NeoColonialism | Subaltern Games | 2013 | This game is very much like the board game risk. But rather than players commanding military conquests, players are bankers using neocolonial tactics to buy and sell votes for profit. After 12 turns, the player that has managed to deposit the most funds in their swiss bank account is the winner. It is a humorless and pointed satire of real world global 'banker'. It names well known figures both past and present such as J.P. Morgan, Ronald Reagan, Alan Greenspan, Donald Trump, and many more. Players are actually named after such people. The term "Neocolonialism" is the idea of using capitalism, business globalization, and cultural imperialism to influence a country without using (or necessarily having) direct military or political control. It is notably thought of as a Marxist theory despite the term being coined after the death of Karl Marx.***Neocolonialism Ruin Everything Buy votes. Extract wealth. Exploit the working class. Negotiate. Backstab. Manipulate parliaments. Manipulate the International Monetary Fund. Manipulate the world. Papo & Yo | Minority Media | 2014 | Papo and Yo stars Quico, a young boy with an abusive, alcoholic father who has fled into a Brazilian urban slum where magical physics can be layered upon the physics of the real world. By passing through chalk drawn doors, Quico gains access to the magical layer. Passing back through a door can avoid threats and obstacles unique to the magical layer. For instance, manipulating a stack of cardboard boxes moves nearby large favela dwellings. This one mechanic alone is important commentary. Favela dwellings are sometimes regarded as a ramshackle collection of scrap plywood, corrugated metal, plastic sheets, and of course cardboard boxes. In reality they are thoughtfully designed, very sturdy reinforced steel, brick, concrete, tile roofed bunkers that are likely tougher than the average home in so called "developed countries". Favela dwellings can be given legs to walk around with. Staircases can be pulled out of walls with magical thread. Residents of the magical layer are not necessarily welcoming. One particularly important character is a giant monster Quico comes to love. A friendly and helpful father figure at times. But he has an addiction to poisonous frogs. When under their influence, or suffering withdrawal from them, this monster is an immediate and overwhelming threat to all surrounding life and property. The player will be directing Quico not just through puzzles, but in complex social interactions. I don't want to give too much away, but I'll just say this is not Disneyesque magic world. In this world, magic offers no salvation, it is subject to the whims and abuse of realistic human darkness. Outside of the magical layer, real life is likewise presented realistically harsh. | Linux | labelminimizesubject |

Pitfall! | Activision;CCE;Ariola (Activision) | 1982 | ***David Crane originally designed the game with an entirely mortal Harry (1 death ends the game). Sadly, two weeks before production, he made the game easier by giving Harry multiple lives. Still, this is one of the most challenging games for the 2600, very few gamers have gotten all 32 treasures in the alloted 20 minutes. The world record for the fastest time is 18:52. (1:06 left on the clock). The best player in the world can only achieve a time that is 5.66% faster than required. A 'Perfect Game' can be achieved by collecting all 32 treasures and never dying, never falling and never being damaged by a hostile object. The resulting score will be 114,000. There are 256 screens that connect end to end (screen 1 connects to screen 256). The underground (tunnels) skip around the ring of screens in a different order than the overworld. You can go left or right on any screen that doesn't have a brick wall in the way. The general consensus is that it is easier to go left from the starting screen because of the direction logs travel and dying starts you on the left side of the screen. However, to take the most efficient path to get all the treasures in time, start by going right. Also, unless you have a photographic memory, make a map. There are many hacks available for download. Here is a few of the notable ones. Pitfall Trainer: Timer removed & INF Lives, usefully cheat for cartography and practice. Jungle Jane: A faster, meaner, better sounding, more colorful version with a female star. Enhanced Pitfall +: 3 levels of difficulty, including 'Practice'. Scorpions climb ladders and travel screen to screen. There are additional treasures and enemies. Underground tunnels are smaller. Bottomless Pitfall: Graphically enhanced. Can't go left from the start. Logs roll both ways. You restart a screen (after dying) from the side you entered. 10 hour clock and unlimited treasures, so a maximum scores are much more varied. Harry has hit points. The rattlesnakes are not out of place in this game's setting, they are crotalus durissus, found in most countries in South America. [Zerothis]***This is the game that makes a 2600 worth owning. Pitfall is an adventure game classic. Gameplay is simple yet challenging, repetitive yet enduring. In an age of multi-level 3D gaming worlds, Pitfall has yet to be equaled. | Atari 2600 | labelimagesubject |
