Maemo is developed by Nokia and mostly open source. Some components are proprietary. It is designed specifically for Nokia Internet Tablet based hardware using an ARM CPU. It uses APT with the added function of incrementally flashing the bios to install updates. It uses the MicroB web-browser (Mozilla) and has Flash and Java. GNU Core Utilities are replaced by BusyBox. It uses ESD and GStreamer. Skype software is included by default. The Maemo OS is easily customized allowing most any Linux application to be ported and can even be replaced with another Linux distro or Google Android. However, the wifi requires proprietary drivers.
