Player is shown a simulated view of not being able to read a language (especially their primary language) because the protagonist(s) can't read it.

Usually, consistent gibberish, as in "stop" is always shown as "$^*#" while "stay" is always shown as "&#@^". Random gibberish is not really realistic but some games do this. Note that an alphabet substitution code might not be suitable since the player could figure it out but the protagonist might lack such skill. Word substitution is a better simulation. However, combining an alphabet substitution with a different language is quite effective (is the player does not know the other language) at fully simulating illiteracy.
