[anonymous]***I'll admit, I was wowed by the graphics, sound and speed of this game when I first seen it. The fast paced music matches Sonic's speediness well (and is an amazing accomplishment since the music itself is only 8-bit and not 16-bit). The sound effects don't sound nearly as artificially generated as the one's on 8-bit systems. So far so good. But then story falls short, presented as one small paragraph in the game manual. The levels have lots of rings to collect and having at least one acts as a hit point so enemies, flames and spikes don't instantly kill Sonic. Sonic needs to be holding a minimum number of rings to access the special stages at the end of each level so he can grab the Chaos Emeralds. No where in the manual does it say what this minimum number is, nor what use the Chaos Emeralds have. Though it does say Sonic must prevent Dr. Robotnic from obtaining them. In fact the manual seems to have been written by someone unfamiliar with the game. It says to look for "secret rooms" when there is nothing that really resembles "rooms" in the game. There are areas difficult to see or access and
breakable walls that look like normal walls. The manual does not explain or even hint at breakable walls.
The manual says the special zones are traps! (Traps where Sonic cannot lose a life. Traps without time penalties. Traps full of all sorts of great bonuses)! There is no AI to the enemies, they all follow a set pattern and most of them are very simple. The Atari 2600 has better controls, seriously. When I press down on the Atari joystick, my character always take the proper action. But in Sonic, pressing down often causes Sonic to move left or right instead of crouching while standing still, or rolling into a ball when speeding. Actually, I prefer to use an Atari joystick to play Sonic, its compatible with the Genesis game port, and it helps. Sonic only needs one button during play anyhow. The control scheme doesn't not have a 0 learning curve becuse it takes a moment to learn that all three buttons preform the exact same jump. When in a level (an "Act"), Sonic has access to the whole level being able to go forward or backward with only certain spots being difficult to access once passed. This is a bit unusual for platform games at the time. Sonic's main competition, Super Mario Bros, didn't allow this. Like SMB, Sonic cannot go to a previous level. Unlike SMB, there are no shortcuts to higher levels. Sonic is very linear but allows some freedom to explore every nook and cranny of each individual level. There are multiple checkpoints in each level. Without activating a checkpoint, Sonic will restart the level when killed. Otherwise he will start at the last checkpoint he touched. Sonic has lives, and can earn extra lives. There is no way to save progress if the Genesis is switched off. Sonic has an absolute minimum playtime of just under 18 minutes, and a maximum of about 3 hours. This maximum is because there is a time limit on each level. The challenge comes not from completing the game, which is fairly easy, but from winning against Dr Robotnic. Winning the game is somewhat satisfying. The way to win the game is strongly suggested by the ending you get when you don't win and its a spoiler for me to say how.
The story demands that Sonic stop Dr Robotnic before he collects the Chaos Emeralds. Yet it is possible to 'beat' the game without collecting them. In this case, the player actually loses (according to the story), because Dr. Robotnic is seen juggling the Chaos Emeralds and will proceed with his evil plans. Collecting 6 chaos emeralds before beating the game is required to "win".
This element of beating the game with or without winning kinda rescues the story a bit, but doesn't save it. Along the way, Sonic does not gain any permanent abilities nor is the story advanced during the game. Sonic 1 is simple, this has a certain appeal I suppose. But it doesn't lend well to social interaction revolving around the game. There are some hidden things that can be shared with other players. There are subtle details in the character's animations and extras in the graphics like shadows. But very little gameplay details. Piratically all the innovation in this game has to do with the sound and graphics, which were great improvements for games but not quite full innovations. They take good advantage of the Genesis hardware, which is the actual innovation. Sonic can be a bit destructive to his environment and the robots sent to attack him. On the other hand, he's destroying robots instead of actually killing as most platformer protagonists do. And he's simultaneously rescuing animals that are imprisoned in the robots. Their's no bad language, addictive substances, or sexual themes at all in the game. Later games, but not this one, added slot machine elements.

Bottom line:
Its not very good. Its all about the speed, graphics and sound. Sonic 1's SG&S were amazing at first, and it was a pioneer game for SG&S. But SG&S competition among game manufacturers would eventually devastate game quality as they were given top priority and all other aspects of the game, especially gameplay, became lesser priorities or even ignored. Playing Sonic 1 now just makes me sad. I do note however, that the later games in this series did improve tremendously.

Sqrxz -2010Initial release was for following platforms:
Windows, Amiga OS4, MorphOS, NetBSD (x86 & PPC) and Symbian OS (S60v3/S60v5 & UIQ3)
***Sqrxz requires fast reflexes and is a simply mindblasting Jump’n'Run puzzle game with high frustration factor originally made in 1996 by Marcus Vesterlund (Maze) and John Holmvall (Hojo) for DOS and Windows 9x.

Sqrxz (2010) is a remake of a game with the same name and has been created by Rodolphe Boixel (Thor), Shahzad Sahaib (Kojote), Simon Butler and Brendan Ratliff (Syphus). Minor support came from Marcus Vesterlund himself who also gave permission to redo his game. Denny Müller (Mulle) supported the team with a WordPress-Theme for the official page and Rabia Sahaib (Mahek) made three more levels.

A remake should be usually bearing improvements, so does Sqrxz 2010. Beside the "classic" graphic mode, there is a new mode with "deluxe" graphics. The main gameplay has modified in a way that you need to collect all items to open the door at the end of each level, which makes some levels harder than they actually already were. Extended "fun" is guarantueed with additional three levels, unseen before. Each level does have it’s own chiptune and adds up to the retro feeling. A Top 10 highscore table will hold all your records. For the ones who like hidden features, there is even a small easter egg!

Sqrxz uses code of the following Open-Source projects in an unmodified form: SDL, SDL_Mixer, libmodplug and zlib - you can get the source code of the mentioned libraries by visiting the respective homepage, as we do use the official standard versions. The use of those libraries is also promoted with a screen "ingame". If anyone wants to have the object files, feel free to ask.

Features:

* Amiga’ish feeling!
* 16 Levels including a "beginners" level
* 18 Chiptunes
* Classic AND new graphic mode
* Top 10 highscore

[33]***Super Mario Bros. is the pinnacle of pure, unblemished gaming. The 2D platformer, designed by Nintendo's legendary figurehead Shigeru Miyamoto, still remains in our minds the most intuitive and addictive entry in the genre. The title stars "Jump Man" himself, Mario, along with his brother Luigi, and takes players through more than 30 colorful levels of varied theme and design, all of them packed with cute, stylized enemies like the goombas and a wide array of platforms and obstacles. Super Mario Bros. is the first major showpiece for Nintendo's heightened quality of gaming: full of depth, layered with tight control and remarkably clever level creation that spills with secrets and extras.***One of the most important and best-selling games in history. This game was the #1 reason to buy a NES console in its early days. Perfect controls, nice graphics and sounds for its time. Varied levels with many secrets. Landing squarely on an enemies head to defeat them is the first and most common tactic in this game. It was available at the launch time of the NES in the USA (Famicom?). It stars Mario the plumber. he main plot includes rescuing the unfortunate Princess in distress, and saving her kingdom; which is threatened by Bowser. Successful completion of the game completes a story of deliverance. Other royal subjects can be rescued optionally. The common bricks in the game can be smashed directly or by hurdling enemies at them. Although a glitch, Mario or Luigi can preform wall jumps.

Super Mario Bros.  Nintendo1985Super Mario Bros. is a platform game developed and published in 1985 by Nintendo for the Famicom in Japan and for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in North America. It is the successor to the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros. and the first game in the Super Mario series. Following a US test market release for the NES, it was converted to international arcades on the Nintendo VS. System in early 1986. The NES version received a wide release in North America that year and in PAL regions in 1987.

Players control Mario, or his brother Luigi in the multiplayer mode, to explore the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Koopa (later named Bowser). They traverse side-scrolling stages while avoiding hazards such as enemies and pits with the aid of power-ups such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman.

The game was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka as "a grand culmination" of the Famicom team's three years of game mechanics and programming, drawing from their experiences working on Devil World and the side-scrollers Excitebike and Kung Fu to advance their previous work on platforming "athletic games" such as Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. The design of the first level, World 1-1, is a tutorial for platform gameplay.

Super Mario Bros. is frequently cited as one of the greatest video games of all time, and is particularly admired for its precise controls. It has been re-released on most Nintendo systems, and is one of the bestselling games of all time, with more than 58 million copies sold worldwide. It is credited alongside the NES as one of the key factors in reviving the video game industry after the 1983 crash, and helped popularize the side-scrolling platform game genre. Koji Kondo's soundtrack is one of the earliest and most popular in video games, making music a centerpiece of game design and has since been considered one of the best video game soundtracks of all time as a result. Mario has become prominent in popular culture, and Super Mario Bros. began a multimedia franchise including a long-running game series, an animated television series, a Japanese anime feature film, a live-action feature film and an animated feature film.***As with many of the Famicom Disk System launch titles, the Famicom Disk System version of Super Mario Bros. is exactly the same as the previously released cartridge version. A fantastic, huge and addicting platformer with excellent controls, as well as good graphics and music for its time. Some enhancements or extras for the FDS wouldn't have hurt though.

Super Mario Bros. 2  Nintendo1986The Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 is very similar to its predecessor. Besides some marginal graphical changes and the fact that Luigi controls a bit differently (higher jumps, but less control) there is nothing real new in this game. I guess the reason why it never made its way to the US or Europe (at least on the NES) is the overly high difficulty level which somehow reduced my interest from rescuing the princess from yet another castle.***Originally released in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2, this game has previously made only brief cameo appearances in the Western Hemisphere. Now available on the Virtual Console in all of its original splendor, Mario fans will appreciate the familiar look and feel of the game, while finding that its updated game play creates an entirely new challenge. No longer content just to wear different-colored overalls, Mario and Luigi also possess different skill sets: Mario can stop quicker, while Luigi can jump higher. In addition to the classic enemies already known to fans worldwide, there are also Poison Mushrooms, backward Warp Zones, and the occasional wind gust (which can help or hinder your progress) to take into account. And if that's somehow not enough, expert players can go looking for the game's secret worlds. So get ready to put your Mario skills to the ultimate test, and save the Princess again. Just don't be surprised if she's in another castle.***The REAL Super Mario 2. The American Super Mario 2 is known as Super Mario USA in Japan... don't ask why.

All this (and more) combines into one of gaming's most well-known and beloved titles—are you ready to experience gaming bliss?***For me, this was the game that started it all! It was the first NES game I ever beat (sorry, I was a little late with getting an NES), and it drew me back into the video game world that I had long since abandoned after years of lackluster Atari games.
Even when playing it today, I still think it is one of the greatest games of all time. SMB3 has a multitude of levels with varying, but always creative, obstacles, loads of secrets, special suits (like Tanooki and Hammer Bros.), lots of new enemies, and Kuribo's Shoe! Although much of the game is relatively easy, SMB3 does have its moments of difficulty, and World 8 is a real challenge!

Super Mario Bros. Special  Hudson Soft1986Super Mario Bros. Special was made by Hudson Soft in 1986 for the NEC-PC8801 and Sharp X1 series of Japanese PCs. SMB Special was the first Nintendo-licensed sequel to Super Mario Bros., released shortly before Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. Two years earlier, Hudson Soft had released a similar follow-up game for Mario Bros., entitled Mario Bros. Special.

While superficially very similar to the original Super Mario Bros., the game features original levels and lacks a screen-scrolling mechanism. Jumping and running physics also differ from the original, providing a more challenging experience than Super Mario Bros.. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that the level timer runs much faster than in the NES/Famicom game.

Due to the PC88's technology being slightly inferior to that of the NES/Famicom, the graphics and audio differ somewhat from the original NES game as well. However, they are closely emulated and does not include Luigi or a multiplayer mode.

The Sharp X1 version does contain partial scrolling and better graphics but gives Mario a slightly shorter jump.

Along the way you can collect mushrooms, flowers, and stars to power you up. Hop into one of Mario's new vehicles, the Marine Pop or the Sky Pop, and fire away at incoming enemies. You'll also have to battle four vicious bosses, including the Sphinx and a massive Easter Island statue, as you search for hidden secrets that hold tons of coins.***The first Super Mario game not produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, and it shows. The game is a bit different in feel from other games in the series. The enemies and stages are somewhat familiar, but also completely different from past experiences with Nintendo's favorite plumber. That being said, this also helps to distinguish it a bit. Side-scrolling shooter stages in both sea and air help to break up the gameplay and add something new. The graphics are primitive, but it's just as fun as you'd expect.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins  Nintendo1992Mario faces off against his evil rival Mario who has captured Mario land and turned it into his private playground in this classic adventure.

To toss Wario off his ill-gotten throne, Mario must search all-new worlds for the six golden coins that unlock the gate to Mario's castle. A mob of monsters, old and new, seek to stop him. Along the way, through 6 zones, Mario can nab Power Mushrooms, Super Stars and Fire Flowers for extra power. And if he eats the Magic Carrot, he'll turn into a high-flying hare!***Mario returns in a brand new Game Boy adventure! Bigger graphics, better sound, and more stages! Super Mario Land 2 also introduces Wario, a new villain for Mario to battle. The new "bunny ears" power-up can be obtained to allow Mario to jump for greater distance and float safely to the ground. Collect the six golden coins from the six different areas to gain entrance to Wario's (stolen) castle and take back what's yours!

[27]***During a vacation in Dinosaur Land, Princess Toadstool gets kidnapped and a spell is cast on the inhabitants of the island. When they stumble upon Yoshi, a young dinosaur, Mario and Luigi learn that Bowser is responsible for the terrible misdeeds. Now, all Yoshis are trapped in magical eggs that Bowser has hidden throughout seven castles. Many hidden paths aid Mario in making his way to Bowser's castle, completing 74 areas and finding all 96 exits. Discover items, including a feather that gives Mario a cape that allows him to fly, or a flower that shoots fireballs in layers upon layers of 2-D scrolling landscapes. Players can even ride Yoshi and swallow their enemies.***This is by far the best platform game ever created. Nothing ever came close to it, and is still greatly enjoyable.***A great, colorful game that vastly improved on the already popular Super Mario Bros. 3 and sold quite a number of Super NES bundles. With the addition of new moves like the spin jump, the new cape power-up (which takes the place of the raccoon tail from the previous game), and Yoshi, Mario's new dinosaur sidekick and transportation, there's plenty to explore here. The game world is vast and offers many hidden levels and multiple exits in most stages. This is Mario at the very top of his game.

[49]***Nintendo weren't happy with this game.
The Great Giana Sisters was created by Armin Gessert and had graphics produced by the future creator of the Turrican series, Manfred Trenz back in 1987. At the time, Super Mario Bros was at a all time high in the craze stakes on the NES console, and Armin created his own clone in great style.

A very cunning swap of ‘Great’ for ‘Super’, ‘Giana’ for ‘Mario’ and ‘Sisters’ for ‘Brothers’, proved too much for the legal eagles at Nintendo, whom, heavily protective of their much loved plumber, took legal action to prevent the sale of the C64 clone.

Nintendo were very slightly late in their prevention however, and the game managed to get on sale for a week, before being ripped from the shelves. Leaving a rare selection of copies to have got out into the real world. One such owned by myself thankfully (Cover scans coming soon), and by lucky others in the C64 community. A true rarity which countless C64 people will tell you when you mention Giana.
