In the 15th and 16th centuries, peasant farmers, Buddhist monks, Shinto priests, and local nobles, inspired by a dismayed Jōdo Shinshu pacifist (who denounced the violence of Daimyo, advocated defense, but never rebellion), joined forces to violently rebel against the ruling Samurai. They came to be know as 一向一揆 (Ikkō-ikki, single-minded mobs)
