Appoooh Sega1984The most strangely-named wrestling game ever. Features parodies of Antonio Inoki, Tiger Mask, Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Giant Baba, Stan Hansen, Abdullah the Butcher, and Umanosuke Ueda.

Tag Team Wrestling  Data East (Technos)1984One of the first wrestling games. Includes a large selection of attacks (for 1984). The controls leave something to be desired (grab your opponent, use one button to scroll through your list of attacks, and press the other to perform it) and the computer tends to cheat. Still, it's highly addicting. The voice of the referee was later reused in Exciting Hour/Mat Mania.
[Jacquismo]***I remember this game when I was stationed in Norfolk... True that it might be simplistic and outdated by today's standards -- but it had numerous moves that were easily performed and very gratifying to watch... it even had your protagonist interruptions by others running up through the crowds

I dare anyone to play this game and not find it addicting
{that is, if you can find the original arcade version}

Champion Pro Wrestling  Sega1985A simplistic wrestling game similar to the earlier Tag Team Wrestling, albeit not quite as much fun. Play as the hero team, consisting of parodies of Antonio Inoki and Hulk Hogan, against the masked heel team. Although characters are much larger than in Tag Team and can jump, duck, and attack without grappling first, they are limited to only moving forward and backwards, which is extremely restrictive. Control is a bit sluggish, as well.

Champion Pro Wrestling  Sega1985A simplistic wrestling game ported from the arcade version. However, this version is a singles match with only one opponent, instead of a tag team bout like the original.

Exciting Hour  Taito;Technos1985This game is superb and unlike a lot of other wrestling games released, it has a great control method which in a way is better than Wrestlefest's.

You are a guy who is challenging a few blokes to get to the ultimate accolade in wrestling - the World Championship Belt. The guys you come up against are your typical O.T.T. (over-the-top) WWF-style characters, who dress up in silly costumes. You are trained in many wrestling maneuvers such as the piledriver and suplex, through to basic moves like a flying kick. You can even get up on the top rope and pummel your oppenent with the "Flying Butt Crush" attack. Between each bout your are presented by a short low-down of your oppenent, by some announcer who thinks he is recruiting folks for the army.

What makes this stand out amongst all the other "official" wrestling games is the ease of pulling off these moves. For example, a piledriver is UP + KICK, whereas a suplex is UP + PUNCH. This might not sound like a major feature to the game, but how often in Wrestlefest have you shouted at your character, "Don't do a bloody throw, DDT the bitch!"? I bet it's a lot.

Despite having on tag team more, a cooperative play mode is not available.
[Zerothis]***I give this anime-licensed title my respect for being one of the earliest tag team wrestling games. You choose two from eight available players, which are all rather weird looking, although the graphical representation of the characters leaves much to be desired. Also the rest of the graphics are rather plain looking, which in itself is not the most important thing, because it is an early NES/Famicom game after all. More important is the playability, which is a quite bad. The move-repertoire is limited to only a few basic moves. Sometimes a power pill is thrown into the ring and the character who catches it first is enabled to use a super attack move for a few seconds. I found this element too decisive to win a fight.***Widely-ridiculed wrestling game based on the popular Kinnikuman series (known as M.U.S.C.L.E. in the U.S.).

Tag Team Pro Wrestling  Namco;Data East (SAS Sakata)1986You are challenged to match the awesome skills of your opponents...to gain the Title in the World Super Championships of TAG TEAM WRESTLING

Teamwork and stamina are the keys, as you and your partner battle your way through the Title Matches on your quest for the Belt. Attack your opponents with Body Slams, Drop Kicks, Backbreakers, Flying Head Butts, or even throwing them out of the ring! To win, its a pin for a count of three. Nothing can match the super excitement as the crowd cheers over this mania on the mat. Prepare yourself for Tag Team Wrestling!

DATA EAST BRINGS YOU ARCADE REALISM AT HOME!***One of the many early "not so good" wrestling games. The controls are strange. When you grapple with your opponent and you get the initiative you have to select one from a few different moves by scrolling through a list of moves with the second button. I found it to be too much based on luck whether you or your opponent gets the opportunity for an attack. The next huge issue is the fact that you fight against the same team again and again until you lose. There is no variety at all.***A loose translation of the original arcade game. The gameplay seems to have improved (grappling is now much more controllable), but the set of selectable attacks has been altered and the graphics are understandably more primitive.

Strangely enough, the hero team in this version looks suspiciously like New Japan Pro-Wrestling's Riki Choshu and Super Strong Machine.

[52]***There are some differences between the Japanese and US/EU version of this early Master System/Mark III wrestling game. The biggest one is about the wrestlers themselves. The Japanese version features female wrestlers, while the Western versions features male wrestlers.***Pro Wrestling is somewhere between the (unrelated) NES Pro Wrestling and Sega's Body Slam. Choose one of four tag teams, which include parodies of the Road Warriors, Mil Mascaras, and Dos Caras. Punch and kick the opponent to knock him down, then toss him into the ropes and hit him with a specialty attack on the rebound. The computer announces the moves being performed with a bit of text on-screen.

MicroLeague Wrestling  Microprose;Micro League1987
[22]***
[52]***Welcome to a new arena for the World Wrestling Federation - on your home computer with Micro League's WWF Match Disk. It's your strategy, not eye-hand coordination, that guide the moves of your wrestler. You can play against another competitor or go up against the computer who manages the opposing wrestler. In either case you call the moves and if they're executed, you'll boost your power and inflict grievous damage on your opponent. Once a wrestler's damage reaches a certain level, which depends on the type of match, one can go for the pin!

There are different odds for being able to execute a move, odds which vary depending on what your move is, the strategy move by the other wrestler, and by the relative dominance of each wrestler at any particular point in the match. The odds aren't stacked by the computer to favor any wrestler because your strategy and maneuvers determine who wins the match.

Whether Hulk Hogan, Randy "Macho Man" Savage, or Paul "Mr. Wonderful" Orndorff win the Heavyweight Championship - it's all up to you. But, keep in mind that one match won't decide it forever. Just like in the WWF, in Micro League Wrestling the tides of wrestling warfare do change and no two bouts will proceed the same way. Add the ringside commentary of Vince McMahon, Bruno Sammartino, and Jesse "The Body" Ventura, and anything can happen!
