Another World  Lexicon Entertainment (author;DotEmu)2006Also known as Out Of This World™, Another World is a pioneer action/platformer that released across more than a dozen platforms since its debut in 1991. Along the years, Another World™ has attained cult status among critics and sophisticated gamers alike.***activation limit - can be activated only 3 times (supposedly this is triggered during installation), before you're meant to buy another license for the game. Only one of the releases used this, most don't.***Mostly contains some improved graphics and music, but offers also classic mode with none of the new data used.

2006-04-14 release was by Eric Chahi himself.

Lexicon seems to have published this as "Another World 15th Anniversary Edition" on 2007-02-23.

Another World  Lexicon Entertainment (Icculus;DotEmu)20132013-09-16 saw the release of the native version of this game. It had been enjoyed by Linux gamers previously via engine remakes, visualization, and emulation, with several official outlets providing these options as well. Icculus noted many features of this game made porting simpler than usually. The game has already gotten the OpenGL treatment with the Mac 20th Anniversary Edition. The game originally used a virtual machine to run data, meaning only the virtual machine needed porting rather than the entire game. The 20th Anniversary Edition also saw virtual machine ported to C++ (the original was assembly); Icculus didn't even need to port that, it compiled as-is. The original used textured polygons construed from vector graphics (revolutionary at the time). This was virtually a separate feature from the rest of the game. Both the 20th Anniversary Edition and original were never hard coding their graphics to the video RAM (except for the background image). So this bit can easily be sent to the GPU, no CPU entanglements, no RAM entanglements. What's left to do is, get the image to the desktop, get the sound to speakers, get the input (keybooard or gamepad) to the machine.

This native port allows for playing the original or the enhanced 20th Anniversary Edition.

[97]***The game allowed switching between PAL and NTSC and stretching the screen to fit independently. While this was intended to let the user display the image how they preferred on a 4:3 monitor or TV, it had the unintended effect of allowing square pixels and an undistorted image when viewed anamorphicly on a 16:10 monitor. The aspect ratios and letterboxing were intended, widescreen support was not, so the [gametag=widescreen]widescreen[/gametag] tag does not apply here.***

It plays a little like prince of persia. The game is set in a strange alien world. Your job is to make your way out of it. Interesting puzzles, freaky atmosphere and original graphics make this one stand out.

One of the best game of it's kind. By the way,if you want to really enjoy it, I suggest you get the Snes version (it's got music..)

Hotel Dusk: Room 215  Nintendo (Cing)2007Los Angeles, 1979. Players take the role of Kyle Hyde, an ex-cop turned salesman trying to track down a missing friend. Clues lead to an eerie, old hotel rumored to have one very strange room – a room where wishes are granted. Players check in and get ready for a night of surprises as they meet a cast of unusual characters and try to unravel the mystery in Hotel Dusk: Room 215, a gritty new graphic adventure for the Nintendo DS.

Players hold their Nintendo DS like a book and use the touch screen to grill characters, search for clues and solve mystifying puzzles.

Players follow the plot twists and turns as they hunt for their missing friend and investigate the mysteries of Hotel Dusk. The DS system is held like a book, which allows characters on the screens to face left or right for more realistic conversations. The unique controls let even novices enjoy themselves. The unique hand-drawn character portraits and their animations are in black and white, making them exceedingly distinctive and able stand out, graphically speaking, from the rest of the game. In the tradition of Another Code, the use of the DS to solve riddles is alive and well in Hotel Dusk: Room 215.***

Prince of Persia Brøderbund1989The source code (documented assembly language) was backed up to 3.5 disks and shelved by its creator in 1990. And then misplaced. After the search was long abandoned then unreadable disks were found. After a restoration effort, on April 7, 2012, Jordan Mechner published the source code on github. A vaguely stated licensed for "study, modification, running it, etc." was specified. This statement also emphasised that "Ubisoft alone has the right to make and distribute Prince of Persia games." But this source code actually remains licensed under its original license, which is fully proprietary, which by its by definition not legally available for study, modification, running, etc... So any body who studies, modifies, and/or then runs the code risks being sued, arrested, and/or jailed at some future date. Trademarks still apply (owned by UbiSoft), copyright is still in force, UbiSoft still retains exclusive license. Commercial use has not been expressly granted. In fact, no uses at all have been legally granted. The license fails to mention derivative works so copyright law is in effect for those. This means merely looking at the source code can taint (legally) any thing a developer ever does for the rest of their career and actually creating a derivative work would be illegal.***The original version.

Trivia:
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer expressed interest in creating a movie based on this game. In a 2007 interview he said "I guess it's the 8th or 9th Century, but that could change to. It might change a little bit, we're not sure yet. It'll definitely be a period film; we're not going to make it contemporary." In all fairness however, the reporter had lead him into this error by asking "Do you envision any challenges of trying to film in the mid ages? Is it the mid ages?" and there was also a writer's strike at the time.

Mechner produced the unique animation style by studying reference footage of his brother preforming the character's acrobatics and roto-scoping said footage. The title and story strongly suggest this game takes place in the Achaemenid Empire, also popularly identified as the Persian Empire. This would 550 BC to 330 BC, well within classical antiquity; even likely with a liberal definition of the Persian Empire, (8th century BC to 651 AD). However, the game contains anachronisms such as the word "Sultan" and "Grand Vizier". Not surprising since it was influenced by Jordan Mechner's fascination with A Thousand Nights and a Night tales which are themselves full of anachronisms. The player has 60 minutes (real-time limit) in which to rescue the princess (did).

SDLPoP  author2014The ubiquitous original Prince of Persia ported to SDL and modern systems with . This port is modable (total conversions). It also has the option of individually turning on or off, any feature, quirk, or bug that ever existed for any port of the game. Time limit can be set and optionally count cut-scene/music time. Adds force-feedback, haptic feedback. Sensible features like guards break your fall if you land on them, slamming into a wall will shake nearby loose tiles (so you don't have to step on them or jump up into them) and Iaido strikes (draw and strike in a single stroke). Finally, there are built-in cheats. You can, for example, play with more time, less time, or infinite time.

A young foreign prince is in love with the Princess. This is a threat to Grand Visir Jaffar who illegally controls the throne in the Sultan's absence and intends to legitimize his rule through marriage. Jaffar kidnaps the foreign prince and locks him in the dungeon. In 1 hour, the Princess must marry the Jaffar or be killed. Play as the foreign prince. Solve puzzles, find items, find a sword, fight guards, escape and save the Princess.
