CrossFire author2001A fantasy medieval themed MORPG with a set of races and classes similar to angband and nethack. There are multiple graphical clients to chose from that will show more information than text based clients (stacks of objects on the floor for instance). Use of text remains heavy in all clients and more closely follows a the example of text adventure interpreters than simple commands. Players will need to converse with NPCs. But many typed commands are simple as well and players can bind any command to a keystroke. Also, there are a variety of shortcuts that can be preformed with the mouse. The adventures provided really depend on which server the player chooses to play on. Most servers allow multiple characters and they remain attached to the server where they were created. Initially there was no gender option provided but version 1.10 added this option. Many servers continue to use the monogender mode. Generally servers include a tutorial map, several interlinked preset maps, and attached maps that are randomly generated within a set or constrictions (themed dungeons). Players find a public bed (or buy their own real estate to place a bed in) to sleep until they want to return to the game, which is a quit-save. Any items they left lying around may be stolen, but their inventory and their character are safe when sleeping. A variety of locked storage, security systems, guard animals, or guard NPCs are available for things that just won't fit into inventory. Maid NPCs are also an option. Player vs player is decided per server. The game allows for servers to have PvP zones and for players to mutually agree to PvP (outside of zones). But absolute prevention of PvP is apparently technically impossible for anyone determined to circumvent the safeguards as sings repeatedly warn players that PvP is forbidden in places where technical limitation are already in place. There is an extensive skills system as well. Skills increase by using them. For instance, read a book that is within your literacy skill level and you will ear literacy experience points. This only works once per book, btw. There is no combat mode. Attacks are in real time. While characters can have all manor of attacks at their disposal, all melee attacks are done without visual feedback. Text feedback is given instead. Ranged attacks show the projectile, but are otherwise identical to each other as melee attacks are.

Find towers and dungeons. Hack up monsters. Gather loot. Sell loot. Practice skills. Repeat.

For POSIX/X11 and/or GTK systems. Confirmed to run on Ubuntu and IRIX. RPM available.

A Tale in the Desert  eGenesis;Pluribus Games2003A monthly fee, free software, social MMORPG set in Ancient Egypt without combat. The focus of the game is activities such as fishing, growing crops, training animals, mining, and such whereby players advanced most efficiently when they cooperate. There are also personal and group challenges to perform. The game has a unique in game government where players themselves are elected and a legal system operated much by the players also. The legal system can ban players, redistrubute abandon property, or even allow or disallow rule altering actions such as individual requests to have a sex-change. The highest office is Demi-Pharaoh, a position that allows the player power to reassign property absolutely, change and influence rules of the game, and even effectively remove players from the game making a tyrannical regime with real-world powers a real possibility (so elections are taken seriously). The systems of the game require a tremendous amount of cooperation. Attempts at adding currency to the game have not been effective, the setting (like the real world example) just doesn't lend well to anything except bartering. New players enter the world at 'newbie island' where experienced players can gain advancement by visiting and helping new players to learn the basics of the game while they also advance. Tests, challenges and player development are divided into categories: Architecture, Art, Body (Health), Harmony (replaced and is a variant the Conflict category), Leadership, Thought, and Worship. There are 127 other 'lesser' categories that have not all been found. Details of the game are sometimes added by developers without announcement. It is up to a player to discover it the new features and tell others so that they can explore it together.

Unique challenges have been presented to the players due to this games unusual format.
Knightmare, Mafia, and another player attempt to force everyone to use the legal system more responsibly. As part of their effort, Mafia damaged a vital resource in the game (effectively detrimentally altering the entire game experience for all players). Players used the legal system to ban Mafia from the game.
A player named Khepry overly-depleted resources and indirectly cause massive environmental catastrophe in the game.
Some skills, called 'stranger skills' allow a player to take advantage of everyone else when they learn them. Effectively, it is possible to learn and then use anti-social skills in the game.
A Character named Malaki traded worthless materials and advocated slavery for women (in addition to treating them as worthless to begin with).
In one phase of the game, treasure chests contaminated with Lung Spore Disease began washing ashore. Players were offered the challenge of finding a cure. Getting the disease inhibited the victim making it more difficult to participate in finding a cure or efforts to stop the disease from spreading. The sick had to be treated. It was left entirely to players to solve the various secondary problems with only the cure itself being programmed into the game.

2014-04-29 ATitD operations were shifted to Pluribus Games

[Sanguine]***Originally Aquaria was not going to have Linux port, but Alec apparently flipped over and ported it in one night (only the sound engine really needed porting). The most difficult part of the porting is case sensitivity in the filesystem rather than any coding part, Mac and Windows ignore case when accessing files while Linux doesn't, making files that open quite well on Win/Mac result in file not found in Linux. They're working to convert all the files and their names in scripts/code to match, so the issues will probably go away after a bit.

[s]The Linux release may be a bit iffy still.[/s]

(The thread shown in the source link has most of the stuff related to Linux port. Just scan for posts by Alec.)

Update: Released as part of the 2010 Humble Indie Bundle after which Aquaria was also open-sourced.

Super Win The Game Minor Key Games;IndieBox (Minor Key Games)2014Zelda II, Metroid, and Super Mario without swords or any weapons, epic music, extra lives, boss battles, life meter, destroyable enemies, cutting edge 8-bit graphics, or magic. What does it add for the things it lacks?

Optionally, it can be experienced in CRT mode. CRT mode is everything bad about playing on old style TVs. Fuzzy moire hexagonal screen pixels, color bleeding, curved screen distortion, invisible overscan and rounded off image corners, motion blur/phosphor burn, reflections on the CRT frame. Even rolling screen, RF interference, and static make an appearance. But it's nostalgic... I think this might well be the only Linux game that has "action safe" and "title safe" design (google it). CRT mode is also tunable to better match the old TV players used when they had no other choice. Personally, I found CRT mode to be worth 15 seconds of enjoyment, then I switched it off. But, that's just my personal preference. Turning off CRT mode does not result in 'modern' graphics. Without the CRT mode, this game is about gameplay only.

It also ads some sort of quasi-bonus, playable dream segments. Same gameplay but confusing transdimensional level design and dialog I cannot make any sense of. The author admits that the dream segments are about something deeply personal. With that, I expect few would understand. This is OK, the dream segments don't require the player do do anything except progress through them and the author hasn't decided to leave the gaming industry or threaten to (like some others have after their deeply personal game designing when uninterpreted).

All sorts of game mechanics make up the game. Double-jumping, wall clinging, wall jumping, invisible structures, switch-on platforms, etc... Each one needs to be earned. Each new ability opens more areas to explore and more places to discover when revisiting. And to make 100% completion, full expert use of each mechanic will be required.

There are no map spoilers. The in-game mapping falls somewhere between Metroid and Super Metroid. There is no in-game map item to reveal areas you've missed. Get out your oldskol grid paper and start making checklists if you want to do a 100% completion of the game. Once again, this seems a deliberate feature to invoke nostalgia.

Speedruns are also added to the mix. Complete with online leader boards.

Finally, death is instant, likley frequet, but not costly. Everything kills the player without HP, shield, or mercy. The player cannot eliminate enemies at all, only earn better methods to avoid them. In contrast, pretty much every door is a retry point.

In short, I you like(d) NES games, SWTG is for you. If you've never played NES games and are curious, SWTG is for you.

Endless Sky author2015The game simply refers to the player's character as a captain of a spaceship and nothing in the game refers to the gender of the player's captain. Other captains/npcs in the game are identified as male or female, lending further credibility that the the player's Captain does have a gender, and that the player is free to decide what it is. labelminimizeminimize

Walkerman Scalemail2015Fight monsters you have no chance of defeating in traditional combat. Rather, players must discover the weaknesses or 'rules' of each monster. Much like the supposed vampire weaknesses of OCD or arithmomania, sunlight, crosses, garlic, inability to cross running water, etc. But the monsters in this game have rules that are not nearly as simple, numerous, obvious, or well known. Player must be very observant to discover each monster's 'rules' then manipulate the monsters into being trapped by them. Only then will it be possible to defeat the monsters. labelminimizesubject

Guide Samus through Alpha, Gamma, Zeta and Omega to defeat all the Metroids. No linear gameplay here, back track and skip ahead as desired and/or needed. Battle new mini-bosses and participate in some entirely new gameplay with new power-ups to match (effectively two major minigames) and new areas to explore, a map to help and mission logs to follow the narrative.
