American McGee's Alice  Electronic Arts (Rogue Entertainment)2000Lewis Carroll's 19th-century fantasy has been reinvented many times, most famously by Walt Disney. And now American McGee, one of the designers behind the Quake and Doom series, issues his addition to the Looking Glass legends with American McGee's Alice. Players take on the role of a wiser, more industrious heroine who sets out in this third-person 3-D action game to free Wonderland from the tyranny of the Queen of Hearts. Alice will confront a host of weird creatures in surreal settings and solve numerous puzzles through more than 15 levels of gameplay.***stock sounds — at least one is heard in an early surreal level where a huge door frame passes around the level (it does this pass repeatedly), the sound is played during the pass.***May (quite likely actually) fail to start up on XP and newer operating systems (as it does for me), but works fine after you use a No-CD crack. When Alice responds to a mysterious summons to return to Wonderland, the place is barely recognisable. Something has gone very wrong. Undaunted by the diseased atmosphere, confusion and mortal danger that surrounds her, Alice commits to set it right. Embark on a twisted journey to save a wonderland gone bad... but be warned if you're gonna chase this rabbit - you'd best go rmed...

* Stunning third-person, 3D action on an enhanced version of Quake III technlogy.
* A living breathing Wonderland that is as deadly as it's inhabitants.
* Twisted renditions of characters from the original Alice Adventures.
* Defend yourself with a collection of the most deadly toys ever imagined.
* Solve devious puzzles and labyrinthine mazes.
* Battle sadistic card guards, demonic fire imps, ravenous jabberspawn and many more.
* Hugely atmospheric score composed specifically for the game by Chris Vrenna founder member of the Nine Inch Nails.
[Box blurb]***A rather bizarre, if cleverly different, game loosely based on 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass', but with black and macabre twists, the knife-wielding Alice was far from Carroll's original interpretation.

City Adventure Touch: Mystery of Triangle  Toho (Compile)1987A game based on the highschool/sports manga and anime series "Touch". Your goal is to rescue ten cats which are hidden somewhere in a huge city and its surroundings. You are controlling two male characters at the same time (another female character is constantly following you around). That makes controlling the characters very complicated. You have to buy items from time to time to open up new part of the game world or to beat some bosses. The game is not very playable. Worst thing is the very limited inventory space. In order to free some space you have to drop several items from time to time. But this can only be done in certain houses! Also, shuffling through the inventory items is bothersome. The city is a huge maze with many streets, a forest, beach etc. Its hard to find your way around without a map and walkthrough. Compile should have kept with making great shoot'em ups instead of doing such a below average Action-Adventure game. NESlabelimageminimize
CrossFire author2001A fantasy medieval themed MORPG with a set of races and classes similar to angband and nethack. There are multiple graphical clients to chose from that will show more information than text based clients (stacks of objects on the floor for instance). Use of text remains heavy in all clients and more closely follows a the example of text adventure interpreters than simple commands. Players will need to converse with NPCs. But many typed commands are simple as well and players can bind any command to a keystroke. Also, there are a variety of shortcuts that can be preformed with the mouse. The adventures provided really depend on which server the player chooses to play on. Most servers allow multiple characters and they remain attached to the server where they were created. Initially there was no gender option provided but version 1.10 added this option. Many servers continue to use the monogender mode. Generally servers include a tutorial map, several interlinked preset maps, and attached maps that are randomly generated within a set or constrictions (themed dungeons). Players find a public bed (or buy their own real estate to place a bed in) to sleep until they want to return to the game, which is a quit-save. Any items they left lying around may be stolen, but their inventory and their character are safe when sleeping. A variety of locked storage, security systems, guard animals, or guard NPCs are available for things that just won't fit into inventory. Maid NPCs are also an option. Player vs player is decided per server. The game allows for servers to have PvP zones and for players to mutually agree to PvP (outside of zones). But absolute prevention of PvP is apparently technically impossible for anyone determined to circumvent the safeguards as sings repeatedly warn players that PvP is forbidden in places where technical limitation are already in place. There is an extensive skills system as well. Skills increase by using them. For instance, read a book that is within your literacy skill level and you will ear literacy experience points. This only works once per book, btw. There is no combat mode. Attacks are in real time. While characters can have all manor of attacks at their disposal, all melee attacks are done without visual feedback. Text feedback is given instead. Ranged attacks show the projectile, but are otherwise identical to each other as melee attacks are.

Find towers and dungeons. Hack up monsters. Gather loot. Sell loot. Practice skills. Repeat.

For POSIX/X11 and/or GTK systems. Confirmed to run on Ubuntu and IRIX. RPM available.

In this role-playing adventure you are the Dragon Warrior!***"Dragon Quest" has its roots in the Ultima series, but rumour has it that Ultima was too complicated and complex for the Japanese videogaming market. So Dragon Quest, with its simple but very addictive structure, was an instant hit and the start for the most successfull RPG series in Japan. And it is pretty good. Not as non-linear and confusing than many early CRPGs. Nice graphics and music as well.***Product Number: NES-DQ-CAN NES-DQ-USA
Dragon Warrior is called Dragon Quest in Japan. The Japanese version (1986) used passwords but the US (1990) and Canadian versions used battery backed save RAM
A pen and paper RPG called Dragon Quest had already been published in the United States. For copyright reasons, the name Dragon Warrior was used. However, it turns out there was also Dragon Warriors RPG in existence at the time.

The English version was translated and published by Nintendo and strictly uses Early Modern English in conversational dialogs. Often mistakenly called King James English or Shakespearian English, but those styles were in fact derived from the Early Modern style (King James style also borrows extensively from Middle English). Early Modern English is in fact a bit more understandable than King James or Shakespearian English, for those who understand the contemporary Modern English of the late 20th century. The Japanese names for the characters and locations were changed into English names that better fit with the Early Modern English and a northern Europeanish location. The changes are influenced by the Arthurian Legends. The Nintendo version also made significant improvement in graphics and game mechanics. The number of menus was reduced. The protagonist could face multiple directions (instead of south only). Direction of talking and actions was automatically based on the direction the protagonist was facing rather than needing to be manually specified. Shorelines looked a bit like breaking waves instead of abrupt hard edges into sea water.

Dragon Warrior 64 UniKorn ProDucKions2020Kill monsters in 1-on-1 turn based combat to gain gold and experience. Explore the overworld. Enter dungeons to find treasure. Buy better weapons and armor. Rescue the Princess. Recover Erdrick's ball of light. Defeat The Dragon-lord.

A faithful reproduction of the original NES Dragon Warrior with only minor (non-gameplay) alterations save one. For minor example, in the beginning of both versions, the hero does not begin with weapon nor armor. Regardless, the hero is depicted holding a weapon and wearing armor in the NES version. This clone begins with the hero unarmed in a loin cloth and depicts him in a loin cloth without a weapon in hand. Equipping a weapon will then depict the hero with one and likewise armor. Random events are calculated differently. Again, the menu interface, all items, spells, quests, monsters, and such are the same. The only difference is the newly available Erdrick's Shield.

At the time of this article's publishing the game was at version 1.3 and there were several minor bugs. Only one of which required reverting to a previous save game.

LittleBIGPlanet Sony (Media Molecule)2008Release was apparently delayed because of Qur'an references in one or more of the songs in the game.***Will be published by SCE International, SCE America, SCE Australia, SCE Japan and SCE Europe.***The LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character's powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve – requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As players begin to explore, their creative skills will grow and they will be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings – the first step to sharing them with the whole community.

Characters have the power to move anything in this glued and stitched-together landscape; they have the power to design, shape and build both objects and entire locations for others to play.

There's no complicated level editor; all of these skills can be learnt by simply playing the game. Creativity is part of the gameplay experience and playing is part of the creative experience. Players can make their world as open or as secretive to explore as they like.

When it's ready, they can invite anyone within the LittleBigPlanet community to come and explore their patch – or can go and explore everybody else's.

Metro-Cross  Namco (Now Production)1986Metro-Cross is a port of a not too well known arcade game by Namco. The gameplay is very simple. You have to run from left to right and make it to the finish before the time runs out. The course is filled with various obstacles and a few extra items. The game is just average. I expected a bit more, because I played the Atari ST version in the past and I liked that quite a bit. But in the Famicom version you don't have much time to react because the player character is placed too much towards the center of the screen. Although I must admit that this problem is the same as in the arcade version. So it all relies on how good you memorize the levels. There are not much different background graphics or other graphical elements and the same music plays again and again. This game is good for a try or two, but becomes boring after that rather soon. Micky Mouse along with Minnie are off to rescue the kidnapped Alice from Alice in Wonderland (the Japanese title translates Micky Mouse: Adventures in Wonderland). This is a non-scrolling platformer with some adventure elements (locked doors and keys for them.)

If you open the North American cartridge, (not recommended), you can see a Mickey Mouse silhouette on the circuitboard above pin 5.

Both version feature Disney villains as the bosses for each level. But the Japanese version uses Alice in Wonderland baddies while the US version uses a wider mix of Disney characters. In the Japanese versions, Mickey shoots balls of magic (sorcerer's apprentice style) but inexplicable uses Shuriken. There are other minor variations.

Both controller 1 controls Mickey and Minnie. Controller 2 controls Minnie and Mickey. This feature can be exploited to have each character operate somewhat independently. Minnie can fall down holes and lose a life, but is otherwise suffers no permanent effects from other hazards.

Mickey's Safari in Letterland Hi-Tech Expressions;Playtronic (Beam)1993NES-M8-USA Developed by Beam Software and published by Hi-Tech Expressions in 1993-03
1 player only

Play the anthropomorphic Mickey Mouse as he travels to Letterland and 'hunts' letters in this platform game. The letters are needed for Ludwig von Drake's museum where Goofy and Mickey are currently employed. Goofy chauffeurs Mickey between the 6 regions with different terrains in Letterland; Snowy mountains and icy surfaces in Yukon, cliffs, water, and tropical beaches in Caribbean, swamp and water in Swamp, water and forest in Forest, water and jungle in Jungle, and desert and pyramid interiors in Pyramid. Each Every level has 3 letters of a single 3 letter word, each hidden in a letter diamond, that Mickey optionally must find and 'capture' in a butterfly net. If he finds all 3, he will spell the world after the level ends while an illustration of the word is shown (hat, leg, arm, etc...). Mickey can say all 26 letters, laugh, and exclaim "oh boy" in synthesized speech that actually sounds like Mickey. The level ends when Mickey nets the stone slab containing an ancient fossilized letter. Goofy also operates a Rube Goldberg type of machine that cleans and preserves the fossils before Mickey puts them in the museum display. This is also part of the game, the player must match the letter to it place in the display. There are 26 levels in expert mode, 4 or 5 per region, one for each letter of the English alphabet. Beating the game treats the player to an 8-bit instrumental rendition of The Alphabet Song (Mozart's Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star).

It is impossible to die but Mickey will show comical discomfort at contacting enemies or falling long distances. This is an extremely easy aimed at people who are not yet or are still learning the English alphabet. However, finding all the letters for the bonus words involves more advanced exploration and problem solving skills. A few letters are in places where they player may not be able to return to once they pass a certain point in the level and so careful planning is required to achieve this goal.

The mushrooms and hippos from Disney's movie Fantasia and Monkeys from the movie Junglebook, make cameos.

All the creatures listed are passive or inconsiderate to Mickey's presence, though all can be made useful. The living snowman and the anthropomorphic mushrooms are the only fantastically presented creatures.

Hint, swing the net just before hitting the ground to avoid 'hurting' Mickey.
Hint, contacting a creature or a corner of a surface tosses Mickey into the air with the height depending on several factors.
Hint, every level has an animal or apparatus that will cause Mickey to jump extra high if the jump button is held.
If you press Select on the map screen you can enter a mode where Mickey says the letter the player points to when they press a button. Pressing select again returns to the map screen. This might be in the instruction book but can still be consider a secret since people just learning their alpha bet would not be expected to read the instruction book.
Someone should verify the details of the hidden mode as stated in the instruction booklet.

Note: the game effectively pauses when drawing, and the only limit you have then is how large your ink pot (magic pool) is. Ink is restored quite fast when not drawing, so there's very little reason to upgrade it (unless some later puzzles require more). Of course, being brush heavy in the fighting will make you want to upgrade it. This is also works great for defending yourself when you otherwise feel like you can't (grow trees between the attackers and you, slash at the enemies or the stuff they throw at you, etc.)

Feeding animals gives 1-5 points of praise/adoration (xp) per animal, though single feeding affects the whole herd, flock, or whatever.***Other languages are only present on the game box and manual (in-game voices/text still in English), at least in European releases.

The Japanese title 大神 actually reads "great deity" rather than "wolf", but the pronunciation (and transliteration) is the same as with 狼 which stands for "wolf". So, in effect, it's a pun for "great wolf deity".***In Okami, the player takes the role of the mythical sun goddess Amaterasu, in the form of a wolf. Her task is to restore color (or 'life') to the world by destroying the monsters who have stolen it. Since Amaterasu is a deity, there are naturally people who worship her and people who don't. The more people who worship her (as a result of her restoring color and doing other good deeds for them), the more powerful she becomes.***In Ōkami, the legendary monster Orochi has come back to life and turned the world into a wasteland. To restore the earth's natural order and beauty, players assume the role of wolf-embodied sun god Amaterasu and participate in numerous action packed battles against the ominous beings they encounter. However, conquering these impending enemies is no small feat. Amaterasu will travel through different regions of the world to regain her 'Celestial Brush' powers, all the while revitalizing everything in her path. Using an innovative control scheme, gamers can slash away at enemies, use various brush strokes to solve puzzles, create pathways, chop down trees or turn night into day. The real-time fighting system not only involves assorted brush techniques, but also myriad of specials attacks typically not associated with the physical prowess of a normal wolf.

Featuring a visually stunning art style, Ōkami comes alive through beautiful scenic 3D levels that have the appearance and texture of paper scrolls brushed with watercolor-like calligraphy art. Throughout the vibrant and distinctive surroundings, players must also interact with a dynamic cast of characters, building their faith to uncover clues and hints. The blend of stylized graphics and unique gameplay will result in a rich and dynamic experience never seen before.***great art style

Sack of Flour, Heart of Gold ?2002The box has a UPC-like barcode with numbers "0-12345-67891-0". Both the code and the numbers are fake.***Sack of Flour had spent his whole life on the plains
of Skibo Farms, with its wide treeless spaces. His life was
simple. That is, until he overheard one day that he was
to be ripped open and his insides baked and eaten!!!!!!!!
In a panic, and not knowing why the world was all of a
sudden against him, he decided to flee the farm and
take his chances in the great world beyond. Without
warning, all of his old farm buddies had turned against
him: the Goombulls, Leytuhses, Tododyles, and even the
Carrots!

Sack was also amazed by the appearance of
doorways with strange markings on top of them. More
remarkable still was their ability to transport Sack
from the Cosmos of Lightness in which he had always
lived, back and forth between it and the Cosmos of
Darkness, a shadow world. Determined that there is
some connection between Sack's recent happenings,
the zombie-ization of the worlds produce and livestock,
and the appearance of the gateways, he has set out to
find the truth and save his own lofe. He may just get
more than he bargained for.....

Xari Arena Atari1983CX-52xx (No product number). Prototype. North America NTSC. 1 player or 2 players simultaneous dynamically cooperative or competitive. 1 computer player is provided as an option.
It [[gameid:261 Breakout]] in reverse. Your walls are being attacked by Xari emerging from the well in the center of the screen. Each player can catch up to three fireballs. When you ram a Xari, it is destroyed and you lose a fireball. Ramming without any fireballs will stun your paddle. If you have three fireballs then additional ones will bounce off your paddle just like [[gameid:4033 Pong]] or [[gameid:261 Breakout]]. Also, the holding the bottom button will make your paddle reflective. The top controller button will activate a temporary shield for your wall. You one reserve shield is added every time you complete a level. If you defeat a level, a bunch of Xari will emerge from the well, play music, do a capitulation dance (or perhaps its a bone curse dance?), then commit hari-kari. There are 32 levels and beating them all game reveals a secret message. The computer player is quit good, able to continue playing as high as level 17. But it tends to save it's shields even when being hit by Xari. You can try and send fireballs into your opponents wall to score points; but having another paddle blasting Xari is well worth using a cooperative strategy. This game is also in hires mode and multi color (very rare). Both players score points, and so do the Xari (perhaps this was planned to be a 3 or 4 player game, paddles verse Xari?). The game has a rock music score that plays during levels. Xari Arena was ready for publishing on 1983-08-30, but wasn't. There are two other prototypes of this game that have other features. One of them has a fully analog flex-o-paddle so that players can aim the ball, slow it, down or speed it up by curving their paddle just right at the right moment. This other prototype also doesn't have fireball collecting.

Bug:
Very rarely, fast moving Xari (on higher levels) can become trapped in the well. These cannot be hit, therefore the level becomes unbeatable.
