X-COM: Terror from the Deep  2K Games (Microprose Software)1999The war continues... X-COM: UFO Defense brought you to a galactic battlefield. X-COM: Terror from the Deep brings the alien terror into a totally new dimension.

Seeking to take advantage of a weakened Earth, X-COM's deep space foes unexpectedly change strategy and launch a powerful second front against planet Earth.

In the dark depths of vast oceans, long sleeping forces are awakened by reanimation signals sent out across the galactic silence by their interstellar brothers and sisters. Slowly but surely, an army of hibernating alien sea creatures awakens. Your combat now extends to the strange new worlds of the deep where superior alien technologies threaten the very survival of this planet - your planet - Earth.***[Spanish]

[Blizzard]***If you're even thinking about buying Diablo 2, then say goodbye to family, friends, and your job. Run away to Mexico if you have to, because Diablo 2 is too good. It's one of those games that keep you awake at night. It makes you think about gold and magic items while your working. You'll miss entire meals for this game. It's so good it's scary.
That's right, folks, evil is back, and badder than ever. Your job, again, is to stop evil from destroying the world. You do it by hacking millions of demons and goblins to pieces, gaining experience, and finding magical items. Basically, this is the formula for the entire game, and it's more fun than should be allowed by law.

Master of Orion III  Infogrames (Quicksilver Software)2003"Space is big. Really big." So begins The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But like the void of space, there is a void in strategic space games. None have provided the bigness, that focus on the highest levels of grand strategy, that science-fiction epics in print, film, and television have long delivered. So, to the traditional 4-X strategy game of eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate, we have added an important new fifth X, eXperience. Through game devices that add character, story, and plot to familiar strategy play mechanics, MOO3 delivers the grandeur and richness of an epic space opera--not in the guise of a traditional book, movie, or TV show, but in the medium of a game experience.***Minimum:

npc anxiety/fear — seen if a dinosaur breaks free from their containment area (this affects the tourists) or if two different dinosaurs (specifically a carnivore and herbivore or large carnivore with smaller carnivore) are forced to be too close to each other. The dinosaurs may try to avoid the carnivore so much that they can't stave their hunger and eventually starve to death unless the carnivore ends up killing them (is that even possible here? didn't witness it, but hypothetically it could happen). To prevent this, you can either provide separate holding areas for the dinos or large enough single area for them to prowl so they can keep their distance naturally. The latter is obviously much harder set up and maintain, but the game does provide sufficient mechanisms to attempt it.***Latest version: retail.

3059 author2004The year is 3059.

Earth has been overpopulated for ages. For the past 200 years, humankind has been seeking out new planets to colonize. Before humans are placed on a new planet, it is prepared with a basic set of roads, satellite networks, and buildings constructed by autonomous robots. You've just been placed on planet Esperenza, the planet of hope, with groups of other settlers. There is no organized authority in effect, and large cities and vehicles have yet to arrive; aliens still live freely in uncivilized areas. You have every chance to be anything you want to be.

Live long and prosper in 3059.

[12]***If the idea of good game is to have inconsistent controls for the same action in different situations (right click works to remove all other items from build queue except the last, which you can only remove by the minus key in keyboard, not the numpad minus mind you... delete would've made more sense and it's actually more commonly used in other games) and forcing the player to choose an action from "help" dialog instead of ignoring it (I suggest you disable the advisor pop-ups which are on by default, since you must take the advice), then Civ4 is truly master of it. I can't imagine what drove them to so brilliantly disregard simple user friendliness. Mostly it works well, though, at least if you can ignore the problems it has. For me, these are aggravating shortcomings in the simplest things a game of this kind can have are too much. Unfortunately they're present in the final patch and Warlords/BtS expansions as well, so maybe I'm alone in this grievance for surely it would've been fixed otherwise.***Has been released on both 2 CDs and 1 DVD at some point.

Sword of the Stars is a breakthrough 4X Strategy game brought to you by the core team behind the highly acclaimed title, Homeworld: Cataclysm. Sword of the Stars returns gamers to the action-packed roots of the 4X genre with some new twists, including a 3D starmap and real-time combat resolution in a 3D environment!

Playing as one of 4 unique races, gamers will explore planets, research new technologies and create empires in a hostile universe where weakness means extinction and only the strongest will survive. Sword of the Stars provides quick, intuitive play, state-of-the-art graphics and tactical combat that make the game instantly involving and rewardingly fun.

FEATURES

* 4 distinct races - Human, Hiver, Tarkas and Liir - each with their own technology advantages and disadvantages.
* A powerful state of the art engine delivers breathtaking graphics and robust gameplay.
* Each race has a unique mode of transport between star systems, creating very different styles of play, depending on what race you choose to control.
* Slider bar controls and simplified interface to avoid the confusion of other games without sacrificing depth of gameplay.
* Over 150 distinct technologies to research on a dynamic tech tree that changes from game to game. While the core technology of the tree is consistent, certain offshoots are random from game to game. There is no perfect path up the tech tree to memorize and exploit, because the path keeps changing!
* New technology reflected in detailed ship models, weapons and combat effects. Over 40 weapons from six different weapon classes, in various size classes, from point defence, turrets, to massive spinal mounts!
* Players can design and build ships from three size classes - Destroyer, Cruiser, and Dreadnought - by mixing and matching ship sections (command, mission, and engines), then outfitting them with armour and weapons to suit their preference.
* Up to 8 players can play against the AI and one another over LAN or online.
* Choose from a variety of scenario campaigns to play alone or with friends, each adding more colour and depth to the Sword of the Stars universe.

Depths of Peril Soldak Entertainment2007Depths of Peril is a single player action RPG (role-playing game) with strong strategy elements. You play as a faction leader protecting the barbarian city, Jorvik, by destroying threatening monsters and completing quests. At the same time, you compete with rival factions to see who will rule the city. Barbarians choose their leaders by fighting to the death!

As a faction leader, you must deal with rival factions through diplomacy, trade, and in time, war. Between battles and raids against other barbarian factions, you build the most powerful faction possible, to withstand your enemies. Building the power of a faction involves exploring a fantasy world, slaying dangerous monsters, solving quests for the city, avoiding deadly traps, and plundering loot to share within your faction.

But in this world, actions actually have consequences, so take care. Annoying the powerful and aggressive Legion of Fear faction will cause them to declare war and destroy you. Ignored Orc uprisings in the Black Forest will cause even more trouble. Protect ally covenants that are being raided, because friends are hard to come by.
[Soldak]***DoP is a strange mixture of action-RPG and 4X strategy with focus on the former but the ultimate goals are that of the latter.***Minimum:

Hellgate: London Namco Bandai;Electronic Arts (Flagship Studios)2007Latest version: SP 1.2 (as of ?), MP 1.3d (as of 2008-07)***References:
* Diablo: Wirt's peg leg***2008-02-22 Korea, published by Hanbitsoft

Note that the original English version of Hellgate has been abandoned and Hanbitsoft continued to develop their release beyond that. They re-published their version internationally, but it has been changed noticeably from its origins and there is no update/upgrade path for original Hellgate: London owners to the Hanbitsoft version. The core game is still very similar, but Hanbitsoft's version resembles MMOs much more closely in terms of features (though still lacks open areas where all players fight for ).***The multiplayer part is similar to that of Guild Wars, with people gathering at the hubs (underground stations; a bit like location specific in-game lobbies) from where they head out into instanced combat/quest areas. So this is practically a MMO with the same experience available for single-player/offline users (minus the other players).***Minimum:

* 1.8 GHz CPU (2.4 GHz for Vista)

Hellgate : London is the first original title from premier developer Flagship Studios. Set in the near future, Hellgate introduces gamers to a world devastated by demon invasion. Players are thrust into a desolate city scorched by hellfire. Here, the few survivors must meld science and sorcery in order to gain a foothold against the minions of darkness and save the bloodline of humanity.

Hellgate : London combines the depth of role-playing games with the action of first-person shooters while offering infinite replayability and an individualized gaming experience complete with dynamically created levels, monsters, items and events. Players create a hero and then battle through innumerable hordes of demons while completing quests and advancing through experience levels and branching skill paths. A robust, flexible skill and spell system, highly-customizable items and a massive variety of randomly generated equipment allow players to create a hero that is truly unique.

FEATURES

* A New Perspective on RPGs
Combining the depth and customizability of role-playing games with the immersion of those played from the first-person, Hellgate is fast-paced but doesn't require lightning reflexes to achieve a high level of success.
* Unique and Appealing World
Explore an ominous post-apocalypse London alone or with friends. From ancient ruins long buried beneath once thriving streets to shattered cathedrals, fact and myth are blurred into an unceasing nightmare as the last remnants of humanity fight for their very souls.
* Character Classes
Fight against the demons of the underworld as one of several unique character classes. like the Templar, each class has a unique visual and game-play style based on its particular history and place in the world. Randomly generated items that can be modified in numerous ways ensure that heroes are distinct and individualized.
* Hell on Earth
Battle against a wide variety of demonic enemies, each with their own unique attributes, abilities, and vulnerabilities.
* Infinite Re-playability
With dynamically generated levels, massive quantities of randomly created items, chance events and story-driven quests, no two gaming experiences are ever the same. Differing levels of rarity and modification potential for items and skills also mean that every game played is a unique event.
* Single-Player and Online Multiplayer Support
While Hellgate : London stands on its own as a singleplayer game, it also provides a compelling multiplayer experience via a dedicated online gaming destination. By creating unique and individualized gameplay "instances" within a vast online community, Hellgate provides gamers with all the best parts of traditional massive multiplayer games, but without any of the common downsides.
