0 A.D.  Wildfire Games2009textured polygons***0 A.D. is an original historical Real Time Strategy game that has been in development since June 2001 and was licensed under the GPL on July 10th, 2009 marking its first public release. It focuses on the major civilizations' interactions with Rome and military units; less on civilian interaction. Further focus is placed on the BC civilisations. Present will be Romans, Hellenes (Athenians, Spartans and Macedonians), Carthaginians, Persians, Iberians, Celtic Britons and Gauls. Egyptians, Franks, Huns, Goths, Dacians, and peoples from the far east are also being discussed in wildfire's extensive collection of historical articles. Historical cultures, subcultures, battles, equipment, languages, and people will be part of the game. For instance Ambrosius Aurelianus is a character and the Celts will have a slight agricultural advantage due to their use of plows. Attic Greek will be spoken. The battles, and politics and interactions of the Maccabees, Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, and are included (Wildfire staff include people of many faiths, including religiously faithful and devout atheist). Wildfire checks their facts with actual historians. However, they have admitted they will "circumvent" certain historical facts for the sake of balanced and fun gameplay, family friendliness, and simplicity required by the medium. Jesus will not be included as a character out of respect. They mention the possibility of fully historical, "WFG history mods", community modules, and characters, being added later. Nomadic cultures and fishing are planned for a later module. Wildfire will endorse high quality mods. There will be AI players and versatile team play witho or without them. Players can trade with any civilization on the map. Soldiers are also citizens with 'civilian responsibilities'. Their service to their country does not consist only of fighting battles. Units automatically upgrade themselves. Units automatically tend to their own health. Hero units based on historical figures are several times stronger than most units and have a special gameplay value. All units are basically historical, so there are no naming of them. Units can be captured and recruited or rarely defect. Structures play a part in battles; soldiers can fight on and inside structures (but there are not indoor maps). Terrain and structures are 3D and effect gameplay. Ships are done to scale and people and equipment placed realistically. There will be weather and seasons and effect there of. Provinces and Territories will be present in some modes but not all. There is an overall reduction of technology and economy micromanagement in favor of managing strategy and tactics. Food, wood, stone and ore will need to be collected and are exhaustible. Fog of War and Shroud of Darkness is optional. There is no line-of-sight. Random natural disasters will not occur, just historic ones. Pillaging is not managed by the player, it just occurs. Certain animals can be hunted or domesticated. There are no locked campaigns or enforced order but each campaign has its own sequence that must be followed. Cheat codes can be unlocked by completing campaigns. Campaigns are only for single player games; multiplayer games are a custom configured campaigns by the hosting system. Zooming is allowed and rotation is optional/per game supported. The camera is perspective. Camera continues to function during cut scenes. Cut scenes are performed with the existing game object, not separate videos. There is no multimonitor support built-in. The game will run in a window. The source code is platform independent but Wildfire is not doing an OSX version themselves. The community is encouraged to compile the code for other platforms. LAN/Internet games are cross-platform. Only single player mode can be paused. The current version (as 2010-02-12) is limited to 6 players. This will probably be increased to 8. A 56k connection is sufficient for 6 player games. Play session is designed to last 1 hour but can take as long as 3 hours. Uses TCP/IP for multiplayer. Will not use direct Modem, IPX, or direct cable link (unless your system can do TCP/IP over said cable ). Custom anti-cheat systems are being employed for both single and multiplayer games. Replays are no rewindable nor cross-system playable. However, they can be fast forwarded and the possibility of stopping a replay to play from that point remains. Extensive tools for modding and creating content for all aspects of the game are included (except for sounds, which must be ogg files created externally). Games scripting is done in javascript.

The content of the game is licensed under the BY-SA Creative Commons license. The game engine is original. Wildfire games has stated that the game will be downloadable and playable over the Internet at no cost. There will not be a demo version but the game will be split into separately downloadable modules. There may be a boxed version available for reasonable fee. The modular design is also intended to encourage community mods. Community discussion includes discussion of Tolkien, Arthurian, and Ancient Egyptian, inspired modules.

The people at Wildfire games are aware that there is no Year 0. "Indeed. Think of 0 A.D. as a hypothetical time period that never existed. It is a snapshot in time where major players of the classical ages were placed in an observatory. This is your chance to see them 'duke it out'. Your job as the player is to create the hypothetical and recreate the historical." -From the official web site.

Wildfire games is also the developer of Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. 0 A.D. which is otherwise unrelated to AoK. 0 A.D. is not a mod, add-on, or total conversion of any other game although in its initial planing stages it was to be total conversion of AoE2. The Last Alliance is a 'sister project' to 0 A.D. Resources are shared between the two.

[Box blurb]***Worlds collide in Armies of Exigo, a fantasy RTS where the boundaries of the battlefield are broken and war is waged both above and below the ground. This game takes strategy to new depths as elves, beasts, knights, and creatures of the darkness are locked in an epic battle for survival.

In the world of Exigo, where peace and prosperity have reigned for years, the empires of man and beast faces their greatest threat yet. A sinister force known as The Fallen has awaken to strike where the inhabitants of this world least expect - from underground.

Users will take control of massive armies, wage wars in the forests and river valleys of the surface, then descend into the caverns and catacombs of the underworld to face off against the dark evil.

Armies on all sides will have the ability to delve deep underground to travel unseen by foes or borrow up to the surface to unleash powerful attacks on unsuspecting enemies. The gamer must devise never before deployed strategies for combat and defense as attacks can come from all directions.

Conquer as the heavily fortified Empire and control an army of knights, dwarves, elves and gnomes. Ravage the plains with the nomadic Beasts, leading tribes of ogres, trolls and other fantastic creatures. Emerge from deep to consume the world of light with The Fallen – a powerful force of dark elves, fallen warriors, swarming insects and other horrific creatures of the dark.

Engage in an epic three-part single player campaign and save the world of Exigo from the evil that threatens to plunge the world into darkness. Or go online for massive multiplayer skirmishes with up to eight players striving to conquer the surface and underworld. Success can only be achieved through a balance of military might and strategic alliances.

* Stunning 3D visuals bring the characters and environments to life.

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars  Electronic Arts (EA Los Angeles)2007textured polygonsCnC3 is probably the hardest strategy game I know, and not because the AI is that good, but because it cheats so much. Even on the so called easy difficulty the game is frustratingly hard to even barely win (later) missions. Besides that I still like it, especially the revised GDI and the all new Scrin faction. As a game I would not recommend this to anyone but the masochistic players or diehard Tiberium series fans.***Latest version: 1.09 (as of ?)***March, 2047. A massive nuclear fireball explodes high in the night sky, marking the dramatic beginning to the Third Tiberium War and long-awaited return of the most groundbreaking Real-time Strategy franchise (RTS) of all time.

The critically-acclaimed Command & Conquer (C&C) series returns with Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars (C&C 3). Setting the standard for the future of RTS gaming once more, C&C 3 takes you back to where it all began—the Tiberium Universe.

In 2047, Tiberium has blanketed the Earth, which is now divided into zones based on the level of Tiberium infestation. Pristine Blue Zones represent 20% of the planet's surface and are the last refuge of the civilized world. Partially habitable Yellow Zones make up 50% of the planet's surface; most of the world's population lives in these war-torn and ecologically ravaged areas. The remaining 30% of the planet is uninhabitable, a Tiberium wasteland swept by violent Ion Storms. Red Zones are like the surface of an Alien planet.

The infamous Kane has returned to lead the Brotherhood of Nod in a massive global assault on the Global Defense Initiative and the few remaining Blue zones left on the planet. Only you can stop him. The fate of humanity – and the planet – is in your hands.

Featuring state-of-the-art, next-generation graphics, an epic story with live action, full-motion video sequences, and the classic fast-paced C&C style of play, C&C 3 sets the standard for the single player RTS experience.

When you decide to test your skills online, a suite of truly innovative features, such as the ability to transform online battles into a spectator sport, unfold.

Welcome back, Commander.

FeaturesFeatures

* Bigger – Play as the British or Germans in two intensely cinematic campaigns.
* Better looking – DX10 support and significant upgrades to the Essence Engine.
* Smarter – Improved vehicle AI and path-finding.
* More Realistic – All new weather effects directly impact the battlefield.
[Relic]***Introduces two new armies, the British 2nd and the German Panzer Elite, both with their own all new campaigns, too.

British are slow-moving and highly defensive army and apparently has movable base unlike all the other armies, as well as tank airdrop and many other interesting and unique abilities.

Panzer Elite on the other hand is a low number force of, you know, elite forces who're more suited for rushing the enemy in Blitzkrieg tactics and specializes on vehicular combat more than any other army.

Apparently You won't need to have Opposing Fronts to play against their armies after a new patch is rolled out for the original game, although you won't be able to play _as_ either of the new armies if you don't get the expansion, nor likely are you able to play the two old armies if you don't have the original, but you can still play against those who either have only the expansion or only the original even if you only have the other.

Dawn of War II  THQ (Relic Entertainment)2009textured polygonsIt’s the 41st Millennium in the Sub-Sector Aurelia – a cluster of worlds on the edge of the galaxy – where a battle of epic proportions is about to commence. Ancient races will clash across the planets that dot this sector of space, battling for the greatest of stakes – not only for control of Sub-Sector Aurelia – but the fate of each race.

With a focus on fast-action RTS gameplay, Dawn of War II brings to life the science fiction universe of Warhammer 40,000 like never before. Experience the intimate brutality of battle as you play through your chosen race’s epic campaign. Clash with the enemies on battlefield ablaze with visceral melee and ranged combat. Lead and develop your squads from raw recruits into the most battle hardened veterans in the galaxy. Also included is The Last Stand, a co-operative game mode featuring user controlled heroes fighting waves of enemies.***Deviating a lot from the first Dawn of War, this RTS plays more like a tactical-action (Commandos) than a strategy game (even with is touches of Command and Conquer)

Pros:
-Great controls, even to seem easy to use many units in the field.
-Equipment and leveling up: brings some roleplay elements in the development of your team.
-Tyranids.
-3 game modes: campaign (Space Marines cleansing places), coop defense (pick your hero and prepare to withstands waves of enemies) and multiplayer (a mix between a hero RTS and a MOBA)

Cons:
-Too many times soldiers adopt stupid covers (like being in the two sides of a trench)

6 of 10***DoW2 is perhaps best defined as tactical RPG than strategy RPG, with RPG elements mostly covering only how good your characters are doing their stuff and the otherwise equipment based system. There's no role-playing to speak of, though.***Tagline: "Your slavery to the False Emperor ends today!"***Latest version: 2.2.0 (as of 2010-04-??)

Version history:
* 1.3.2 (2009-05-14)***Although the devs/publishers touted a lot about new approach to RTS with the title, the only thing I noticed to be truly new (for the type of RTS DoW2 is) was that your troops couldn't be killed for real. Few units (4 squads total in this case) to somewhat non-linear tactical missions have been done before, although none before in my experience are so lenient on the matter. Your squads can't be killed since only the squad leader is actually important and he can only be knocked unconscious. If all squads become unconscious, emergency evac is pulled and the squads and their leaders are back to full strength as if nothing happened. You lose the turn in the overworld meta-game with a lost battle, but that's hardly anything new. The squad leaders gain experience and level up occasioally, which can be spent on very few areas of interest, and they can be given new equipment which most of the time just makes them more powerful, resilient and generally more efficient.

Each map has several teleport beacons scattered around where squads can be re-inforced, 2 secondary objectives which can be completed, and the primary objective. These are invariably(?) placed at the 4 corners of the tactical map. You can perform multiple attacks on single turn if you perform sufficiently well in a battle, but this is usually unlikely on harder difficulty settings. Each map also holds a boss at the primary objective location who usually has 200 times (and more) as much health as the more regular units from the tougher end. On harder difficulty settings these become rather dreary as you spend most of the time resuscitating unconscious squad leaders and doing round-trips to teleport beacons for re-inforcements than actually fighting the bosses.

In conclusion, the base tactical gameplay is interesting like in any other tactical game, but all value is lost from the fact that you can practically never lose and success in missions is purely based on how well you manage to keep at least one squad conscious long enough to get the others back up, beyond that, all your great tactical plans are pointless except to reduce the number of times you need to get the squads back up.***2009-01-19 gone gold

STORY

The story begins in A.D. 2741 on a distant planet called Morningstar Prime, a world initially colonized during the 24th century by Crayven Corporation from Earth. Morningstar Prime is but one of hundred planets discovered during mankinds reemergence from the Third World War. Morningstar Prime resembles Earth in many ways, it features indigenous life forms and a similar but still different flora and fauna.

The Great War with the Terran Empire has forced the originally democratic twelve city-states of Morningstar Prime to unite under one military leader and the flag of the Northern Star Alliance.

Battlefield Lost
During the First Stellar War in the 25th Century, the Crayven Corporation lost contact with the colony on Morningstar Prime, leaving them and the other colonies in the outer fringes to fend for themselves. In 2701, the new Terran Empire returned to the outer fringes with the intent of reconquering those colonies. The Imperial forces initially expected little resistance, having assumed that Morningstar would have been devastated and regressed like many other outer colonies.

The first Imperial strike was sudden and savage but the NSA managed to defeat the strike fleet, much thanks to the military competence and leadership of Fleet Admiral T Parker. The initial victory allowed NSA to improve their defenses and gear up for war. Fleet Admiral T Parker, an experienced and wise commander knew that they had won the battle but not the war. She initiated several projects that would search for a long-term solution to the threat from the Terran Empire.

In the following years, the war continued to be fought in space. For several years the Terran Empire attacked NSA space, destroying its colonies one by one, enslaving the people and getting closer to Morningstar Prime, the NSA home world. In 2730, after 29 years of constant war, NSA lost the last of their huge Fortress class ships along with the majority of all their capital ships in a decisive battle outside Morningstar. The NSA had in one single battle lost all their space capability and was at the mercy of the Empire. The Terran Empire ignored all negotiations for peace, they held true to their long-kept tradition: leave no pardon, no surrender.

Fortunately, Fleet Admiral T Parkers' legacy was already in action. Huge electromagnetic domes had been erected on Morningstar Prime to shield the largest cities from orbital bombardment. But they never had the time nor the resources to shield all cities; millions died in month long planetary bombardments. Several urban areas were reduced to piles of rubble and eerie graveyards.

The war entered a brief state of stalemate, as the Empire was unable to penetrate the shields while the NSA were being held prisoners in their own shields. The stalemate was broken when the Empire managed to land their first troopships in the bombarded regions outside the domes.

Jacob Angelus' Company has been sent to Morningstar capitol, where situation is becoming more and more critical and desperate.
For NSA, destiny is at hand; its only hope lies in an ancient and forgotten legend...
