Puyo Puyo Tsuu  Compile1994The object of this head-to-head puzzle game is to clear your grid of falling patterns called puyos by forming chains of four or more same-colored puyos in a straight line or one of several geometric patterns. What makes this a challenging two-player contest is the fact that when you clear a chain of puyos from your grid, it drops a random piece of filler onto your opponent's grid. The more puyos you clear, the more you fill your opponent's grid, and if you can clutter up his grid enough to fill it to the top, you've won the game. An intriguing back story makes this an amusing experience for one or two players.***Kick ass 1 on 1 puzzle game.

[52]***R-Type is one of the ultimate shoot'em up classics.

You're pilot of the ultimate spaceship called ' R-Type ' and you're out to blast off the evil Bydo, an alien race that is annihalating anything in it's way. Fly through the original arcade stages and defeat many aliens with your weapons ( 3 Standard Weapons which are upgradable 3 Times, a set of missiles and some Super Charged Shot that does major damage ) and eventually reach huge guardians that are defending the entrance to each next stage.

R-Type is one of the best games on Master System. Great Presentation ( quite close to the Original ), challenging stages and some really cool bosses.
If you're into Shmups you have to get this.

Randar II: Revenge of Death Compile1989Randar II is a short RPG published in 1989 by Compile as a special DiskStation issue. The story is about a planet called Alkali, of which all the women mysteriously vanished. Space detective Randar sets out to solve the mystery and bring back the vanished women.
The game can be divided in four different sections. The first section consists of the villages and towns on the planets, where items and equipments can be bought and information can be gathered. The second section is the open field of the planet, which need to be explored. The third consists of a dungeon or cave and the fourth is the space map, where space travels can be made.
The battles are turn-based. Simple recovery items can be used, magic spells aren't incorporated in the game. Attacks can be made using either a sword or a gun.
An English translation of the game was made in 2000 by the MSX group Sargon.

Randar no Bouken  Kemsx (Compile)1989Randar 1 is a small RPG which was delivered as an extra game with a special edition of Compile's Disc Station. The game is almost entirely written in BASIC but it's speedy enough. The most interesting fact about this game is that it is the first part in the Randar-series, but probably also the least known.
Battles are turn-based. Various weapons and armours can be bought and equipped and various items can be used. Caves must be explored, item chests must be found.
The game takes place in a kingdom called Mamorth. You're of course the hero - Randar. Your task is to free Mamorth kingdom from the tiranny of Nesty Luba.

Randar no Bouken III: Yami ni Miserareta Majutsushi  Compile1990The third and final part of the Randar series. Randar 1 and 2 were relatively small RPG's that came with Compile's diskmagazine Disc Station. Randar 3 is a stand-alone game of great quality. This is an extended RPG with huge maps, many locations to explore, items and weapons to be found and a great variety of monsters. Although the game hasn't been translated to English yet, the scenario is quite a good one. MSX2labelimagesubject
Robo Aleste  Tengen (Compile)1992Robo Aleste is like MUSHA on the genesis, except far less intense, with too strong enemies and too weak weapons. But it does have CD music.
[ufoDave]***Best in the series. Hardly no flaws, this a wonderful vertical shooter for the Mega CD. Probably the best on the system with a studio quality soundtrack (which is a bit cheesy though), lots of anime cutscenes and killer graphics and gameplay. This game was released worldwide, and isn't that expensive. So there's no reason to skip it!

Romancia: Dragon Slayer Jr.  Tokyo Shoseki (Compile)1987Romancia is the third game in the "Dragon Slayer" series and ported from Japanese homecomputers. It is a rather typical Action-Adventure type of its era, where the biggest difficulty lies in finding out what to do and handle some nasty game design decisions. The game is not overly long or complex, but difficult nonetheless. Limited inventory space and it is easily to get stuck because you used an item unwisely. With a good walkthrough it was playable... until the last boss, which took just too many hits until killed. NESlabelimageminimize

Super Nazo Puyo Tsuu: Ruruu no Tetsuwan Hanjouki  Compile1996Game description from [[link:http://agtp.romhack.net/ Aeon Genesis]]:

Super Nazo (Puzzle) Puyo 2 is yet another game in that charming little Puyo Puyo franchise by compile, featuring everyone´s favorite colored jellybean-like blobs! Of course, Super Nazo Puyo 2 plays rather differently from the rest of the Super Puyo Puyo games (which you may have played as either Kirby´s Avalance or Dr. Robotnik´s Mean Bean Machine.) In SNP2, you play as Lulu (or whatever her name is), some other character in the Puyo Puyo series who surprisingly is NOT Arle Nadja. You go around the countryside talking to people, who challenge you to solve puzzles in a Puyo Puyo environment! It gets pretty difficult too!

Game description from [[link:http://www.romhacking.net Romhacking.net]]:

This game rocks! It’s an RPG/Columns-type-game hybrid. I know it’s a tough sell, but hear me out! You wander around in an RPG-type environment–you know the type: overhaed-view, tile-based, blah, blah, blah. But when you encounter enemies, instead of being thrust into your standard menu-driven combat system, you have to play this Columns/Tetris falling blocks game and win. It’s fun–really! And it has Puyo Puyo characters. Which means find this ROM and play it now or I’ll track you down and break you in half! ^_^.

Super Puyo Puyo 2  Compile;LMS Music (Compile)1995Game description from [[link:http://www.romhacking.net Romhacking.net]]:

Puyo Puyo is a very popular block-a-riffic puzzler made for a variety of platforms. What's block-a-riffic? Well, it's one of those games where blocks rain down from the heavens and you have to match a bunch of the same color and make them disappear. In fact, the original Puyo Puyo was ported as Kirby's Avalanche and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, respectively for Nintendo and Sega consoles. This version has a lot of nifty extras, like a story mode and whatnot. Isn't Arle the cutest?! I mean, damn! CUTE.

The Guardian Legend  Irem;Brøderbund (Compile)1988"The Guardian Legend" is an enjoyable mix of Zelda-style overhead Action-Adventure and vertical scrolling shoot'em up stages. Both parts are technically very well done, the game never seems to slow down even with lots of objects on screen. Compile showed again that they knew how to make this work. The game has lots of content with over 10 areas to explore on foot and over 20 shoot'em up "corridors". Lots of upgradable extra weapons. Quite impressive especially considering they packed this all in just a 1Mbit cartridge. After some areas the whole procedure felt a bit like rinse and repeat. There were no real surprises any more and the game started more and more to throw the same color-swapped enemies at you. But altogether a very good game.***The gameplay alternates between shoot'em up and RPG for a lot of fun (not to mention the fun lightsaber weapon and a two-bladed one, 11 years before The Phantom Menace).***Long ago in a distant galaxy, an alien race sent a huge world --called Naju-- hurling towards Earth, loaded with cargo of mysterious life forms.

During the long journey, these creatures have multiplied and become increasingly evil-- and now Naju teems with evil. However, deep within this complex globe are self destruct mechanisms that can be activated to destroy it before it reaches Earth.

Now, you must battle your way deep within Naju's labyrinths to destroy the alien world. You are the guardian of Earth and your saga will become The Guardian Legend.***Great gameplay and music track. Definitely the best game for the NES, not to mention that the main character is the first scantily-clad female. XD
[Zhu-sama]***Broderbund merely brought this game to the West, they had no part in making it. Compile developed the game and Irem published it. Guardian Legend, or Guardic Gaiden, is sort of a sequel to the MSX game Guardic. Anyway, this is an awesome game--a true classic. The gameplay is fantastic, diverse and challenging. You owe it to yourself to play this game. I would rank this as one of the best games for the NES.

Zanac A.I. FCI (Compile)1987About a year after the original Famicom Disk System version in Japan, FCI brought a cartridge version to the US. Zanac is an early shooter from developer Compile, the team that would eventually program some of the best classic shmups ever. And already they show their skills with this game. It is highly playable with a "modern" extra weapon system and very fast, fluent graphics that don't flicker at all. Only the background graphics are the typical nondescript shapes that many old shooters have. The music is also well done. Even after a year of its initial release Zanac stays to be a very good shoot'em up game.***ZANAC is a vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up game that was released in November 1986. Take control of the state-of-the-art fighter, ZANAC, with the objective of destroying the bases of the mechanized enemy forces. Use your full array of regular weapons as well as eight special weapons to clear the 12 intense areas of the game. Be careful, though, as the game changes the degree of difficulty in real time based on how well you play. This ensures that it feels like you're experiencing a new game every time you play. Zanac A.I. Pony Canyon (Compile)1986There are two further "versions" of Zanac A.I. to be found:
- Zanac A.I.: 2nd Version (also titled Zanac 2 or Zanac '87)
- Zanac 3

There is some discussion about the game in the MSX community. It seems to be not official versions of the games, but seem to fall into the hacks/mods/unauthorized patch category. Thus there are no separate entries for those in UVL.***

[52]***One os the best shooters for the MSX, Zanac puts you in control of a space ship against an army of enemies of various types, and the enemy bosses are in the format of eyes. You could power-up your ship if eight different weapons, and the game have eight different levels in various type of terrains, including water, desert and volcanic terrains.
