lamborghinis. Select the F-1 Machine and you'll compete against incredibly fast cars. Whether it's Ferrari or F-1, 3-D or Regular mode, Rad Racer's hair-pin curves, dare-devil turns and realistic action will bring home all the fun and excitement of real rally racing. Think you're up to it? Then drivers start your engines. It's Rad Racer!***"Rad Racer" is as much an OutRun clone for the NES as it can get. You race on eight tracks against a time limit with checkpoints. Each of the tracks has different backgroung graphics, there are three tunes to choose from (which can even be changed while driving) and you can choose your car from either a ferrari sports car or a formula 1 style racing car. The game is fast and all elements are decently implemented, but it also feels monotonous at times. Each stage features only one set of car graphics and the incoming "car waves" reminded me often enough of the old game [game=#5165]Enduro[/game].

The 3-D Battles of WorldRunner  Acclaim Entertainment (Square)1987
[52]***"3D World Runner" (formerly released in Japan as "Tobidase Daisakusen" for the Famicom Disk System) looks suspiciously like a [game=#192]Space Harrier[/game] clone, but for the most of the time it is not. First of all you are running instead of flying and gameplay is more about jumping over chasms and avoiding obstacles and monsters. Only during the boss battles it is the typical flying and shooting gameplay. The game works well for what it wants to be. The graphics are nice and fast and the controls are ok.***SQF-TDS Tobidase Daisakusen published on Famicom Disk 1987-03-12 by DOG (Square) in Japan (see the Famicom Entry, this game apparently was not published for the Japanese Famicom in cartridge format)

Thexder  Square (Bits Laboratory)1985Thexder was a very successful action game on early Japanes homecomputers. As a result it was ported to the Famicom. You are controlling a robotic mecha which can transform into a flying ship. The goal of each level is to find the exit. Easier said than done, because the game can confuse with its labyrinthine design. Gameplay is interesting, but the controls are not optimal. Shooting as a mecha is semi-automatic, you press the fire button and the aiming is done automatically. A very challenging game. NESlabelimageminimize
