This game is rediculously hard even by advanced difficulty text adventure standards.[spoiler=spoiler;close]Finding a pinned note and taking it will not lead to winning the game. The player must also take the pin. READ BOOK, alone is useless. The player must also READ COVER. Likewise, LOOK, is often useless where LOOK GROUND is required.. There are no indications of which directions a player may move. Not unheard of for text-adventures with North-South-East-West movement, But this one includes six additional possibilities. Players are forced to try all of them to discover the map. Many puzzles and combats
can be solved or avoided by taking actions from another room. Cartoon and magic logic is often mixed with real world facts and logic in very inconsistant ways. Cartoon example: how to make cement out of quicksand. Use lime of course. Lime, as in fruit[/spoiler]
The later text plus graphics version included some subtle visual hints but but really didn't decrease the difficultty.

This game is massive by any standards at 1024 total locations. That is 4 times larger than the overworld and dungeons of The Legend of Zelda. Everything is in real-time and offers no other respite than a few sparely place shops. Shops are also the only place games can be saved. Strength is the only stat. It is increased in small random increments only by drinking strength potions bought from shops. Currency does not come from killing monsters but only from rare chests dispersed throughout the labrynth. Killing monsters gains XP which mainly counts as a high score (since winning the game is unlikley). Most screens have monsters that will be there every time you arrive no matter if you have defeated them previously. There are also random monster encounters that happen everywhere except shops, there is no pause to escape them or leave time to make your own map.

Story:
In a future on Earth with too much magic and too much technology, a one-of-a-king technomagical artifact was created to keep balance between the two. Being more powerful than it was intended, it stifled all change for either. A powerful king decided to used technology to hide and negate the effects of the artifact. With the artifact sealed away in a labyrinth of traps and unnatural guard creatures magic began overwhelming technology. 200 years later, a hero is chosen to brave the labyrinth and recover the artifact.

Entering initials is explained in-game. Heroes are sponsored by nobles so when the hero is asked who their sponsor is, it's the player.

I admit not having played the game myself. This tag might not actually apply. I've decided to tag it because both professional and amateur reviewers commonly believe the game has only one level or sometimes two levels (but not universally, I found one reviewer, giving it an average score, who made it to level 3 and gave up further play). It in fact has 6 levels (the first level is replayed harder so one might say it has 5 levels). From its release to this very day, reviewers seem to fail to pass the first or second level. This alone is not enough. But there are also some owners of the game that don't believe in the other levels, even though the game's packaging advertises them.***

Your trapped in a the robot city, Robotropolis. You must navigate the city by designing and soldering logic circuits into discarded robots. You'll need to find batteries, battery chargers (unless you work extremely efficiently), keys, tokens, sensors, and microchips, among other things. But more important than any items you find in the game is the item resting between your shoulders, your brain. The puzzles in this game have no absolute solution (but hints and parts are sometimes provided for a solution predetermined by the game designers), instead you must design the solutions that you think will work. The unofficial sequel to [game=#20413]Rocky's Boots[/game]. Uses a much more advanced engine to drive very, very complex logic circuitry and animations. Although the puzzles in the game don't come close to needing the complexity this game is capable of delivering. It is educational, just don't tell anyone because this game is way to much fun to spoil.

In the Sewer level, you can find initials of 8 of the authors.

There are 4 sides to this program! Depending on what version you have, all sides of the disks may contain useful chips. Check'em out.

The copy protection of this game will prevent the soldering iron from working (even if legitimately used). The disks are a modified DOS 3.3 format. Enter B942:18 in the Apple's monitor program, copy the disks, then Enter B942:36. Edit the disks and change $000FD2 and $040EEB to 38. Now you have disks suitable to dump for emulation.

The graphics are nice, the music is good and the game is huge. The game has major flaws however. Some of them are not uncommon for an early NES game. Many necessary items are very well hidden in non-obvious spots. The difficulty level is too high. In this game the beginning is even the hardest part of the game. Being badly equipped you have barely a chance againts the many monsters. Sometimes when you run over a certain spot you are teleported into a dungeon. And you cannot immediately leave the dungeon, until you find the exit. Making things worse, the dungeons are huge 16x16 screen mazes with many difficult monsters. And only in these dungeons you can find shops where you can buy some better equipment to survive the final seven towers where seven bells are hidden, which you must find and destroy in order to challenge the end boss. Now with a walkthrough and cheat at hand I could avoid the biggest frustration, but I understand people who say that this game is a game design disaster.***"Mashou" is used in official documentation.

Journey through this 3D looking game to collect the evil magic bells from the 7 bell towers and burn them in the sacred flame.

Mashō literally means "Evil Bell" an is a pun of 魔性 which means meaning "devilishness." It was supposed to be titled "Hell's Bells," in English but this title qualified for Nintendo's unwritten censorship rules. Oddly, there are Holy Crosses shown all through the game and the game is pretty blatant that God himself has personally asked the game's protagonists to complete this quest.

This game has a very long crawl screen of text. Possibly the longest crawl of any game previous and I can't think of a longer since. The text mentions that the castle explored in the game is actually under construction. This can thinly justify the level structure.

[Zerothis]***I'm surprised to find this game listed on many 'worst games of all time' lists. Ya, its insanely hard. And true, the character and enemies moves in plain 2D even though the enemies are (not) placed in a weird pseudo 3D non-existent environment. And, I'll admit, generally hidden/invisible entrances are used for required main levels instead of just secret bonus areas. And, ok, 20 hit points for the first enemy encountered in the game that isn't even a boss and doesn't even have a name, and doesn't even have a face, or a brain, or limbs, or multiple colors, is a bit excessive. Oh and instead of finding a way to the remotest part of the dungeons, grabbing the treasure and being teleported out, the player is teleported into the remotest part of the insanely complex dungeons, loses treasures, and must find their own way out. It could be worse, imagine if it had no continue option (which is easily exploited btw. [spoiler]Start the game, die, then change the first two letters of your continue password to "EF" or "FE".[/spoiler] Wimpy). [b]However, I like it for the challenge[/b], I find the false 3Dishness very retro (by 1986 standards), in a good way. This game proceeded [gameid=9176]The Legend of Zelda[/gameid] and in many ways its better, imo. The size of dungeons and the order of their 'completion' are superior. Deadly towers was actually the 2nd NES game I ever played after Super Mario Bros. It took me about 300 hours to beat. [b]This game gets 4.5 stars by me.[/b]

HES Published the cartridge in Australia in two versions. One was a piggyback cartridge, requiring a licensed game be plugged into the back in order to satify the lockout chip. This is a remake of the original Legend of Zelda. The graphic overhaul is immediately apparent but there are a few other subtle changes. Most changes make the game not necessarily easier, just a bit less frustrating. Save or Continue, and Link's hearts remain unchanged or filled to three if they were below that. Boss fireballs not deflectable and Stone Statue fireballs deflectable looked identical in the original, now players can see the difference. Dungeon rooms are rarely so square as they were. Blocks are often replaced by walls where appropriate. And rooms that used to be a pattern of blocks are not a more organically shaped area with various obstacles to maneuver around. The new room shapes and smoothed out terrain means there are less places that look like bombable walls, so bombable walls are easier to find. Most notable it the changes in dungeon layout, where are not so much changing the rooms as it is replacing the room-to-room tunnels with a simple stairway (instant arrival at the other end). New pathways have been added. And dead ends and pointless treks into obscure corners of the dungeons are virtually eliminated by adding something useful or even necessary to them. A good example of this is in the first dungeon. In the original, Link can go left and get a key by defeating enemies. Or, Link can go right and get a key by defeating enemies. Or, both, if the player choses not to or does not knows where bomb to avoid using keys. In this remake, Link can only go left. When enemies are defeated, the staircase must be opened and this leads to the right room where the enemies must be defeated to open the exit back to the entry room. Another trick is make dead-end paths useful by having pots in the rooms. This way, players can now grind for hearts and money on a path that was just a waste of time in the original. Also there's more completely optional secrets to discover. Certain room based puzzles in the dungeons have completely new solutions. Player will find themselves using items in ways they are used in other Zelda games and in unique ways. These are usually easy and nearly intuitive. Along the lines of encountering something new in a room in a dungeon on the way to the boss; using the item collected in the same dungeon in a on the new thing to solve the puzzle. These are not just an added step, these teach the player. These new tricks learned in the dungeon can be used elsewhere to find a whole new set of secrets that have been added to the game. Also, use old tricks in new places to find the some of new secrets. This aptly named 1st quest is but only the 1st, no 2nd quest follows on defeating Ganon (to the best of my knowledge).

Link put his weapons in the royal armory, because he had no need for them any longer, and the Triforce was placed in the throne room and heavily guarded. Link moved to the kingdom of Tenn and began to raise a family. But one fateful day Link was killed by a group of angry moblins; not even his great skill could save him. For over 10 years Hyrule reigned as the largest kingdom in the world, but the remaining band of Ganon's army sought tirelessly to revive their once great leader. After 11 long years they finally suceeded. Ganon easily retook the Triforce in the absense of Link and brought Hyrule to its knees. 9 years later Ganon grew angry because even though he destroyed Hyrule, the three daughter kingdoms still prospered, so he sought to capture and destroy them as well. He began by kidnapping the princess Julie of Frellan. Then Ganon created strong-holds (in each Ganon put Link's weapons to keep them from any adventurous soul) in each of the kingdoms and sent his armies out to destroy the land.
