Magnovox is a division of Phillips.

The Quest for the Rings is an action-adventure game that uses a game board as well has on-screen action. All the statistical elements and logistics, collectible items, time limit, overworld map, locations and such are tracked by the board game element while the 2-player simultaneous action battles take place on the computer screen. It was a cleaver workaround to increase the depth of gameplay when no existing hardware wasn't suitable.
A complete set includes:

A large game box with cover art and inside cover art

A gold labeled game cartridge

Large gold colored manual

A fold out game board that's 4 times the box size when unfolded

A keyboard overlay

7 Castles containing The Dungeons

6 Castles containing Crystal Caverns

6 Castles containing Shifting Halls

4 Castles containing The Infernoes

3 Dragon Monster Tokens

3 Nightmare Monsters Tokens

10 Ring Tokens

1 Quest Token

1 Hourglass chip

8 "Possessions" chips

A Quest for the Rings themed game catalog advertising the Master Strategy Series.(this last item is not always considered essential to a complete set by collectors)
For a 3 or more player game, once the keyboard overlay is in place, the Ringmaster (Dungeon Master) decides which tokens will be inside the castles and where to locate them on the game board (without the players watching). Up to 2 tokens can be hidden under the the castles. Some castles will have a lesser ring, some have nighmares and lesser ring, some have a dragon and a lesser ring, some are empty. Each castle has a interior environment (The Dungeons, Crystal Caverns, Shifting Halls, or The Infernoes ). The remaining players, the Heroes, will be competing against the Ringmaster (the Villain). The heroes decide how many turns they will need to gather all the rings (50, 75, or 100 are suggested by the manual). The Ringmaster gets 2 "Possessions" chips for every 25 turns, (so 50=4, 100=8). The hourglass is placed on the turn ruler on the edge of the game board according to the number of turns chosen. The game starts when the Heroes place their quest token at a sea port, the hourglass is moved one turn closer to 0. Each time the heroes move their quest token, a turn is subtracted. If they move onto a castle, the ringmaster lifts the castle to show the environment, a lesser ring (if present), a dragon (if present), and/or nightmares (if present). The ringmaster then manually enters this information into the game using the Odyssey²'s keyboard. The overlay conveniently provides START, RESET, NO RING, The Dragon, The Nightmares, The Dungeons, Crystal Caverns, The Infernoes, Shifting Halls, and RINGMASTER CONTROL buttons. It also groups them to indicate which sets only allow one selection to be made. The game finally moves on-screen at this point. The first time this sequence is activated, each players of the Heroes must choose to be a Warrior, Wizard, Phantom, or Changeling. This step is skipped for subsequent battles. They then take control of the Heroes as they navigate the interior of the castle towards the exit and hopefully get the ring if one is present. The lesser Orcs and Firewraths are always present in every castle while a Dragon or The Nightmares only appear in some. The Warrior's Sword can repel Spydroth Tyrantulus, stun Doomwinged Bloodthirsts, repel a Dragon, and confuse the dragon in certain circumstances (held in the up position toward the Dragon when bellow the dragons eye level.) The Wizard's Spell will momentarily repell Spydroth Tyrantulus, stun Doomwinged Bloodthirsts, stun the Dragon, and halt a ball of fire. The Phantom is unarmed but may pass freely into and out of walls thereby frustrating the enemies. The Changeling also is unarmed but may become invisible at will. A team of differing abilities is best for ring questing. If the Heroes die or fail to get a ring, a turn is lost and that ring is given to the Ringmaster to place in another castle (without the Heroes seeing). The Heroes must still exit the castle no matter how many turns it takes. If they flee a Dragon, the Dragon can take the ring to another adjacent castle (at the direction of the Ringmaster) in full view of all the players, and even chase the players. If the Dragon stops chasing the players, it remains in that place. If the players flee to the sea, the Dragon must stop pursuit. At anytime, the Ringmaster can use a possession chip and take control of one of the Heroes. During a possession, should the Ringmaster fail to stop the other player from obtaining a Ring, the Heroes will gain a turn and the Ringmaster will lose his possession chip. Should he manage to kill a player (as opposed to causing his death), the Heroes will lose 5 turns and he will keep his possession chip. The story explains that Ringmaster cannot touch a lesser ring directly or he will be stricken. If the Ringmaster accidentally touches a ring, he will lose his possession token and the Heroes will gain 5 turns, and get the ring (left by the stricken Ringmaster). For each ring the Heroes have, they can make that many additional moves per turn. Any turn modifying penalty or bonus resets the count and the additional moves are not carried over. The Heroes win if they get all 10 rings before running out of turns, the Ringmaster wins if they don't.

The story is inspired by Wagner's Ring (Germanic/Norse), Luned's Ring & Ring of Ogier (Arthurian Legend), Otnit's ring (German Mythology), Solomon's Ring (Abrahamic Legend), and of course Tolkien's rings of power. The manual is unusually written in present-tense-implied-second-person-by-proxy (I think) and includes retelling of past events without changing narrative. It is implied in the manual that there is a master ring in the possession of the Ringmaster and that the 10 lesser rings can neutralize it. Also unusual for a videogame, one of the players is the villain, not just an opponent. The player in the villainous roll can be as nasty or as campy as they choose.

Tags:
The traditional style game board makes it an augmented reality game, the Ringmaster player is the antagonist. The protagonist Phantom character is never fully explained but all indications are it is of the undead kind (ring wraith). Their are huge fire breathing dragons that will pursue the multiple protagonists all the way to the sea in an attempt to cook and/or eat them.

As far as I know this was the first game to offer characters with non-identical abilities for more than one simultaneous player. Additionally, completing the game as a single player with one character is incredibly difficult; the various characters have complimentary abilities. It is designed for two players and to discourage both players choosing the same character. This precedes Dandy and its clone, Gantlet for these innovations.

Dragonstomper  Starpath;Arcadia (Starpath)1982The story goes; a magician created an amulet that he could use to subdue the great dragon. On his way deep into the lair where the dragon slept, the amulet was lost and the magician was forced to leave without accomplishing his task. But the dragon found the amulet and used it to increase his intelligence and power. He recruited monsters and allied with evil men, terrorizing the surrounding kingdom. The king selected a dragon hunter to build up to become, "The DragonStomper".

An actual RPG on the lowly 2600. Made possible by the Super Charger adapter that loads multiple portions of the game that is stored as digital audio data on a cassette. It even has two music clips. Uses the joystick for a menu based interface. The game has multiple 'locations', including an expansive The Wilderness, churches, villages, castles, wilderness huts, bridges, trading shops, magic shops, The Scorpion Pit and The Dragon's Cave. The game has 3 distinct modes corresponding to its three loads.

Battling monsters to build up strength and become The DragonStomper.
Recruiting warriors to protect oppressed villages whilst buying, selling, and trading supplies.
Descending into The Dragons Cave, attacking it with a unit of warriors, and slaying it.
This 3 step process is the recommended path, yet there are several alternatives that will work equally well (none of them are really shortcuts). For instance, if the player manages to find destroy the legendary amulet, the dragon will lose his power; after this, there is the choice of two more options. The Wilderness area is HUGH, considering most 2600 games were no more than 3 screens in size. There are no experience points or levels, rather stats can be directly improved (or lost) with items collected from defeated enemies. A Charm, Cross, Potion, Ring, or Staff will randomly: add strength and heal you, add dexterity, decrease strength, decrease dexterity, or reveal traps. An Axe and a Shield are the only weapons and armor available for use in The Wilderness. Keys can be used to open locked doors and treasure chests. Vitamins will restore strength. Elixir increases dexterity. Medicine protects against fever and acts as an antidote. Lanterns will reveal traps. A Rope or Chain can be used to descend into pits or into The Dragon's Cave. Rubies and Sapphires are more efficient than gold. Bow and Arrows can be used against the Dragon. The Flash spell will momentarily show all traps. The Vision spell will completely reveal traps. The Blast spell is for attack. The Protect spell makes to invincible to enemy attack for its duration. The Stun spell will stun enemies. The Unlock spell will dispel magic barriers.

Was originally advertised as "Excalibur" but the name was changed before publishing.

"The best title ever made in the history of U.S. videogaming." - Forbes Magazine November 2005

Without doubt, DragonStomper would have been the shaper of things to come as the first RPG on the 2600. With subsequent RPGs for the system having better graphics, music, cut sequences, and more in-game story and dialog. Multi-loading from cassette (or CD, first available the same year as this game) and/or more ROM and RAM in the cartridges, would have allowed for chapter structured gameplay and/or each location to have its own load, complete with talking characters and side quests. An audio CD with voice and game data, couple with second generation supercharger like device(s), would have effectively became the first CD drive for consoles and could have included voice for characters and/or many tracks of music. Alas, the videogame market crashed in 1983-84 and DragonStomper remains the only RPG for the system. A huge setback for game quality but a boon for game hardware because the 2600 officially hung around until 1992 with a relative few innovative games. More innovative games, especially RPGs, may have extended its life even longer and delayed the success of consoles with more capabilities.

Getsufuu Maden  Konami1987"Getsufuu Maden" plays like a mix of [game=#7949]Zelda II The Adventure of Link[/game] and [game=#7647]Castlevania[/game]. And as a bonus to the overworld map and side-scrolling action there are even three huge dungeons which you must explore in third-person perspective. The game is of high quality with lots of (short) levels, shops and interesting boss battles. Some repetitive parts can not be avoided however. There is lots of backtracking through already played levels. Graphics and music are good Konami standard, which means a step better than most other companies at that time. BTW: The box art is a special lenticular print (changing its image depending on which angle you look at it), so my box scan looks rather strange.*** NESlabelimageminimize

Happily Ever After  Sofel1991This side-view action-adventure platformer with overworld (like Zelda II) was in the works to be released along with the Filmation movie of the same title. Intended to be an unofficial sequel to Disney's version of Snow White. Snow White and Prince Charming are getting married. But The Wicked Queen's brother wants revenge and kidnaps Prince Charming before he can say "I do". Snow White joins up the 7 Dwarfelles (cousins of the 7 Dwarfs), Muddy, Sunburn, Blossom, Marina, Critterina, Moonbeam, and Thunderella, to find and rescue Prince Charming.***Like the movie, the original title was Snow White in the Land of Doom. But the titles were changed and the release of the film delayed when Disney sued Filmation for infringing on 'their' characters. The Land of Doom title for the game was never used publicly though it was used for the movie. The movie was possible ready for its originally announced release date in 1990 but, obviously, was delayed. The next release date of 1991-07-25 (movie and NES game) failed to be meet as well. The movie was finally released 1993-05-28. The game could have easily been completed long before this time, but by then the NES market, plus the intended target of female children who play NES games, was not going to be making amounting to a minimal number of sales to justify the release. But by then, another company had started work on an Super Nintendo game based on the movie. The Super Nintendo version of Happily Ever After merely a simple platformer. NESlabelimagesubject

#208 - Assault on Helstar - by Phil Schulz

Description: Throughout recorded history, there have always been Adventurers, and their enemies. For a long time, these brave Adventurers fought the enemy, and they usually won. But recently, there have been rumors of a large enemy city somewhere in the Eamon world. The city is supposed to be the legendary city of Helstar. You don't know if you believe this or not. The last recorded sighting of Helstar was over 1000 years ago near a small African village. But if it has arrived here in Eamon, the chance to destroy it forever is finally here.

Legend has it that Helstar can only be destroyed by 'the two jewels'. After a long month of research, you learn that when these jewels are brought close together and a special phrase is said, there will be some sort of magical explosion and the entire city of Helstar will vaporize forever.

Both of the jewels have been guarded by powerful people for millennia. One of them is in a cave somewhere, inside an indestructible magic field. The other was in a Wizard's chest but about a year ago it was stolen. If you do not get it back, Helstar will be destroyed anyway...except that you'll still be in the city when it happens. And then you'll vaporize too.

Comment: Overall, I liked this adventure pretty well. There are several little specials that are interesting to play with; I especially liked the magic boots. Although it is described in fantasy-adventure terms in the intro, most of the adventure is quite contemporary in its map, rooms, and artifacts. There's even a wrecked car alongside a highway at one point. But it is a fantastical adventure in terms of magic and monsters.

Though the overall adventure is of average difficulty, there are a couple of puzzles that aren't all that easy to work out. Therefore, I give it a (7) for difficulty.

This is Derceto, legendary Louisiana mansion - where, against your better judgement, you're drawn into a world of shadows to explore the darker side of Jeremy Hartwood's imagination.

Despite a paralyzing sense of personal danger, your quest for truth drives you to investigate the old house. But, you didn't know that by entering Derceto, you'd be plunged into the daily nightmare that was Jeremy Hartwood's life. You weren't prepared for the torturous howls that resound from deep within its halls. You didn't foresee the shadowy corridors that seemingly have no end. You couldn't anticipate the brooding, gloom-filled rooms, the pervasive weight of dread, the heavy sense of evil that fills the atmosphere and the ver house itself.

Had you known, you might have refused your task. But alas, you accepted, and now you must make your way through this spine-tingling adventure alone ... and in the dark.

Shadowrun  Data East;Laser Beam (Beam Software)1993According to game developers, this game was built upon the "core" of [game=#8055]Nightshade[/game]. This was done to meet the short deadline they had to complete a game based on the Shadowrun license. Another reason they needed to take this shortcut was because most of their adventure game designers left the company after Nightshade was done. To further complicate things, the game's development was put on hold for years and restarted with 6 months left to finish. Even though there was a new team and a new writer, everything had to fit with the story that had already been approved by FASA (there was no creative control to alter this previously approved story)***Loosely based on the novel Never Deal with a Dragon, by Robert N. Charrette.***The hilarity of the Johnny Mnemonic movie review aside, the story actually seems inspired by William Gibson's short story title Johnny Mnemonic published via Omni magazine in 1981 and again via his Burning Chrome collection of short stories in 1981. The Johnny Mnemonic movie actually came 3 years after this game.

[Zerothis]***This game is one of those timeless (although strangely unknown) games, which I so enjoy playing. Set in the 'distant' future, it follows the same path as the movie, no doubt based on this, staring the infamous Keanu Reaves, Johny Mneumonic. Summed up: You got a harddrive in your head, it's costing you a hell of a headache, and damn, you're going to get it out.
Very creative RPG-type level system, multiple weapons, but system of conversations get tiresome. Definitely a game worth playing, but you better be ready to try EVERYTHING to beat it.***Loved this game right from the start when i bought is for my snes 10 years ago for christmas. It was first created by a cruel emperor who wanted to destroy his enemies and also, conquer new countries. He ruled China and the places he had conquered tyrannically.
A group of Tibetan warrior monks managed to remove the dagger from the heart of the Xian emperor and hid it in a secret chamber in the Great Wall of China and gave their descenders the task to guard the dagger and fight against people who wanted Xian's powers for their own good. In this adventure, Lara searches for it against the megalomaniac Marco Bartoli, the Italian leader of Fiamma Nera. He wants to use the power of the dagger to rule the world and your job is to get to it first. To do that though, you must unlock the Sanctuary of the dagger.
The problem is that the key is located somewhere in the snowy mountains of Tibet...
