Dragon's Lair Sullivan Bluth Interactive Media1989Long ago, in a magical time, a good King named Aethelred ruled a peaceful kingdom. Now his kingdom had many treasures, but its greatest prize was Princess Daphne, the King's only child. Brave Knights and handsome Princes came from afar just to pay her court, for she was a maiden of exceeding beauty and grace. But, though they laid vast riches at her feet and pleaded most earnestly for her hand, Princess Daphne refused them all. For her heart had long been given to another... Dirk the Daring, the King's champion and bravest Knight.

Then one dark day, Singe, an evil dragon who ruled over a shadowed land, appeared in Aethelred's kingdom and demanded that the king deliver up his kingdom and people to him. When Aethelred refused Singe's vile demand, the monster kidnapped the beautiful Daphne and imprisoned her in a crystal sphere in the horrible dungeons beneath his enchanted castle. Singe then sent Aethelred this message:

Relinquish your kingdom before the setting sun or your beloved daughter will perish. Aethelred and all the people of the kingdom were plunged into despair. All except for Dirk who vowed to go to the
enchanted castle and free the Princess ... if he could survive the dungeon's many perils ... if he could reach the Dragon's lair.***

EcoQuest: The Search for Cetus  Sierra On-Line1991According to Sierra, the DOS version required for the original (disk version) is literally "DOS". Since DOS 3.0 was the first to use 286 features, I'm using that in this game entry (DOS 6.22 will run on an 8080). The disk versions of the game can officially be patched to be identical to the CD version which required DOS 5.0.***

Jones in the Fast Lane Sierra On-Line1991Jones in the Fast Lane is a simulation of a person's life, presented as a turn-based strategy game. You can play by yourself, or compete with other human players or the computer-controlled Jones. At the beginning of the game you determine what your goals are, in four categories - Money, Happiness, Education and Career: the higher your goals, the longer the game.

The game itself is presented as something akin to a board game. The board represents the city where you live. Each turn (here, a turn represents a week of your life) you have limited time to act, and you have to choose how to spend it. Walking somewhere else costs you time, as well as working, learning, and looking for a job.

The first thing you should do is looking for a job at an employment center. Since initially you have no education, experience or work history, you can only choose the simplest, lowest-paying jobs - such as a janitor or a cook. Later on, as you enroll into various courses at an university, you'll get smart enough to get the high-ranking jobs. But remember that some jobs require you to buy and wear expensive clothes.

Work isn't mandatory, and you can dedicate time to working whenever you feel like it. The money you get can be spent in many ways. You can buy a snack at a fast food restaurant (you should eat something each week, or next week you'll have less time due to hunger). You can buy some appliances for your house, lottery tickets, newspapers and more. You can also store your money in the bank (a wise choice, considering the ubiquity of pickpockets) or invest into stock market. Remember that you have to pay rent for your house - if you don't pay for a long time, your landlord will garnish some amount from the money you earn at work. But if you get enough cash, you can rent a luxury apartment and move out of the stinky hole inside which you've been spending your life earlier!***

Leisure Suit Larry 1: In the Land of the Lounge Lizards  Sierra On-Line1991LOOKING FOR A GOOD TIME?

MEET LARRY.
He's just turned 40 and he's still single. If you can get past the glow of his Grecian formula you can see his hairline beginning to make a hasty retreat from his forehead. Larry's leisure suit is of the highest quality (!00% man-made material, permanent press, too!). He wears at least 11 gold chains, and his freshly-capped teeth could blind you in a bright light.
Down at the singles bar he tells the chicks, "sure I'm single...I got in a fight with my ol' lady and she threw me out." He doesn't tell them the 'ol' lady' was his mom, or that he was 38 at the time.

YEAH, LARRY'S A JERK
He's the ultimate blind date nightmare. The kind of guy you wouldn't want your daughter to meet, let alone date. But he's also become an unlikely cult-hero of the computer age. And he's the star of this new version of the 3-D Adventure Game classic.

3-D EQUALS DANCING, DRINKING, AND DAMES!
Become the lovable nerd Larry for one fabulous night. You'll drink. You'll gamble. And, if you play your cards right, you might even meet the girl (or girls) of your dreams.
Leisure Suit Larry is a humorous, harmless endeavor for adults. The object of the game is to help Larry over-come his jerkisms and lose his "you know what". It's a silly, risque romp through the singles' scene and a challenging adventure game that will test your street smarts and suave sophistication.
So slip into your leisure suit and venture out into the land of the lounge lizards. We guarantee it will be a night you'll never forget.

A New 3-D Animated Adventure Game featuring:* Hand-painted and digitized art in brilliant full color (including many of your favorite fleshtones). * An improved music card compatible stereo soundtrack that'll have you partying all night long. * More mouse-controlled "point-and-grope" commands give you quick, one-hand action scoring. * Incredible three-dimensional animation. Larry in front of speeding cabs, into hot tubs, across the disco dance floor. * Animated characters that come alive. They walk, they talk... they even ignore your best pick-up lines - just like in real life.***

Roberta Williams' Mixed-Up Mother Goose Sierra On-Line1991A GAME YOUR CHILDREN WILL LOVE.
Bestselling authoress Roberta Williams is a master storyteller, famous for her fantasy adventure games. Now, Sierra combines her magic touch with the classic rhymes of Mother Goose to create her first adventure game for kids.
Mixed Up Mother Goose has been made so simple that even young children can play it when adults are out of the room. Once you get the program started, your child can take over because only a few keys are necessary.

CHOOSE THE CHARACTER THAT LOOKS LIKE YOUR CHILD!
Help your child pick from a variety of characters (male or female) to represent him or her in the game. Help them type their name to further personalize their character. Mother Goose can now use your child's name while talking to him or her throughout the adventure.

YOUR CHILD BECOMES A HERO BY HELPING MOTHER GOOSE!
Roberta Williams takes your child on an adventure in dreamland where he or she will help Mother Goose by finding missing pieces to some of her most popular rhymes. Find the missing sheep and take them back to Little Bo Peep. Help Little Miss Muffet find her Tuffet. Find the pail and return it to Jack and Jill. Your child will even go on a quest at the service of Old King Cole.
Once the rhyme has been corrected, it comes to life in brilliant color and splendid animation, and the rhyme is performed for your child by the onscreen characters. Each is accompanied by a charming musical score so your child can sing along.

FEATURES:
* Up to twelve children can save their game according to their name. Great for brothers and sisters or classroom groups.
* Easy-to-use menus make it simple to play, save the game, or select options such as joystick control.
* Includes a free color map of Mother Goose Land.
* Randomly located objects and characters allow your child to enjoy playing Mixed Up Mother Goose over and over again.

Darklands Microprose (MPS Labs)1992Darklands has a unique mix of features. Good and evil are not enforced on the player. 'Evil quests' and 'good quests' are offered. Reviews noted an "element of free-will" which is a very rare thought when it comes to videogames (I actually cannot think of any other examples of a reviewer saying "free-will" about a game). The reputation system is regional. Thus players can be hated in one region and revered in another. The world is based on 15th century Europe and only contains supernatural elements that people believed at the time (The game is naturalistic by 15th century Europe standards). This is a world of humans, not fairy tale creatures. The manual devotes quite a bit of text to disclaim the presented world as one that was believed to be, not one that was factual, and point out it is a world unaware of contemporary or future reality. The manual claims only 15th century texts were sourced for the game. Characters are free to acquire and nurture skills as they see fit. This means, for example, a physically strong warrior may also devote training to picking locks. A cleric could even learn to pick pockets. Characters age, which comes with appropriate advantages and disadvantages. Or, players may opt to start with an older character who has already acquired and trained in selected skills. Older starter characters have also likely acquired more advanced equipment. Locations in the game are actual historical locations within the Holy Roman Empire. For the player's sake, locations are marked with the historically accurate name and their modern names. The interface present two main modes of interacting with the world. Reading and selecting dialogues for interactive fiction style play and strategic round-based battles (simultaneous turns) in hand-painted orthographic environments. In battle, different weapons and armor have appropriate strengths and weaknesses when interacting with each other. Plate armor, for example, is strong against bladed weapons but weaker against blunt and spiked weapons. This is an open world game with a main quest. There are no set paths to 'win' and the final boss' location is randomized for each play through. It is up to the player to ready themselves and discover the location of the final boss by any of the means provided by the game. 15th century religion plays a tremendous role in the game and main quest.

The game reportedly took 3 years and cost 3 million dollars. An tremendous amount of resources for a non-multimedia disk based 1992 DOS RPG from Microprose. An Amiga version was considered but deemed to much game to run from floppies and to few Amiga customers with hard drives. The Atari ST game known as "Darklands" is unrelated to this one.***
