Doom95 Microsoft (id Software)1996This is the Windows 95 version of DOOM. It comes as shareware mainly. Although it was sold in some retail packages. If you own any full version of DOOM, you can run it with the Doom95 executable. It also works with all doom wad files.

Gabe Newell was shocked that Doom was the number one software in use and Windows was the second most used. He was frustrated by the "common wisdom" that good games could not be made for Windows. Wanting to show that Windows games could be better than NES, he contacted John Carmack about porting Doom to Windows and said "Hey, we'll do this for free". In 2013 Newell adopted a similar attitude toward Windows 8 vs Linux.

[Blizzard]***If you're even thinking about buying Diablo 2, then say goodbye to family, friends, and your job. Run away to Mexico if you have to, because Diablo 2 is too good. It's one of those games that keep you awake at night. It makes you think about gold and magic items while your working. You'll miss entire meals for this game. It's so good it's scary.
That's right, folks, evil is back, and badder than ever. Your job, again, is to stop evil from destroying the world. You do it by hacking millions of demons and goblins to pieces, gaining experience, and finding magical items. Basically, this is the formula for the entire game, and it's more fun than should be allowed by law.

Personally I think the game is quite good, and the major criticism from others seems to have been about the extremely dark setting (lack of lighting), but how many horror games do you see in brightly lit environs that still manage to scare you? I doubt any. Creep you out by weirdness, perhaps, but not scare you.

The only gripe I have about the game is that it relies all too much on scripted sequences to scare you, and the mob A.I. seems to be a bit too straightforward to give much challenge as it's quite easy to figure out and once that's done, most situations are ridiculously easy to handle, especially with the virtually infinite ammo you have (not that that's much a surprise as the place _is_ weapons research and manufacturing facility on top of everything else).***Minimum:

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion  2K Games;Bethesda Softworks (Bethesda Game Studios)2006Oblivion is set during the Third Era, six years after the events of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, although it is not a direct sequel to it or any other game. The game is set in Cyrodiil—a province of Tamriel, the continent on which all the games in the series have so far taken place.

The story begins with the player imprisoned in a cell for an unknown crime. Emperor Uriel Septim VII, accompanied by Imperial bodyguards known as the Blades, arrives in the prison, fleeing from assassins who have murdered the emperor's three sons and are now targeting him. The emperor and the Blades reveal that the player's jail cell contains a secret entrance to a part of the city's sewer that functions as an escape route. Pardoned by the emperor, the player follows the group into the sewer, where they come under attack by assassins. The blade captain is cut down during the fighting that ensues. Knowing he is destined to die by the hands of the assassins, Uriel Septim entrusts the player with the Amulet of Kings, worn by the Septim emperors of Tamriel, and orders the player to take it to a man named Jauffre, the grandmaster of the Blades, at Weynon Priory. Immediately afterward, one of the assassins kills the emperor. The player escapes the sewer and heads out into the open world of Cyrodiil.***

1) In
Oblivion.ini
set
iMinGrassSize=130
(default: 80), this makes grass more sparse (the grass is mostly CPU intensive).
2) Disable HDR and use only Bloom effect (HDR in Oblivion is very hackish anyway). In most other games HDR doesn't cause much performance issues nor looks as garish as it does in Oblivion.
3) In
Oblivion.ini
set
bDSoundHWAcceleration=0
(default: 1, eanbled) if sounds are strange.

Anything else is just choosing right quality vs speed trade-off with video settings.

Crashes:
4) In case of random crashes, try running the game on single core.

Other:
5) There are plenty of user made mods that make the game look prettier, but this is usually accomplished with higher polycount models and larger textures, so if you have trouble running the game as is, don't even dream of it. Oblivion is much like Morrowind, except they ruined the beast races' looks even more (though I kinda like it they chose not to use digitigrade legs for them instead of vainly trying to get them to work like they tried in Morrowind - it was a horrible sight if you don't know).

Anyways, Oblivion did have many improvements over Morrowind, the graphic mood isn't as happy as in Morrowind, but still needs work to reach what it was In Daggerfall to really suit my taste (Battlespire and Redguard had the mood right, too). The graphic side really had gained some improvement (mostly just tech eyecandy), except the land still looks like it's made of bent plastic like in Morrowind.

Unsurprisingly the AI seems to have received extremely little attention, with the opponents blindly rushing in at you or blasting from afar with little regard to tactics or anything else than to attack and.. well.. attack. The last time I saw AI this weak was in Serious Sam, but that game didn't really need it. Still, You'd have expected Oblivion to have something more advanced but no, it seems they ignored it completely.

It's also sad that they still rely on level-scaling the opponents to keep the "challenge" up, but that makes the world seem ridiculous since everything becomes tougher with you. So, in the end, you don't kick the ass out of those pesky rats any more easily then than you did when you just started out of the prison, which leaves room to question, what is the leveling there really for? It seems as if you leveling up means the world is becoming more and more dangerous simply because _you_ are becoming better (by around level 20 pretty much every bandit and God knows what is wearing full Daedric armour and weapons all enchanted to the brink with who knows what), raising curious questions about what your character really is to cause such grand change in the order of things.

Your actions still go largely unnoticed by others and have little impact on things that you can do, making one wonder what they really did for the series. The story goes on, the series gets better tech, but the gameplay stays the same crappy self from year to year.

If they ever decide to make fifth chapter, well... if it looks like nothing's changed from this for the better, then my hope for the series will be gone for good.***Game links:

Hellgate : London is the first original title from premier developer Flagship Studios. Set in the near future, Hellgate introduces gamers to a world devastated by demon invasion. Players are thrust into a desolate city scorched by hellfire. Here, the few survivors must meld science and sorcery in order to gain a foothold against the minions of darkness and save the bloodline of humanity.

Hellgate : London combines the depth of role-playing games with the action of first-person shooters while offering infinite replayability and an individualized gaming experience complete with dynamically created levels, monsters, items and events. Players create a hero and then battle through innumerable hordes of demons while completing quests and advancing through experience levels and branching skill paths. A robust, flexible skill and spell system, highly-customizable items and a massive variety of randomly generated equipment allow players to create a hero that is truly unique.

FEATURES

* A New Perspective on RPGs
Combining the depth and customizability of role-playing games with the immersion of those played from the first-person, Hellgate is fast-paced but doesn't require lightning reflexes to achieve a high level of success.
* Unique and Appealing World
Explore an ominous post-apocalypse London alone or with friends. From ancient ruins long buried beneath once thriving streets to shattered cathedrals, fact and myth are blurred into an unceasing nightmare as the last remnants of humanity fight for their very souls.
* Character Classes
Fight against the demons of the underworld as one of several unique character classes. like the Templar, each class has a unique visual and game-play style based on its particular history and place in the world. Randomly generated items that can be modified in numerous ways ensure that heroes are distinct and individualized.
* Hell on Earth
Battle against a wide variety of demonic enemies, each with their own unique attributes, abilities, and vulnerabilities.
* Infinite Re-playability
With dynamically generated levels, massive quantities of randomly created items, chance events and story-driven quests, no two gaming experiences are ever the same. Differing levels of rarity and modification potential for items and skills also mean that every game played is a unique event.
* Single-Player and Online Multiplayer Support
While Hellgate : London stands on its own as a singleplayer game, it also provides a compelling multiplayer experience via a dedicated online gaming destination. By creating unique and individualized gameplay "instances" within a vast online community, Hellgate provides gamers with all the best parts of traditional massive multiplayer games, but without any of the common downsides.

Seven Kingdoms: Conquest is a Real Time Strategy game that explores 6,000 years of human history.
Its setting has a healthy twist of fantasy with hordes of demons attempting to invade the earth every 1,000 years
Its gameplay also offers some fresh new ideas to make battles more intense and exciting.

THE CAMPAIGN
The Campaign begins in the Middle East in 3000 B.C.
It progresses in 1,000 year increments to Europe in 1 A.D.
and then expands on a global scale as it reaches the modern eras from 2,000 A.D. onwards.
The story can be played from both sides - as the Demons or as the Humans.
The Human story is a tale of how an ancient secret society, known as the Illuminati, managed to preserve magic and knowledge throughout the ages in a seemingly endless struggle to help stop Demons invading our world every 1,000 years.
The Demon's story is quite different.
Demons are patient creatures.
It tells of how, once they discover Earth, they enact a long and arduous plan to rid the world of magic and miracles, so that they might capture us.

THE STORY
The story began in an age long past - an age before mankind had spread across the face of the world - an age before we had even learned to speak.

In a dimension far-removed from our own there dwelled a diverse race of creatures that we have come to know collectively as Demons. Their world was violent and cruel, full of raging fires and jagged fields of ice, where the very air was poison and would sear the lungs of a lesser being. Such a harsh realm bred feral and dangerous creatures and the Demons were the product of millions of years of evolution in this twisted place, always looking for new conquests, delighting in corruption and reveling in the slaughter of the weak and infirm.

There came a time however, when they were the undisputed rulers of their world. Lest they fall upon themselves, the greatest amongst them, Thoringrad Lord of Fire, conceived a plan. He created a number of magical stone boxes, each one ensorcelled so that only greed could open it, for as all Demons knew: Greed breeds Fear, and Fear is the greatest weapon that you can wield against an opponent, ensuring victory every time. He sent these boxes off into the ether that exists between worlds, and the Demons patiently waited for one of the boxes to be opened, that it might call to them across time and space.

In Egypt in 3,000 B.C., the Akkadians found one of these boxes. Their priests, being wise, took this unholy artifact and entombed it within a temple, but whether it was the magic of the box or just the nature of humankind, word soon spread out through the rising kingdoms of man.

By the time the rumors reached Pharaoh Akhon Luminatos of Egypt , they had grown to hint that this box contained the secrets of eternal life. Becoming obsessed by the thought of such power, Akhon gathered his forces and marched upon his neighbor – - his goal to pull the temples of Akkadia apart stone by stone, to find this box, and to gaze upon its secrets...

* 7 Human Civilizations to play, each one containing 3 different nations

Immediately obvious differences is the presence of item shop (microtransactions), achievements, auction house, newbie XP boost status effect, and various other features reminiscent of MMOs.

The overall story is less apparent and some things in regards to the story that existed in the original are no longer in.
