Spoils of War | German Design Group | 1991 | Like most of GDG's games, Spoils of War is a strategic/managerial wargame. You command your conquistadors in exploration, colonization and battle on land and sea. Although the setting strongly reminds of the Spanish occupation of America in 15th and 16th century, the game is settled on a fictive planet called Paradise, in the Orion Sector. Like in Heirs to the Throne, gameplay is divided into different phases and activities. You explore and conquer new lands, build cities and havens and try to hold your lands against your opponents, or, even better, try to conquer their territories. Battles are very tactical and strategical, as troop experience as well as supplies have a strong impact on battles, too. For up to 4 players, the game offers scalable difficulty levels, strong computer AI, an economical as well as different land- and sea-battle systems and even a savable Hall of Fame for the best conquistadors.*** [106]*** [97]*** [37] | Amiga | labelimagesubject |

Pirates! | Ultra Games;Palcom Software (Rare) | 1991 | It is important to note the original version of Pirates! was based on hollywood style pirate movies rather than historical fact. Any history present was added as details to the game after the game design had been finalised. In the NES version, "tobacco" is replaced by "crops". But this is are very minor alteration when you consider that the major factor and historic fact of slavery offers no overt effect on gameplay; no versions of Pirates! deals with this history at. | NES | labelimageminimize |
Tenka no Goikenban: Mito Koumon | Sunsoft | 1987 | This game is based on a long-running television series playing in Japan taking place during the Edo period. It's one of those games where its really difficult to figure out what you actually have to do. You run around in a Japanese town hitting people, talking with people, collecting items. But for what purpose I couldn't find out. And information about this is sparse. The game features lots of text for an "action" game. The towns are detailed enough and set the right atmosphere for the historical setting. It even features some speech-samples, all thanks to being one of the first 2Mbit cartridges for the Famicom. However that lack of direction and being clueless of what to actually do in this game made it unplayable for me. | NES | labelimageminimize |

Die Fugger II | Sunflowers | 1996 | Germany in the year 1600 - the empire of the Fuggers is destroyed. Now it's your turn to rise it again. "Die Fugger 2" is a turn based trading simulation. During the game you can expand your business over 16 towns and try to get emperor of the country. Trading is the way you'll get your money. But it's not that easy, your trails may be plundered, your stocks may burn down, or anything else. It's also possible to get your own pirate hideouts to plunder your competitors goods. But be careful, if they find out who did that, you may end up in prison. When you claim a higher political position it's possible for you to change laws, rise taxes and many more. This all sounds very complex, but after a few hours of playing it's quite easy to handle as the menues are clean and direct. | MS-DOS | labelimagesubject |
