First of all the strange perspective with running to the side, "up" and "down" into new corridors, enemies that are too late to see and the maze design lead to instant frustration. And last but not least there are security doors with a code you have to decrypt, which takes a long long time just sitting there and waiting for the hacking software to try each and every possible combination until the door opens up eventually. Maybe thats why Epyx build in three mini-games on the door terminals to keep the player busy during the waiting time.

[27]***A Link to the Past (LTP throughout) was a ground-breaking game for the Zelda series. Besides being the first Zelda for the SNES, it was the first to have a semi fleshed-out plot. By semi fleshed-out, I mean something more than collect crystals and kill Ganon. Instead, it had a retrieve 3 pendants, collect the 'Master Sword,' kill Agahnim, _then_ collect crystals and [spoiler]kill Ganon (revealed to be Agahnim's alter-ego).[/spoiler]
Despite my sarcasm, I actually enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) this game having beaten it at least 15 times and I still keep coming back for more. The wonderfully engaging plot (mentioned above) actually takes place *before* the first 2 Zeldas, and so is technically a prequel. The game-play departs from the Zelda 2 RPG style, and returns to it's roots as a top-view adventure game with RPG elements. Unlike the first Zelda, communication plays a fairly important role in this installment. There are friendly, non-cavedwelling NPC's that you can, indeed are required, to get information from. Some play an important role, some are there just to annoy the living shnike out of you. Fighting is still basicly the same as in the original, as is the heart and money system. However, the overworld/dungeon system has changed drastically with the addition of an in-game map that actually shows important locations. i.e. Where you are, where you need to go, and enough detail to make getting there possible.***The Zelda Link to the Past [[link:http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/170/ Master Quest]] hack has brand new dungeons, overworlds, music, etc.

The combat system was even more balanced than in V or VI, while the story is so huge as to draw you in and flash through the amazing 30 hours of gameplay. Oh and the translation is no worse than most other Japanese RPGs, the PC version tidied this up a bit I think. Plus Sephiroth's sword is kick-butt.***Witness the birth of the 3D RPG. And updated to run on modern Windows OS.***Supposedly, this is not a code port. None of the original source code was used by the outside team from Hawaii that brought this game to Windows. When FF7 for PlayStation was completed, the entire team was reassigned or fired and their unique hardware was sold or dismantled. The source code was unique to the development hardware. Without the specialized hardware, the source code was not compileble or even modifiable in any useful way. Square had neither the people nor the code to do a port. All the new team had was the data specific to the PSX (barely useful) and unuseable source code. Eventually the team discovered that what they had been given was not even from the final PSX version, it was roughly rendered temporary data and pre-alpha code that had never actual been successfully compiled. And to top it off, no one on this new team had every worked on a game before. All this is known because all of the debug information (including rants and raves by the team) were unintentionally left in the executable.***First PC conversion of a Final Fantasy game that finally brought the bizarre numbering system in line in both Japan and Europe/USA.

PC RPGs were never the same again, the gigantic storyline and superb combat translated into the keyboard PC layout with surprising success.

This is a remake of the original Legend of Zelda. The graphic overhaul is immediately apparent but there are a few other subtle changes. Most changes make the game not necessarily easier, just a bit less frustrating. Save or Continue, and Link's hearts remain unchanged or filled to three if they were below that. Boss fireballs not deflectable and Stone Statue fireballs deflectable looked identical in the original, now players can see the difference. Dungeon rooms are rarely so square as they were. Blocks are often replaced by walls where appropriate. And rooms that used to be a pattern of blocks are not a more organically shaped area with various obstacles to maneuver around. The new room shapes and smoothed out terrain means there are less places that look like bombable walls, so bombable walls are easier to find. Most notable it the changes in dungeon layout, where are not so much changing the rooms as it is replacing the room-to-room tunnels with a simple stairway (instant arrival at the other end). New pathways have been added. And dead ends and pointless treks into obscure corners of the dungeons are virtually eliminated by adding something useful or even necessary to them. A good example of this is in the first dungeon. In the original, Link can go left and get a key by defeating enemies. Or, Link can go right and get a key by defeating enemies. Or, both, if the player choses not to or does not knows where bomb to avoid using keys. In this remake, Link can only go left. When enemies are defeated, the staircase must be opened and this leads to the right room where the enemies must be defeated to open the exit back to the entry room. Another trick is make dead-end paths useful by having pots in the rooms. This way, players can now grind for hearts and money on a path that was just a waste of time in the original. Also there's more completely optional secrets to discover. Certain room based puzzles in the dungeons have completely new solutions. Player will find themselves using items in ways they are used in other Zelda games and in unique ways. These are usually easy and nearly intuitive. Along the lines of encountering something new in a room in a dungeon on the way to the boss; using the item collected in the same dungeon in a on the new thing to solve the puzzle. These are not just an added step, these teach the player. These new tricks learned in the dungeon can be used elsewhere to find a whole new set of secrets that have been added to the game. Also, use old tricks in new places to find the some of new secrets. This aptly named 1st quest is but only the 1st, no 2nd quest follows on defeating Ganon (to the best of my knowledge).

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter  Capcom;CE Europe (Capcom)2002The story and location (the world) are unrelated to earlier BoF games, gameplay also was revised almost completely. Besides using some very recognizable parts of the series (Ryu, Nina, transformation into a "dragon", etc.), the reason for labeling this game under BoF is a marketing mystery. If they had bothered to completely cut ties with BoF, the experimental nature of the game would've likely been received much better instead of being targeted by BoF fans with scorn. The greatest flaw of the game to me is the complete lack of voice overs which is somewhat unusual for games this "new".***[b]difficulty-single[/b] - despite this, every time your whole party dies the game gets easier as current party XP and gained skills are transferred back to the point when you made the save. This can be omitted, though.
[b]midas' touch[/b] - Ryu's dash and D-dive abilities.

[b]bioroids[/b] - the genics.
[b]pigmen[/b] - duke genics
[b]minotaurs[/b] - deathcow genics
[b]blobs[/b] - the various goo creatures
[b]insectoids[/b] - there's a variety, though most commonly you see the ant-like midget humanoids who work in the fairy colony.

[b]performance issues[/b] - with 3+ enemies and placing one or more magical wards (especially electrical) the camera movement and movement circle appearance becomes stuttery.
