13 Ghosts Tandy (Software Affair)1984***The title is a reference to a partially 3D* black and white movie titled "13 Ghosts" made in 1960. However, the game is not based on the film. (Apparently the ghosts, but not the actors or scenes, could been seen in 3D in anaglyph prints of the film)

Check out the video. Not impressed? Well, maybe you didn't know the TRS-80 had no sound, not even a beeping speaker, and no sound cards. The music and sound effects heard in the video are the interference one would hear if the placed an AM radio near the TRS-80 while playing this game. The game is also visually impressive for TRS-80.

Uses the AD&D ruleset. is set in Forgotten realms where Baldur's Gate is a location. This game begins the Baldur's Gate series. Players can create and name Human, Elf, Dwarf, Half-Elf, Halfling, and Gnome characters of either gender of the Fighter, Mage, Thief, Cleric, Ranger, Druid, or Paladin classes. Some classes can engage in sorcery according to the AD&D ruleset. Players can also dual-class or multi-class according the AD&D ruleset. In a 1-player game, the player controls an entire party, in multiplayer games, each player can control one or more characters (or none at all). Players must cooperate, there is no competitive options in the game. There are multiple ways for a character to summon underlings for temporary help. Characters must sleep or suffer the effects of fatigued. Characters can also become poisoned, confused, charmed, enfeebled, paralyzed, turned to stone, encumbered, impaired, or drunk if the character does avoid situations that lead to such effects. The detail of the fantasy world this game takes place in seems to qualify it as belonging to the high fantasy genre. Characters can use bows, crossbows, slings, knives, swords, axes, bludgeons, pole arms, whips, or fight unarmed (non-lethal). A vast number of items can be aquired from stashes in the world, on defeated foes, or purchased from shops or individuals. The AI of the player's characters can be programmed in a scriptable language. But this is highly optional as adequate AIs are provided or the player can pause constantly to direct everybody with point-n-click commands; then unpause for as long as those commands are helpfully being executed. (Documentation for Scripting can be found on the 1st CD. Users have created AIs that can be found online and loaded into an existing game). Many NPC can be joined to the party and left to retrieve later. Some will leave if they are unhappy with the main characters actions. Evil people prefer the main character to do evil, good characters prefer good. Some NPC have their on purposes for joining and will stay of leave depending on the changing conditions matching their goals or not. The experience system follows the AD&D ruleset. This includes XP awarded for defeating enemies and for completing quests (which are documented on-the-fly in an automated journal that also records some plot information). The XP required to level up are preset according the the AD&D ruleset. When leveling up (at the players initiation, once the require XP are collected), skill points are awarded that can be distributed to a subset of skills available to the character's class (not all AD&D skills are included in this game). Several small village/towns can be visited and Baldur's Gate is a massive 10+ levels (not counting interiors that include multistory buildings) of civilization that approaches the definition of a city. Several large keeps make up whole levels (again not counting interiors that include multistory buildings). Several tall towers can be explored. Many multilevel mines and dungeons can or must be explored. Developers comments can be read on some tombstones a cemetery.
Bauldur's Gate has a sewer system as a location.
. Books, scrolls, and documents in the game offer extraneous details about the Forgotten Realms and Bauldur's Gate area, plot background, plot information, and character advancement training (rare). This game is available in a 5 CD set (original), 3 CD set, or on a single DVD to save on disc swapping. The game can be configured to run from the various CD or have them installed to hard drive per CD. But, upon running the game will require CD 1 to be in the drive for copy egest.
The plot shares some similarities to events in the Book of The Watchers (from the Book of Enoch, an apocryphal Jewish writing). In Baldur's Gate, an unearthly being came to the earthly realm and copulated with mortal females. The children of these unions have unusual and advanced traits and eventual fight with and kill each other. In the book of the watchers, unearthly beings came to the earth and copulated with mortal females. The children of these unions are giants and eventually fight with and kill each other.
[27]***The sequel of Castlevania made a similar change in style as the Zelda-sequel. Konami added RPG-elements, puzzles and left the strict linear path. Technically the game is excellent with great graphics and music and atmospheric surroundings. However the game also has some very strange game play elements. There are not enough useful hints for some puzzles and I felt that without a walkthrough you would feel a bit lost. It is actually the same kind of problem that I had with the Zelda-sequel. The cartridge version was released only in the US/EU a good year after the original Japanese Famicom Disk System version.***In this one-player adventure, you'll take on the role of Simon Belmont once again and duel to the death with Count Dracula. Grab your legendary whip, Vampire Killer, and roam freely through Transylvania on a quest to find the count's missing body parts-these are the key to breaking an evil curse. This quest won't be easy, though, for you must battle hideous fiends who stalk the land. In addition to the intense action and tight control the Castlevania series is known for, this sequel also introduced several unique game-play elements into the fold. Build experience the longer you play, buy weapons and items from merchants, or talk with villagers to get clues (some of which are false). Watch as day turns to night and then back again. Take a deep breath, steady your nerves, and help Simon end his curse and defeat the count once and for all.***Outstanding twist of Castlevania to a RPG (AKA the Dark Side)... Best game in the series until Symphony of the Night came out and kicked everything's arse. Better have a lot of patience, though.***A different style of Castlevania--an actual QUEST instead of normal walk through castle, kill bad guys. Some great tunes, too. [27]***Trevor Belmont, the origin of the famed Belmont vampire hunters, must destroy Count Dracula's reign of darkness over Europe. And so it begins the greatest Castlevania ever.
Dive into the quest: rescue pirates, mages and even vampires; and choose your path through a maze of incredible levels--broken bridges, haunted ships, swamps, towers, and even a Sunken City. Finally, find your way to Castlevania and a battle with the Count, and earn a place in the history of this great video game franchise.

Only the Japanese cartridge contained the VRC6 chip which improves the sound quality of the game.
[Count Dracula]***The best game for the old NES, period. Huge levels, multiple characters and extra paths make this one of the most innovative Castlevanias to ever hit the shelves. Hands down a Castlevania favorite.

Final Fantasy  Square1987
[30]***
[100]***The world is out of balance; the elements are in revolt. Four young heroes, each with a darkened orb, must restore order to this chaotic world. Swords and sorcery will aid them on their quest; on this final fantasy.***Considering this game was released before Dragon Quest 3, I might say this was the best console RPG on the market at its time, with the exception of Phantasy Star perhaps. Graphics and music were very good, you could choose between plenty of character classes and the game told a good story. Today the random encounter rate with all those monster fights might seem too high, but this was a normal thing with early RPG's.***Published in Brazil, catalog number "NES-FF-BZL" is unconfirmed.

Trivia:
In the original Japanese version, Link's grave could be found. Nintendo published both Dragon Warrior and its rival [, this game Final Fantasy] in the USA. They changed a grave to Erdrick's, a hero from the Dragon Warrior game. Later editions for other systems restored Link's grave.***The NES game that started it all. Although heavily hyped by Nintendo at the time of its release, nobody could ever have predicted the soaring heights the series would eventually reach in the minds and hearts of gamers. This game probably did more to advance the cause of console RPGs than perhaps any other - which is surprising in retrospect, as the first FF is a stunningly average game. It has virtually none of the depth or character development that later games - including the two other Japanese-only Famicom/NES releases - would later make the hallmark of the FF name. The combat system is nice, but there's better out there for the NES. Plus, it gets annoying after a while, since you're having encounters at just about every step, especially in the later dungeons. All in all, look at the first Final Fantasy as the grade-schooler's notebook sketchings that eventually lead her to become a great artist.

Relesed December 18, 1987 by Square in Japan and 1989 by Nintendo in the US.***Yeah sure, it looks like crap by today's standards, the story is almost non-existant, there is zero character development, the music is... well... it's an NES for god's sake! But this was my first Japanese RPG (you have no idea how long I had to save my allowance for this) and nothing you say can make me hate it. NOTHING!

There is a really good Final Fantasy One hack called Final Fantasy ++ and its sequel Final Fantasy ++ World of Chaos. If you're a fan of the game, it's definately worth checking out.

It features:

* Redone graphics. (Mostly ripped from later games in the series.)
* Redone enemies. (Many are new; some are returning enemies with new properties.)
* Redone magic spells. (Magic is now divided into White, Black, and Time Magic.)
* Redone weapons and armor. (Some armors now increase evasion rather than lowering it!)
* Redone maps. (Most are similar to the original game’s; some are totally new.)
* Redone character class system. (See Read Me.txt for details.)
* Two new pieces of music. (Adapted from Final Fantasy 4.)
* Some other relatively minor stuff.

However, if you are up for a real challenge (or have a good method to cheat at hand), the game might become enjoyable, because it features great graphics and music for an early NES game and is an all in all very faithful arcade conversion regarding the limited capabilities of the Famicom/NES.***Ghosts'n Goblins was a popular arcade game before it made the leap to the NES in 1986. Like later games in the series, Ghosts'n Goblins presents quite a challenge to players brave enough to take on the role of Arthur and delve into the realm of demons and monsters to rescue the kidnapped princess. Choose your weapons wisely and take advantage of their strengths to deal with the situation at hand. Pass through the six gates that stand between you and Astaroth, and teach him a lesson in chivalry he'll never forget. Demonstrating a high level of technical prowess for a game of its era, Ghosts'n Goblins presents a unique and unforgettable universe. The stage for adventure is set. Are you up to the test?

Gothic 2: The Night of the Raven  JoWooD Productions (Piranha Bytes)2003"When you're in need of something and don't know where to find it, go to Khorinis. There you can surely buy it." -- Saying (author unknown) The mine valley of Khorinis. The glorious days of the once productive mines in this small seaside region were long over. Surrounded by the impenetrable magical barrier, the slaves eked out their miserable existence in this apparently natural prison.
One brave man managed to burst the bonds of imprisonment. Following his own call to freedom, he ventured deep into the subterranean temples. Willing to do whatever was necessary, he went out to banish Evil and destroy the magical barrier forever. Spurred by the hatred of men long-suppressed, the prisoners streamed trough the only pass to freedom.
No one in Khorinis had been prepared for this. Too long had they lived under the deceptive notion of security granted by the apparently indestructible magical dome. The small militia garrison could not put up enough forces against the onrush. After numerous bloody clashes, many captives escaped and found safety in the woods or rugged mountains of the surrounding countryside.
The steadily escalating number of raids in the vicinity of the town wall and the bandits' ever-increasing boldness seemed to paralyze the whole town. Angered by the militia's inability to protect their farms, some of the farmers formed an alliance with the refugees, no longer willing to pay allegiance to the king.
Khorinis is facing an uncertain future. Due to the farmers' decreasing production, more and more of the food deliveries do not take place, and the stocks diminish continuously. The militia's might ends at the town gate. Outside the town wall, nobody is safe from the bandits' armed raids. There is war in Khorinis. A civil war.
But there is something else that could not be foreseen. Evil is not dead, rearing its ugly head again. But this time it is set on delivering the deathblow to humanity, and no one can stop it.
No one?***Adds one more area to the game as well as re-balances the gameplay otherwise. Pretty much like a huge patch.***English version was released as part of the Gothic 2 Gold combined re-release (2005-11-29), never sold in English separately.

[70]***When Hydlide was released in 1989 in the US it surely had a big problem. Everybody expected another game like Zelda, but Hydlide's game design was already very old, considering the Japanese Famicom version was out three years earlier and even that was just a slightly modified port of the original Japanese homecomputer version from 1984. So what qualified Hydlide to be recognized by many as one of the worst Action/RPG ever? The graphics are not well done, but one could argue that its still an improvement over the original homecomputer version. The music is very repetitive. And I mean very very repetitive. After spending lots of dumb leveling up time (another negative point of the game) the music makes you go mad. Well, at least you can turn it off. Besides the leveling up there is not much to do except searching treasure chests which are hidden all over the 25-screen "small" world and in some of the mini-dungeons. You have to rescue some fairies, beat a dragon and finally the end boss. Problem is, there are no NPCs which give you clues about what you actually have to do or where to search. So the game can become very frustrating if you don't have a walkthrough. And if you have one you will instantly see how small the game actually is.

Mappy-Land  Taxan;Namco (Tose)1986
[70]***I have not seen a package with the UPC 6-30539-04549-6 on it. But plenty of people are selling the title using this UPC. UPC 0-40886-62779-3 is visually verified as being on the packages I've seen.***Mappy-Land is a Famicom only sequel of Namco's arcade hit [game=#121]Mappy[/game]. Namco left the main elements in place, namely platforms that can be reached via trampolines and you having to collect certain things in each level while being followed by nasty cats. The game is colorful and cartoony looking. The levels are very varied and sometimes contain sub-levels where you have to collect an extra item which helps you to leave the main level. Controls are also OK. The first levels are easy enough, but in later levels when the cats are actually running faster than you the game becomes much more difficult. A good sequel to a cute arcade classic.

Pinball Quest  Jaleco (Tose)1989Don't let the name fool you - Pinball Quest is much more than video pinball. In fact, it's the first-ever multi-screen fantasy in a pinball format! Every move you make tells a story; every shot takes you another step closer in your quest to rescue the captive princess of the castle. Along the way you'll meet ghosts, goblins, witches and demons, in an endless labyrinth of treacherous passages and deadly doorways. It takes a fearless heart and a fast mind to conquer Pinball Quest. It also takes the skills of a true pinball wizard... which you can hone on the three other video pinball games included on this cartridge! So before you pour any more money into your NES library, get the one title that's a library all by itself! No matter how hard you try, you can't get enough of Pinball Quest! NESlabelimagesubject
