Adventure Island  Hudson Soft (Hudson Soft;Westone)1986[media=youtube]https://youtu.be/dwxJ7QO3hlk[/media]***

[29]***
[27]***Adventure Island is the NES version of Sega's [game=#158027]Wonder Boy[/game], only with having the main character and music changed. It is a simple and fun platformer with colorful graphics and really good gameplay and controls. Some later levels are rather hard to beat, especially when you die and must start the section again without a weapon. There is a life bar that functions as some kind of time limit. You refill the bar by collecting food. At the day of its (Japanese) release this might be the best Famicom/NES platform game since [game=#5128]Super Mario Bros.[/game] made its appearance.***A mysterious tropical paradise known as Adventure Island is the setting for this side-scrolling action game. The evil Witch Doctor has kidnapped Tina, the true love of Master Higgins. To save her, you must safely guide Master Higgins through eight perilous stages - including dense forests and creepy caves - while defeating all of the enemies in your path. Each area is made up of four rounds filled with enemies determined to stop you in your tracks. In addition, as time passes, Master Higgins's vitality is automatically drained. To keep going, he must eat constantly by grabbing fruit, milk and whatever other goodies he can as he races toward his goal. Sometimes eggs containing miraculous items like axes to throw at enemies or honey that grants temporary invincibility will appear. Use items skillfully to help you clear the areas. At the end of each area you'll face the Witch Doctor, who you must defeat to advance. Go, Master Higgins, go!***A platform game that is simply an altered version of Sega's Wonder Boy. Help Master Higgins save his girlfriend!
The Japanese title means 'Master Takahashi's Adventure Island'. Takahashi is the original Japanese name for Higgins.

[27]***Great game geared towards a younger audience but unless you can play the game for 12 hours nonstop you will never finish the game. There is no password or save game state when the game includes tons of levels. However, the game is very challenging and that means lots of fun. Also with the advent of emulators and save-state features this could be useful in saving your spot and continuing later.

Akumajō Dracula  Konami1986This is the first Castlevania game ever and it was perhaps the best-looking game for the Famicom/Famicom Disk System so far with great and varied background graphics and sprites. Music is also very good and memorable. Konami really understood early on how to program high quality games for that console. Playability is also quite good but there are a few issues. Most prominent one the fact that when you are hit by a monster you are pushed back quite a bit, which very often results in falling down platforms and to your death. In this Famicom Disk System version you can save your game's progress on disk, making it a bit easier than the US NES version, which was released several months later in 1987.***The Japanese title means 'Demon Castle Dracula'.

Should be tagged with [code]windowed[/code] in that case. [52]***Included in Sega Mega Drive Classic Collection (Steam version)***A poor excuse of a platformer with some gambling. Music is boring and repetitive and the design of levels seems made with copy and paste.

[27]***Also included in Classic Collection (aka Mega Games 4-in-1), released in Europe in 1996 and published by Sega, rated ELSPA-3, that included [game=#9802]Flicky[/game], [game=#9845]Gunstar Heroes[/game], [game=#9535]Altered Beast[/game] and [game=#9530]Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle[/game].***Similar to 'Alex Kidd in Miracle World' with many of its elements making a reappearance (helicopter, swimming, motorbike and even the last level). The game is quite good, but I didn't like the 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' game because it is too much based on luck. The overall difficulty level isn't very high though and the game is rather short.***When King Thor was kidnapped, his son, Alex Kidd, held out hope that his father would return to their kingdom on Planet Aries. Finally, it was revealed that he was being held captive on Planet Paperock. As Alex, players race to his rescue through 11 levels, battling enemies and avoiding obstacles while winning coins that will buy special items and vehicles. At the end of each level, players encounter a boss and enter into a match of "Rock, Paper, Scissors." Throwing the right symbols puts players ever closer to bringing King Thor home; throwing the wrong symbols squashes them beneath a heavy weight.***Alex Kidd was quite popular on the Master System, so it was just a matter of time until we could play a Mega Drive Version.
And here it is, a new Alex Kidd Game. First of all you see the nice graphics, which are close to the Original but use the power of the Mega Drive in Terms of Sprite Size, Animations and overall presentation.

The Game itself isn't that great, the changed to much from the classic and messed up a fine game.

The Janken Game is now everywhere, the Bosses don't follow a system, the Controls aren't so great either and the Song Remixes don't fit.

Fans of the Master System Classic will be dissapointed, everybody else who wants a good little Plattformer will propably like it.

Almana no Kiseki  Konami1987[media=youtube]Xbe_VCYrWJY[/media]***In "Almana no Kiseki" you control an "Indiana Jones" look-a-like on a quest to retrieve a stolen magical stone to peaceful village people. You main tool in this game is a grappling hook to reach higher platforms. And thats pretty much necessary because the hero is a lousy jumper, which is my main complaint about this game. The controls are not that good and I expected a little bit better from a Konami game. Jumping on moving platforms and using the grappling hook can be quite difficult to achieve. Graphics and music are still quite good for its time though and it is somehow enjoyable if you can overcome the difficult controls. Famicom Disk Systemlabelimageminimize

Astro Robo Sasa  ASCII (Bits Laboratory)1985Astra Robo Sasa is an early and rather obscure action title for the Famicom. What makes this game special is its control method. You are floating through each screen. Shooting your gun not only kills enemies but also pushes you in the opposite direction of where you shot at. Your goal is to collect all energy packs in each level. Often these cubes must be shot free to get to them. The game tries to have a good amount of different looking levels with different looking environments, which is a nice plus. The control method though needs getting used to and might not be everybody's taste. NESlabelimageminimize
Athena  SNK (Micronics)1987
[100]***Before I started playing this game I read that this is considered to be one of the weaker NES games out there. At first I was pleasantly surprised, considering that this game looks much better than the (quite bad looking) C64 version that I already knew (and didn't like). And the first level wasn't bad at all. But the game gets worse with each level. The difficulty level is much too high. Even with walkthrough and cheats I had to curse this game numerous times. Controls are bad and there is much much sprite flickering. When being hit, you get thrown back too far. With the wrong weapon choice you suddenly are stuck in places where it is necessary to break walls and backtracking is not possible, or bosses become unbeatable. Important items are too well hidden and suddenly you find yourself at the beginning of a level and ask yourself what you have done wrong and what item you might have missed.

Babel no Tou  Namco1986Babel no Tou is a puzzle game set in a platform environment. The aim of each level is to reach the exit door to the next floor. To reach the exit you must use L-shaped blocks to build bridges. In the later of the 64 standard and another 64 pro-levels, monsters roam through the floors, which you should either avoid, kill via throwing a block on their head or - even better - trapping them inside blocks. The concept is fresh and motivating and plays quite well. The difficulty level though is extremely high and only puzzle-experts who can think of sometimes unconventional solutions will stand a chance to beat some of the trickier levels. Graphics are ok, but features the same graphical theme throughout the whole game and thus lacks in variety. Same goes for the music. NESlabelimageminimize

Batsu & Terii Makyou no Tetsujin Rasu  Use1987Batsu & Terry is based on an 80's baseball-themed manga series. You control either a baseball throwing guy or a baseball bat swinging guy. The game doesn't offer much fun. The levels are full of re-occuring elements and mostly just boring. Most enemies you should just avoid instead of killing them. And the graphics and sound are by far not good enough to draw some positive attention to the game. I mean I have played much worse games on the Famicom/NES, but in the end "Batsu & Terry" struggles to be even a mediocre game. NESlabelimageminimize

In times of crisis the Spirits of the Forest may be summoned to sacrifice themselves for your needs,
they will weaken certain enemies and destroy others but use them wisely as you only start with
two spirits though you may find additional ones along the route.
