Dynasty Warriors 4 Empires  Koei2004Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires introduces a new stage and strategy system to the series' frenetic battlefield action. In the new system, the game opens with a map of Ancient China, fractured into 24 different regions. Players start with one region, and then choose another region to invade or defend. Officers will recommend a strategy or policy, and then combat begins. Victory goes to the first warrior who unifies all 24 regions under a single kingdom. Along with the three most influential kingdoms of Wu, Wei, and Shu, Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires includes smaller kingdoms not seen in any previous Dynasty Warriors titles. The game also combines the multiplayer action of Dynasty Warrior 4's VS and Challenge Modes into one furious VS Mode. In the revamped mode, players can send attacking soldiers to the opposing player's screen by knocking-out enemies with a Musou attack. Redesigned based on user requests, the advanced Character Edit mode triples the number of character models and voices players can use to create their own warrior, plus player-created warriors can use any weapon in the game. There are also new playable warriors and more officer abilities--from powerful new Charge attacks to taunting "Challenges."

Fuuun Shourinken  Jaleco1987Except for a very few C64 titles like [game=#36503]International Karate[/game], I really don't like 8-bit 1vs1 fighting games very much. Fuuun Shourinken is one of those mediocre not really well playable fighting games. Hit detection is strange, graphics are average and if you are unlucky you are dead in about 5 seconds. Well in 1987 there weren't much similar titles, so genre fans might have had some fun with it. Famicom Disk Systemlabelimageminimize
Fuuun Shourinken: Ankoku no Maou  Jaleco1988Gameplay-wise "Fuuun Shourinken: Ankoku no Maou" isn't much of an improvement compared to its predecessor, which appeared a year before. Beating a handful enemies in 1vs1 combat... and thats it. They embedded the fighting gameplay into a little story, represented by a pictures and text after each fight. You have a limited choice after each scene, mostly to go "right" or "left" leading to different opponents, but it seemingly has no effect on the overall story at all. While this is a nice extra, it doesn't make the game more playable. Famicom Disk Systemlabelimageminimize
Ganbare Goemon 2  Konami1989 NESlabelimageminimize
Ganbare Goemon: Karakuri Douchuu  Konami1986This is the first console game in the long-running Goemon series (only preceded by the arcade game [game=#3834]Mr. Goemon[/game], which gameplay-wise has not much to do with the Famicom version). You play the thief Goemon, some kind of Japanese Robin Hood, based on a real historical figure. In each stage you have to find three passes, which opens the gate to the next of the thirteen stages. Passes can be found in hidden underground passages, be bought in shops (amongst other useful extra items), or be found in first-person-view mazes. Money can be collected from slain enemies or hidden coin chests. Technically the game is very good and rather advanced for a mid-1986 title. I believe this was the very first 2Mbit cartridge and it shows with many different graphical environments. This game would eventually start a very successful game series, at least in Japan. However, the game does not yet feature the many hilarious characters and situations of the later Goemon games.***The Japanese title translates to something like 'Go Goemon! Tricking Adventure'. Karakuri means to trick or take a person by surprise (usually through mechanical means), but a karakuri ningyo (typically just called a karakuri) is also a type of Japanese puppet. The title may be a pun. Goemon is essentially the player's puppet during the game; however, the character of Goemon is also a thief (based on a real person), and thus his role in life is to trick people and steal things.

Kanshakudama Nage Kantarou no Toukaidou Gojuusan Tsugi  Sunsoft (Tose)1986You are playing a fireworks-maker on his way from the city of Kyouto to the city of Edo (Tokyo) via the Toukaidou route. This route is a famous historical route which consists of 53 stations. Each of the games levels represents one station of the route. Since the game only has 21 levels not all stations are included. And of course the route is dangerous, because you are followed and attacked by henchmen of an evil merchant who wants to steal the secret of fireworks manufacturing from you. The game itself is a standard platform game. You make your way from left to right, avoid enemies or kill them via throwing explosives. On the way you can collect hidden items which help passing some otherwise especially nasty enemies. Also you have to find gold coins, which at some points in the game make a platform appear without which you can't progress further. Graphics and music are not more than average and the jump controls feel strange and slow. NESlabelimageminimize

Kyonshiizu 2  Taito1987Kyonshiizu 2 is based on the rather silly HongKong martial arts/horror/comedy movie-series "Mr. Vampire" and not a sequel to another game. The goal is to defeat several evil demons which are hidden in some towers around a city. In the city itself you are talking to people, buy stuff. All with the goal to receive a costume with which you can enter the evil realms inside the towers. The action sequences are side-scrolling beat'em up sequences. Since there is no translation of this game available it is hardly playable for non-Japanese people. From the bit I have played and seen on videos the game does not look promising and I wonder what the 2Mbit on the cartridge were used for. The adventure/RPG part of the game seems to be ok, but nearly only takes place around the same town. The action sequences are not well playable and features only a very limited number of enemies. All the towers are graphically the same again and again. Rating the game is hard due to the language-barrier, but even if a fan translation and proper walkthrough should appear some day I will likely not go back to this game.***The cartridge has a battery door to replace the Save RAM battery when it eventually dies.***In this game you wander around a town, talk to people and buy stuff like in a typical RPG. But then you have to get through beat'em up style sections, fighting against enemies. It´s really hard to understand what´s going on if you don´t know Japanese.
It is based on a Taiwanese martial arts movie.
