Black Crypt Electronic Arts (Raven Software)1992Black Crypt was the first game title produced by Raven Software. Raven founders Brian and Steve Raffel had an idea for a Role Playing Game in the late 80's and set out to make it a reality. By April 1990, the brothers had brought two programmers aboard to assist them in the development of the game. The four produced a demo of Black Crypt and sent it out to several publishing companies. Electronic Arts (EA) saw the demo and agreed to publish the game in 1990. Black Crypt was released on March 20th, 1992.

Black Crypt was originally designed to run on a Commodore Amiga with 1 MB of RAM. The graphic mode used was called Extra Half-Bright, which allowed for a user-defined palette of 32 colors (out of 4096 color choices). The mode then provided an additional 32 colors, which were half the brightness of the chosen colors. 'Copper' effects were used to do special effects, such as the teleport or water ripples. Black Crypt supported 4 channels of sound and was "hard drive installable." It was distributed on three 880k disks.

In 1998, Raven Software programmer Rick Johnson released the first two levels of Black Crypt for the PC as Freeware.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare  Activision (Sledgehammer Games;Raven Software)2014In short: great graphics in a bland FPS format.

Vanilla modern CoD (perks + red screen) with nothing new to offer, except for dashing/double jumping and some techie weapons and abilities (that drain a power bar from their use), and a "grenade launcher" that is only a visual quirk to the average classic grenade. Anyways, if you go for jumps and platforming try Titanfall (you can try it for free on Origin with Game Time, and its better in level design and vertical combat), and if you like futuristic gadgets and customization try Ghost Recon Phantoms (F2P crafted for real multiclass playing and more interesting and versatile special skills)
At least displays many different multiplayer modes.

Also includes two co-op modes:
*Exo Defense: a co-op PvE mode, where the players fight waves of soldiers.
*Exo Zombies: a "zombie mode", featuring a mixture between survival and area defense in the way that started Call of Duty: World at War.

CyClones SSI (Raven Software)1994Raven Software expanded its development team in 1993 and began producing CyClones in February of 1994. Partnered with Strategic Simulations Inc. (SSI), the CyClones team set out to make a futuristic shooter based on Raven's first in-house game technology...the STEAM engine.

The name CyClones referred to Cybernetic Clones, the minions of aliens who had ravaged and devastated the earth. The player was cast as the cybernetic warrior Havoc who, in the course of his battle against the aliens, discovers that he himself is one of these monstrosities, reprogrammed by his masters to do their bidding.

The new engine technology for CyClones allowed the designers to utilize moving platforms, catwalks, sloped areas, and transparent textures. CyClones also introduced a unique mouse control system, where movement could be handled independently of aiming, and any area could be targeted on screen. This control scheme was the precursor to the "mouse look" controls that are still the preferred method of control in first person shooter games today.
[Raven]***CyClones was the first game on DOS/Win32 that implemented crude mouse-look, but was preceded by Marathon (on Mac) which had it before it. Quake was the one to popularize mouse-look two years later.

As the lone magical warrior to stand against the hordes of the Serpent Rider, you battle your way through monsters, undead, demons and the evil disciples to finally give D'sparil a final beating. However, if you're just looking for a plain shooter of around the same era, you're better off with Doom.***Episodes:

* The Dome of D'sparil
* The Ossuary
* The Stagnant Demesne

The shareware version only had three episodes compared to the retail release's five, but a later free patch updated the shareware version to have the two additional episodes.***Raven Software teamed up with Id Software for the second time in its creation of the hit fantasy action game Heretic. Based on a modified DooM engine, Heretic pioneered a revolutionary new inventory system for character item use that has become commonplace in the FPS genre. Id Software published the game under its flag and it was distributed by GT Interactive.

Players took the role of Corvus, an Elven hero whose race was nearly eliminated by a horde of evil monsters from another dimension. The first episode of Heretic was released as Shareware as a precursor to the full version of the game, Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders.

Heretic won several awards for excellence, appeared in such notable publications as USA Today and Playboy, and opened many new doors in the computer gaming software industry for Raven Software and its team of developers. Heretic was Raven Software's most popular, highest acclaimed, biggest selling game to that point.
[Raven]***More than just another Doom clone, Heretic lets you battle it out as Corvus against the first of the serpent riders. New weapons, the ability to jump and fly, water that moves your char around etc. make this game stand apart from others of it's kind. Along with an inventory system, and the Tomb of Power, which gives all your weapons an added boost, perfect for when you're opponents are just a little better equiped than you.

Heretics game-engine is the same as in "Doom" and "Doom 2". Gameplay is very similar with some extra-features and a fantasy-setting. In 1996 GT Interactive re-released the game as "Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders", which features 2 more episodes.

Heretic II  Activision (Raven Software)1998Un auténtico juegazo de acción, con un inventario de armas y hechizos de lo más pintoresco y un grandísimo multijugador.

7 de 10***Corvus finally returns home from where ever D'sparil had sent him with his dying curse, only to find his people ravaged by madness and disease.***Latest version: 1.06 Enhancement Pack (as of ?)***During the development of Portal of Praevus, Raven Software worked feverishly to lay the groundwork for yet another revolutionary action game: Heretic II. Based on Id Software's Quake II engine, Heretic II successfully blended first-person shooter action with a third-person camera to create an entirely new game genre.

This new perspective on the Heretic/HeXen universe was the biggest critical success in Raven Software's storied history. With dozens of awards and numerous accolades, Heretic II showed the world that third-person action games could be fun and intuitive, while it solidified Raven's reputation as one of the industry's top game developers.

The game was published by Activision Inc. and released to the public in 1998. Heretic II was one of the last 3-D action games to ship with fully playable co-operative gameplay.

Heretic II has since inspired a new generation of third-person action game development...a testament to the groundbreaking impact of the title.
[Raven]***Raven Software once again showes that they know how to make a game with Heretic II. It takes place along the lines of the original Heretic (Doom engine). You finally make it home after your odreal with the first of three serpent riders (The second and third are in the Hexen series), only to find it ravaged by a plague. As you go dig deeper into finding a cure, you yourself become infected, and find out most of the world is as well. This game features the Quake 2 engine, and has amazing graphics (espically for weapon and spell effects). However, Raven took a challenge with a 3rd person only point of view, which some do not like. Personally, I think this is a great game.

But since each character has only 4 weapons total, including the starting weapon, this isn't such a big thing but does prove additional challenge early on. There are some differences in encountered enemies between the characters, too (or they're randomized, but I haven't verified that). There are only two types of "ammo" (mana, really), where the second weapon consumes blue, third weapon green, and fourth weapon both. Unlike some other games of the time, magic was not simply dispensed from some magical weapons, but the character actually seemed to have proficiency in magical arts, as witnessed by the mage classes use of lightning and ice and cleric's use of fire. However, the game design so expanded beyond the original game that this proposed the expansion of the Heretic universe took on a bold new identity of its own...HeXen: Beyond Heretic.

HeXen was developed over a period of 8 months, published by Id Software and distributed by GT Interactive in 1995. The game introduced the 3-D gaming world to the "hub system" of level progression, rotating polygonal brushes and multiple character classes that were available in both single player and multiplayer. All of this combined to help HeXen raise the bar for the first-person shooter genre. HeXen pushed Id Software's DooM engine to its absolute limits and surpassed Heretic as Raven Software's most popular, highly acclaimed title.

The success of HeXen prompted a mission pack, Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, and several ports to home console gaming systems including the Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64 and the Sony PlayStation. HeXen also became the first Raven Software game made available for the Macintosh.

Every part of this colossal battle between horrific creatures is waged with one of the 12 death dealing weapons, either alone or in 'co-operative' or 'Deathmatch' networked play. Pretenders to the throne beware: - id Software and Raven have joined forces again to create this masterpiece of the 3D dynasty.
[Box blurb]***While you were battling the evil forces of D'Sparil, the other Serpent Riders were busy sowing the seeds of destruction in other dimensions. One such dimension is the decaying world where Hexen takes place. A world littered with the mangled corpses of nonbelievers and inhabited by the undead followers that executed them. Only three humans - a warrior, a mage and a cleric - have escaped the leaders' vicious spell. Now these brave souls have sworn to crush the evil regime that threatens to destroy the world forever. Separated upon entering the mystical portal, the three are forced to attempt on their own what they had hoped to do together: find Korax's stronghold, destroy him and restore order in the physical world.
[id Software]***A sort of sequel of Heretic, Hexen takes you to a new world to take the place of one of three heroes (A Fighter, a Cleric and a Mage) to stop the second of the Serpent Riders. The use of a "hub" system to travel back and forth through the levels is a very innovative idea. This is one of my all time favorite games, however some are turned away by the running around, collecting of puzzle pieces.

Hexen II - Mission Pack: Portal of Praevus  Activision (Raven Software)1998HeXen II: Portal of Praevus began production in late 1997, following the successful launch of the original game. The team decided to make the expansion much more than a pack of new levels for HeXen II. The goal was to make Portal of Praevus as close to an entirely new game as possible for buyers of the original HeXen II. To do this, the team made two new hubs, 15 new single player levels, three new enemies and added another character class...the Demoness.

HeXen II owners could play through Portal of Praevus as the former minion of Eidolon or as any of the original four characters. HeXen II: Portal of Praevus merged seamlessly with the Hexen II world and offered a wealth of new options and opportunities for mayhem in both single player and multiplayer gaming.

Hailed as one of the best mission packs ever, HeXen II: Portal of Praevus helped solidify Raven Software's ongoing relationship with Activision Inc, who published the game in 1998.
[Raven]***This mission pack for Hexen 2 takes place after the fall fo the last Serpent Rider. A new threat has taken the souls of the three serpent riders and is using their power. This game keeps with the detail of the original, plus adds a fith character class to play, a demoness. If you enjoied Hexen II, I highly reccoment getting this mission pack to continue the fun.

Powered by the Quake engine, HeXen II was developed from 1996 to 1997 on a brutal production schedule, published by Id Software and distributed by Activision Inc.

One of the most highly anticipated releases of 1997, HeXen II was the first game from an outside developer to ship with Quake engine technology. The game featured four single player hubs and deathmatch capabilities for 16 players while simultaneously offering four character classes, each with four weapons with dual fire modes for a total of 32 unique weapon effects. In addition, HeXen II was the first 3-D shooter to feature transparent water effects in both hardware and software rendering modes and one of the only fully 3-D games to feature single player cooperative gameplay.

HeXen II was a smash hit for Raven Software and was revered by many as one of the most artistically beautiful computer games ever made.
[Raven]***this is the only game aside from Quake that I know of that uses Quake 1's engine. It is a very worthy sequil of the original Hexen. This one takes you to yet another world to battle the third and final Serpent Rider as one of four heros (Paladin, Crusader, Assassin or Necromancer). Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast  LucasArts (Raven Software)2002The game has an extra stage for the demo, that is kind of well made and replayable (outstanding in demo standards)***Este es uno de esos juegos que tratas de evaluar casi negativamente para intentar compensar el subidón de nostalgia.

Necrodome Mindscape (Raven Software)1996Necrodome puts players into a heavily armored vehicle, fighting in tournaments in cities across a near-future United States. Originally slated to be a sequel to CyClones, Necrodome took on new life as a wholly original game concept with a brand new in-house game engine capable of handling multiple wall angles, slopes, bridges and buildings with multiple floors.

Necrodome pioneered a unique cooperative multiplayer experience that allowed players to work together in combat with one player serving as the driver while the other fired the vehicle's weapons from the turret. This type of gameplay, perhaps the first truly cooperative game mode in an action game, has never been replicated.

Originally slated as a DOS title, Necrodome paved the way for Raven Software's first foray into the world of Windows game development. It also gave our developers the opportunity to learn and continue molding its in-house technology efforts and experience with 3D engines and networking for Raven Software's next 3D technology, the Vampire engine, used in MageSlayer and Take No Prisoners.

Necrodome was released on the PC in October of 1996 by Mindscape, the owners of SSI.
