Windward Tasharen Entertainment2012***Looks like Sid Meyer's Pirates, only modernerish. Choose your war ship, sail into battle, fire you cannons.

This is an obscure release; the Windows and Mac version are on Desura, Steam, and Tasharen's website. You'll only find the Linux version hidden on Tasharen's website at http://tasharen.com/windward/WindwardLinux.zip. UPDATE: Eventually released on Desura then GOG.***The Game
Windward is a fast-paced naval combat game set in the fantasy time period similar to the mid-17th century. It features a variety of different ships to choose from, different maps to play on by yourself or with your friends, randomly generated booty to discover, talents to earn, and plenty more.
Features
Variety of skirmish maps with different objectives
Different ships to choose from
Experience from combat results in levels
Random items drop in combat
Full multiplayer support
As a fun side-feature, your ship will appear in other player's games (even single-player), so they will either praise you or curse your very name, depending on which side your ship ends up on and how uber you've made it

All of those features are already in place. Going forward, for those in search of a longer single-player and co-op experience, there will be the Campaign mode, where a huge procedural world gets generated just for you, complete with factions controlling territory that you can work with or plot against, do tasks for, discover treasure, or of course -- pillage everything in sight.

Tenka no Goikenban: Mito Koumon  Sunsoft1987This game is based on a long-running television series playing in Japan taking place during the Edo period. It's one of those games where its really difficult to figure out what you actually have to do. You run around in a Japanese town hitting people, talking with people, collecting items. But for what purpose I couldn't find out. And information about this is sparse. The game features lots of text for an "action" game. The towns are detailed enough and set the right atmosphere for the historical setting. It even features some speech-samples, all thanks to being one of the first 2Mbit cartridges for the Famicom. However that lack of direction and being clueless of what to actually do in this game made it unplayable for me. NESlabelimageminimize

Spoils of War  German Design Group1991Like most of GDG's games, Spoils of War is a strategic/managerial wargame.

You command your conquistadors in exploration, colonization and battle on land and sea. Although the setting strongly reminds of the Spanish occupation of America in 15th and 16th century, the game is settled on a fictive planet called Paradise, in the Orion Sector.

Like in Heirs to the Throne, gameplay is divided into different phases and activities. You explore and conquer new lands, build cities and havens and try to hold your lands against your opponents, or, even better, try to conquer their territories.

Battles are very tactical and strategical, as troop experience as well as supplies have a strong impact on battles, too.

For up to 4 players, the game offers scalable difficulty levels, strong computer AI, an economical as well as different land- and sea-battle systems and even a savable Hall of Fame for the best conquistadors.***

Port Royale 3 Kalypso Media (Gaming Minds)2012The Caribbean, in the turbulent 17th Century. The mighty kingdoms of Spain, England, France and the Netherlands fight over the colonies. And there you are, a young sea captain whose only goal is to become the most powerful man in the New World. To achieve that goal, you may choose one of the two available campaigns: will you become an Adventurer or a Trader?

If you chose the way of the Adventurer, lead an unforgiving campaign for the conquest of the seas: invasion, piracy, bounty hunting, raiding; do whatever it takes to build your own empire in the Caribbean. And of course, trade will have a less important role to play in your rise.

The way of the Trader is, on the opposite, mostly about developing your riches and your economic power. To be the most powerful Trader of the New World, you have to create trade routes, build industries and develop the economy of the colonies.

Of course, in Free Play mode, you can mix both of those in any way you want, letting you create your own unique and exciting story.

For the first time in the acclaimed Port Royale series, you are not alone in the beautiful and seemingly so peaceful seas of the Caribbean. The Multiplayer mode allows up to 4 players to play through LAN or over the Internet. Develop a successful trading company, lead your ships in beautiful 3D naval battles and force your opponents to their knees!

Key Features:
* Two different single player campaigns: Adventurer and Trader
* Naval battles, raids, plundering and invasions await the Adventurer, while the Trader will develop trade routes and the economy to earn glory, fortune and power
* 16 different ship types, such as powerful Galleons or versatile Frigates
* Organize trade with 60 different cities such as Port-au-Prince or Tortuga
* A competitive Multiplayer mode for up to 4 players
* A comprehensive trade system, with supply and demand dynamically setting the price of goods and wares, like in the real world
