J. B. Harold: Blue Chicago Blues  Riverhill Soft1995After the successful Murder Club, we dive back into another intriguing detective saga featuring the intrepid private investigator, J.B. Harold. In this new case, a mysterious woman in red has been murdered in Chicago. The female detective who initiated the investigation also tragically loses her life, with the killer staging it as a suicide. Arriving in Chicago, J.B. Harold is tasked with collaborating with the local police to unravel the perplexing mystery.

J.B. Harold: Blue Chicago Blues is designed as an interactive film. Players predominantly spend their time engrossed in watching scenes filmed with actual actors and real locations. At certain junctures, the film pauses, and players are confronted with a screen offering two or more options. Each decision pushes the in-game clock forward, hence careful planning is vital to avoid running out of time and to ultimately crack the case successfully.

Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle Of Flesh  Sierra On-Line1996Curtis Craig is a thirty-year-old man whose distorted childhood is filled with horrors. His father was involved in an illegal, top-secret experiment for a company called WynTech Industries. Nearly nothing is known about the true nature of this experiment; but something in it affected the sanity of Curtis' mother, eventually driving her to suicide. Curtis' father was later shot, leaving the poor little boy with serious behavioural disturbances, and eventually in therapy.

Now, a year after having been released from the mental institution, Curtis is employed at WynTech Industries, whose manager, Paul Warner, has seemingly taken it upon himself to take care of Curtis. He tries to find the cause of his psychotic episodes and the mysterious murders that break out all around him, all the while discovering more and more about his past life and his father's fate.

Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh is not an actual sequel to the original Phantasmagoria, but rather a follow-up that has similar themes and visual concept. The game is more heavy on puzzles and traditional adventure gameplay than its predecessor. The gameplay involves standard activities found in adventure games, including extended conversations with the characters featuring selectable dialogue topics, collecting and manipulating inventory items with the environment, etc. It is possible (and often necessary) to call characters on the phone, as well as check and answer e-mails accessed by Curtis' computer at his workplace.

Like its predecessor, the game has a simple point-and-click interface and employs video sequences with live actors as cutscenes. Short movies are usually shown after each action performed by the protagonist.***

Psychic Detective Electronic Arts1996Eric Fox is a psychic who lives in San Francisco and earns his living performing magic shows in seedy nightclubs. This changes when Eric meets Laina, a mysterious woman who trains him to venture inside other people's minds. Laina then hires Eric as a private detective to travel into the minds of the people who attend a wake held in honor of her father, which has died under unclear circumstances.

Psychic Detective is an interactive movie with adventure elements. The player can choose people whose minds Eric is able to read, and also interact with objects for further insight into the storyline. Many of these decisions and interaction choices branch the storyline, leading it to different endings; one of these endings is reached if the player chooses not to interact at all and lets the movie unfold by itself.***

Spycraft: The Great Game Activision1996As a new CIA operative, you've been called to Washington. Apparently a Russian candidate for president was assassinated (read: shot) while giving a public speech. Can you uncover a conspiracy that reaches the highest level of government (both US and Russia)?

Spycraft is an adventure game with simulation elements that involves quite a bit of puzzle-solving. With input from ex-head of KGB and ex-head of CIA, the scenario is frighteningly authentic. You choose your actions from what is available on screen. You will need to collate large amount of information, and pick out certain patterns that will lead you to what you need. You are helped along by your trusty PDA which highlights the areas to be investigated (i.e. puzzles to be solved) and keeps track of relevant facts.***

Santa Fe Mysteries: The Elk Moon Murder Activision1996The Elk Moon Murder is a full motion video adventure game. You take on the part of rookie detective with the Santa Fe police. Anna Elk Moon, a famous native American artist, has been murdered and you have five days to solve the mystery, before "the big boys muscle in", as your chief inspector tells you.

The game features a point & click interface. You have eight hours a day, while almost every action you take decreases 15 minutes of your time. Puzzle solving is not part of the game really. Instead you have to listen to the usual suspects, order forensics and shoot photos. Your goal is to come up with an arrest warrant at the end of the game.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert  Virgin (Westwood Studios)1996Red Alert is one of the most successful and well known real-time strategy, following on the first Command & Conquer released in 1995. Game mechanisms and strategies has not been changed - you have to build a base, produce combat units and you harvest resources. The story, however, is distinctly different - it is not about two enemy organizations, but you can play either for allies or for Soviets. These two sides battle for the fate of planet Earth itself. The game has a variety of missions: from conventional forestry, through missions on the water and also indoor missions, where you have to use only infantry.***

Zork: Grand Inquisitor Activision1997Magic is banned in the Great Underground Empire, and the Grand Inquisitor Yannick (with the kind help of Frobozz Electric) has a stranglehold on the world of Zork, establishing a totalitarian regime. According to his own words, the goal of the new state is to "shun magic, shun the appearance of magic, shun everything, and then shun shunning." Any opposing forces will be "totemized", which is apparently a rather unpleasant procedure. The player character in the game is just that - the player character: Ageless, Faceless, Gender-Neutral, Culturally-Ambiguous Adventure Person (abbreviated AFGNCAAP), as the politically correct designation by the Dungeon Master Dalboz defines him/her (it?). Naturally, it is the hero's duty to save the world by collecting a Cube of Foundation, the Skull of Yoruk, and the Coconut of Quendor, so that magic can return to the land and the Grand Inquisitor falls victim to his own shunning policies.

Zork: Grand Inquisitor is the third in the row of graphical Zork games. It utilizes the same engine as its predecessor, with first-person perspective, 180 degree camera rotation, pre-rendered backgrounds, and live actors. Compared to the previous game, it is more similar in tone to the early, predominantly humorous Zork adventures, containing plenty of references to them.

The gameplay is puzzle-oriented; most of the puzzles are inventory-based, though there are also a few that require manipulating the game's environment. Casting magical spells is an important element of the gameplay. The protagonist discovers spell scrolls and learns spells from them, which must be frequently used on objects and items to solve puzzles. The spells range from simple magic that can open locked doors to exotic variations such as "making all purple things invisible". The player can also cast spells backwards, in which case they will have an opposite effect; in the aforementioned examples, casting the reversed spells will lock a door or magically make an object visible, provided it was purple before that condition was inflicted upon it.***

Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight  LucasArts1997

While it aimed to be better than the first Dark Forces, with varied weaponry, lightsaber, force powers, and full 3D control, it loses all its virtues because of mediocre levels, predictable foes and boring design. Not to mention the shorts and the acting skills of the actors. And to top it gives failures constantly, both graphics and game. A pity, because the multiplayer makes it clear how entertaining the game can be with worthy opponents.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2  Westwood (Westwood Pacific)2000Red Alert 2 takes place a few years after the events in the original Red Alert. The Allies, victorious in their battles against Joseph Stalin and his Soviet army, have restored peace throughout the Europe and have rebuilt its decimated economy and infrastructure. To oversee the Soviet reconstruction, they have installed their own puppet dictator in the place of Stalin: General Romanov. Outraged at Stalin's failure, Romanov is haunted by memories of his homeland burning and Allied troops marching through his country's streets. He's thirsty for vengeance, and unbeknownst to his Allied puppeteers, Romanov has been mobilizing the World Socialist Alliance into a giant military machine for years and is now only biding his time, waiting for the opportunity to strike. When a civil war breaks out in Mexico, Romanov makes his move. Terrified Allies activate the defensive system and declare nuclear war on Russia. Unfortunately all systems are disabled and the US's entire arsenal of nuclear ICBMs remain dormant, useless, in their silos. On the other side Romanov drops in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and all nearby countries. And worse, people who live there feel weird headaches and some have even turned against the Allies. Intelligence sources confirm the fears: Romanov has developed a frightening technology that affects man and machine alike; specifically, he has created psychically enhanced troops that can attack with a simple thought. labelimagesubject

The UnReal World  Enormous Elk2006Although the DOS version was compatible with Windows already back in 1999, a native Windows version was produced only in 2006.***UnReal World, or UrW, is a unique graphical roguelike RPG taking place in the Far North long, long ago. It brings you a realistic game world rich with historical atmosphere in which northern folklore, knowledge and way of life play an important part. The atmosphere and game features are highly original and compelling. The world of the game is based on the ancient Finland in the late Iron Age.

As a member of one of the nine different cultures you'll enter a very realistic and enchanting game world:

- find excitement in surviving everyday life and the quest for success in the harsh ancient wilderness
- play freely or complete various game tasks in a huge randomly generated world
- skill-based system including dozens of skills from COOKERY to HIDEWORKING
- keep in touch with the indigenous spirit world and the supernatural guardians of nature
- packed with intuitive graphics and pictures, original music and sounds

as a fisherman, a hermit searching for the peace, a brave adventurer, a rough hunter, a trapper or a tradesman etc. Everything is up to you.***prehistoric — specifically late iron age, but this lasted up till around 11th or 13th century in Finland (there was no real written language before Swedes conquered Finland and this is set before that).

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars  Electronic Arts (EA Los Angeles)2007CnC3 is probably the hardest strategy game I know, and not because the AI is that good, but because it cheats so much. Even on the so called easy difficulty the game is frustratingly hard to even barely win (later) missions. Besides that I still like it, especially the revised GDI and the all new Scrin faction. As a game I would not recommend this to anyone but the masochistic players or diehard Tiberium series fans.***Latest version: 1.09 (as of ?)***March, 2047. A massive nuclear fireball explodes high in the night sky, marking the dramatic beginning to the Third Tiberium War and long-awaited return of the most groundbreaking Real-time Strategy franchise (RTS) of all time.

The critically-acclaimed Command & Conquer (C&C) series returns with Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars (C&C 3). Setting the standard for the future of RTS gaming once more, C&C 3 takes you back to where it all began—the Tiberium Universe.

In 2047, Tiberium has blanketed the Earth, which is now divided into zones based on the level of Tiberium infestation. Pristine Blue Zones represent 20% of the planet's surface and are the last refuge of the civilized world. Partially habitable Yellow Zones make up 50% of the planet's surface; most of the world's population lives in these war-torn and ecologically ravaged areas. The remaining 30% of the planet is uninhabitable, a Tiberium wasteland swept by violent Ion Storms. Red Zones are like the surface of an Alien planet.

The infamous Kane has returned to lead the Brotherhood of Nod in a massive global assault on the Global Defense Initiative and the few remaining Blue zones left on the planet. Only you can stop him. The fate of humanity – and the planet – is in your hands.

Featuring state-of-the-art, next-generation graphics, an epic story with live action, full-motion video sequences, and the classic fast-paced C&C style of play, C&C 3 sets the standard for the single player RTS experience.

When you decide to test your skills online, a suite of truly innovative features, such as the ability to transform online battles into a spectator sport, unfold.

Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath  Electronic Arts (EA Los Angeles)2008Far more enjoyable to play than the base CnC3 in my experience, and the difficulty options actually work properly in this. In terms of story, Kane's Wrath is sort of a filler, covering things between second and third tiberium wars, clarifying some events of third tiberium war and shows part of the events leading to CnC4. If anyone is ever interested in CnC3, then this is the only reason to get it, besides following the story of Kane (Tiberium series) if you're into that sort of thing. Thisis also very much focused on mutliplayer experience as the story only allows you to play with Nod and its sub-factions and only cursorily demonstrating the new sub-factions for GDI and Scrin.***In the name of Kane! As the expansion pack to the critically-acclaimed and fan favorite, Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars™, this Real-time Strategy (RTS) game returns to the Tiberium Universe with Kane at the center of an epic new single player campaign spanning 20 years – from the rebirth of the Brotherhood of Nod after the Second Tiberium War through the dramatic events of the Third Tiberium War and beyond. Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight  Electronic Arts (EA Los Angeles)2010Includes two campaigns selectable after ~3 tutorial/prologue missions, both of which end in superficially same manner but have their own quirks which may be of interest, though in terms of sequels (if there ever will be such) there's little need for retconning either campaign as they are sufficiently separated/streamlined not to clash with each other (but can't exist simultaneously).

Personally the singleplayer portion is rather pointless with obvious focus on 2-3 player coops or larger pvp matches.

Most of the difficulty on solo/coop games comes from the fact that the enemy isn't limited to 3-6 MCV calldowns like you are and thus can never be truly defeated (usually it isn't the objective and when it is, they don't call new MCVs when one id destroyed).

For anyone wanting good solo game, better look at the older free CnC games (Tiberian Sun for example) or games unrelated to CnC series. Didn't try multiplayer, so it might be more interesting if that's your thing.***In the year 2062, humanity found itself on the brink of extinction. Tiberium, the mysterious, alien crystalline structure that infested Earth for decades and caused years of relentless conflict between the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and the Brotherhood of Nod, was close to rendering the planet uninhabitable. In the midst of this crisis, Kane, Nod's prophetic leader, emerged from seclusion to deliver GDI the message that he had developed a system that could control Tiberium and harness its power. But he could not build this "Tiberium Control Network" without GDI's cooperation. Thus, the two opposing factions—GDI and Nod—found themselves in a desperate and unlikely alliance to stop Tiberium from extinguishing mankind.

"KANE. GDI. NOD. TIBERIUM. HOW WILL IT END?"
Now, after 15 years, the network is nearly complete. Tiberium is under strict control and our revitalized planet is on the cusp of a new age of prosperity and progress. It is only now that the world's citizens begin to seriously ponder why Kane chose to help, and what he will want in return. These questions and more lead to the dramatic final act of the 15-year Tiberium saga in Command & Conquer 4 Tiberian Twilight.

Kane. GDI. Nod. Tiberium. How will it end? Find out in Command & Conquer 4 Tiberian Twilight, told through gritty live-action cinematics, persistent player progression, and a multitude of innovations to the classic fast and fluid Command & Conquer gameplay.
