Upon death, the player is restored exactly where they died or within viewing distance of it.

A new plane or vehicle may quickly appear from outside of the view area which the player takes control of and continues where they left off with no penalty besides the loss of single life. Commonly this is accompanied by short-lived invulnerability power-up.

There are various ways to retcon this as non-gamelike feature:
* emergency teleport, same protagonist takes control of the next free craft
* the person who died wasn't the protagonist after all, this one is (or maybe not, if they die again)
* there is no protagonist, these are automated/remote controlled drones
and so forth...
