1st Quest Revamp  author2002Collect useful items guarded by secret puzzles and enemies to gain access to 8 dungeons with more useful items guarded by bosses to gain access to the last dungeon to defeat Ganon and rescue Princess Zelda.

This is a remake of the original Legend of Zelda. The graphic overhaul is immediately apparent but there are a few other subtle changes. Most changes make the game not necessarily easier, just a bit less frustrating. Save or Continue, and Link's hearts remain unchanged or filled to three if they were below that. Boss fireballs not deflectable and Stone Statue fireballs deflectable looked identical in the original, now players can see the difference. Dungeon rooms are rarely so square as they were. Blocks are often replaced by walls where appropriate. And rooms that used to be a pattern of blocks are not a more organically shaped area with various obstacles to maneuver around. The new room shapes and smoothed out terrain means there are less places that look like bombable walls, so bombable walls are easier to find. Most notable it the changes in dungeon layout, where are not so much changing the rooms as it is replacing the room-to-room tunnels with a simple stairway (instant arrival at the other end). New pathways have been added. And dead ends and pointless treks into obscure corners of the dungeons are virtually eliminated by adding something useful or even necessary to them. A good example of this is in the first dungeon. In the original, Link can go left and get a key by defeating enemies. Or, Link can go right and get a key by defeating enemies. Or, both, if the player choses not to or does not knows where bomb to avoid using keys. In this remake, Link can only go left. When enemies are defeated, the staircase must be opened and this leads to the right room where the enemies must be defeated to open the exit back to the entry room. Another trick is make dead-end paths useful by having pots in the rooms. This way, players can now grind for hearts and money on a path that was just a waste of time in the original. Also there's more completely optional secrets to discover. Certain room based puzzles in the dungeons have completely new solutions. Player will find themselves using items in ways they are used in other Zelda games and in unique ways. These are usually easy and nearly intuitive. Along the lines of encountering something new in a room in a dungeon on the way to the boss; using the item collected in the same dungeon in a on the new thing to solve the puzzle. These are not just an added step, these teach the player. These new tricks learned in the dungeon can be used elsewhere to find a whole new set of secrets that have been added to the game. Also, use old tricks in new places to find the some of new secrets. This aptly named 1st quest is but only the 1st, no 2nd quest follows on defeating Ganon (to the best of my knowledge).

8 Eyes  Seta;Taxan (Thinking Rabbit)1988After hundreds of years of chaos, mankind has finally emerged from the ruins of nuclear war. This world of the distant future has once again flourished under the guidance of the Great King, who harnessed the power of the 8 Eyes to rebuild the planet. These strange jewels of power were formed at the eyes, or center, of the eight nuclear explosions which nearly destroyed the Earth. In the wrong hands, the 8 Eyes could cause untold destruction... And now, they have been seized by the Great King's eight Dukes, in a desperate bid to gain control of the world for themselves. They have banished the King to the nuclear wastelands, and already their squabbling threatens to plunge the world into war once again! The task of retrieving the 8 Eyes falls to you, Orin the Falconer, the bravest and mightiest of the King's Guardsmen. With your fighting falcon, Cutrus, you must penetrate each of the 8 Dukes' castles. There you will face the Dukes' soldiers, and battle strange nuclear mutants such as living skeletons, giant wasps, and mud men. You must defeat the monstrous Boss of each castle to retrieve the Jewel of Power he guards. Then, to complete your quest, return the 8 Eyes to the Altar of Peace to await the return of the Great King, so that he may finish the rebuilding of Earth. Your reward will be the eternal gratitude of all mankind!***

Abyss Odyssey ATLUS (ACE Team)2014A rogue-lite fighting-platformer game with a very peculiar and oniric setting.

Pros:
-The game is raw fluid art, from the music and atmosphere to the peculiar looks (who seem like and assembly of Bosch paintings, chilean mythology, architecture from the Renaissance and S.XIX colorful portraits)
-Enemy AI is challenging, making each enemy a notable hurdle in your journey.
-A fighting system who lends heavily from Smash Bros. series and adds some other elements (as parries)
-A reset-over gameplay, pointing to the importance of surviving over a foolhardy approach.
-Soul-capture: you can play as your enemies.
-Journal pages: a simple and powerful way of delivering a backstory drop by drop.

Cons:
-Camera zooms are not adequate from time to time.
-The control feels very clunky, making fighting and platforming frustrating. Sadly, this is a MAJOR issue for enjoying the game.

[32]***European version
[29]***
[27]***Generations ago, the world fell into deep Chaos. The Master had maintained the world in a state of peace and harmony. However, an evil one called Tanzra began to threaten its very existence. People spent their lives manifesting their love to their Master while fearing The Evil One. The Master and The Evil One were eternal enemies. In strength and power they were almost equals. Even though the world has fallen into Chaos, somehow the earth continued on its revolving course.***ActRaiser is a single player mix of alternating overhead city-building simulation and side-scrolling platform action. The protagonist in the English version is 'The Master'. A deity who's been away for a while and returns to find his people have been lead astray and their civilization destroyed by the demon Tanzra, "The Evil One". The player is controls things as the Master descends from heaven on a cloud to observer the people and causes a stone statue to be possessed with his spirit. Using this this living statue armed with a sword, demons are slain and souls are freed. The sim mode begins with the creation of a male and female to tend a population center as the Master eliminates more demons and miraculously prepares the way for the people to build and multiply in their little corner of the world. In this view, and angel armed with a bow and arrow is directed against demons emerging from their layers to attack the people. Meanwhile, the people are directed to seal the layers and build where the master directs. At a certain point, the local demons and their leader will regroup to stop the progress. At this point the Master inhabits a statue to finish the job in action mode. This continues for 6 regions until one final standalone action stage completed.

The game's story is in fact a Judeo-Christian allegory; confirmed by the Japanese story of ActRaiser 2 where the protagonist and antagonist characters are revealed to be named God and Satan. No religion/faith tag yet applies to this game entry, however, because the religion of the game's creators is currently unknown to the uvl community (stay tuned). Even without the revelation of the true names of these characters, the allegory is pretty blatant. The Master descends and ascends to heaven, is accompanied by angel(s), creates life (beginning with a male and female), frees souls, performs miracles, destroys demons, creates order and peace out of chaos and strife, he cannot lose (though the player can), defeats the evil one, listens to and answers prayers, accepts offerings (which in turn benefit the people), casts false gods out of his temple, and is totally ignored by the people as soon as they perceive their problems have been eliminated and he loves them anyway.

Hint: Preforming better in the action mode will actually cause more demos to inhabit the lairs in the sim mode. This in turns leads to a higher population potential for the region.
The world map resembles North America
The English version was much easier than the original. But, upon beating the game, the Japanese difficulty level for the action mode is unlocked.
ActRaiser was provided for Wii's Virtual Console in 2007.
[Zerothis]***A masterpiece of game design originally released in the early days of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System , ActRaiser's enduring popularity stems from its revolutionary combination of action- and simulation-based game play. The user plays the role of the Master, a dethroned deity whose once-idyllic world has fallen under the control of the Evil One. Stripped of godly power, the Master must somehow put an end to the Evil One's reign and rebuild his desolate realm. Game play alternates between two modes: Action and Simulation. In Action mode, the Master must battle against impossible odds to pacify six lands. Pacifying a land unlocks Simulation mode. In this mode, the Master must oversee the development and re population of the territory he has reclaimed. In doing so, he will gain followers who gradually restore his godly might, empowering him to take back the next land and, ultimately, defeat the Evil One.***Shame on you if you've never played Actraiser before! This version, other than having an amazingly badass logo, is actually a lot harder than the US release of the game. Even in Fillmore 1, there are more brambles, more monsters, more everything. It's crazy great. Ian Kelley wanted to retranslate the game, so here it is! Far be it from me to deprive one of my star translators from an awesome request or two!

ActRaiser 2  Enix (Quintet)1993Gameplay consists of the normal jumping and slashing, with two major additions: Your character now sports a pair of wings on his back, allowing him to glide short distances (funny how game characters with wings can never seem to actually fly), and there's an entirely new magic system. This time around, you have several spells that you can use in battle (as opposed to having to choose only one at the beginning of the level in Actraiser), and they are cast by holding down the action button, which "charges" you. Once charged, pressing one of the direction buttons and letting go of the action button results in a different spell; for instance, holding up and releasing the action button throws three energy balls at the enemy, while holding down creates a force field around you.***

Adian no Tsue  Sunsoft (Sunsoft;Asmik)1986At first glance you might think that Adian no Tsue is a [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game]-clone. But it only takes the look of Zelda dungeons and mixes it with mathematical problems you have to solve to open doors. You also have to kill or avoid enemies in the rooms. There is also a complete second game on the disk where you are a long-distance runner who runs through Japan and in order to progress further you have to once again solve mathematical calculations. Both games are ultimately boring. The Zelda-style game adds frustrating monster fights to the simple mathematical tasks. You can eventually buy some extra items but this doesn't add much depth. The best about this game is the manual, which comes with a 150+ pages manga. If the developers only had put as much effort into the game as they did with the package and manual... Adventure  Atari;Polyvox (Atari)1980An evil magician has stolen the Enchanted Chalice and has hidden it somewhere in the Kingdom. The object of the game is to rescue the Enchanted Chalice and place it inside the Golden Castle where it belongs.

This is no easy task, as the Evil Magician has created three Dragons to hinder you in your quest for the Golden Chalice. There is Yorgie, the Yellow Dragon, who is just plain mean; there is Grundle, the Green Dragon, who is mean and ferocious; and there is Rhindle, the Red Dragon, who is the most ferocious of all. Rhindle is also the fastest Dragon and is the most difficult to outmaneuver.

There are three castles in the Kingdom; the White Castle, the Black Castle, and the Golden Castle. Each castle has a Gate over the entrance. The Gate can be opened with the corresponding colored Key. Inside each Castle are rooms(or dungeons, depending at which Skill Level you are playing).

The Castles are separated by rooms, pathways, and labyrinths. Common to all the Skill Levels is the Blue Labyrinth through which you must find your way to the Black Castle. Skill Levels 2 and 3 have a more complicated Kingdom.***About the release date:

Could be 1979 or 1980. According to the game developer, Warren Robinett:
I am pretty sure the Adventure cartridge was released during the 1979 Christmas season. But I was in Europe during that time. People were definitely playing Adventure in early 1980 [...] Anyway, the Adventure cart was definitely out in the world by June 1980, and had been out there for a while. My belief is that it was released during the 1979 Christmas season, but I did not actually see an Adventure cart in a retail store prior to Jan. 1, 1980. So I guess I don't truly know for sure.
***
[48]***Adventure was released in North America by Atari, CX2613, picture and text labels rarity 2 Common+, NTSC. Sears 49-75154, picture label rarity 4 Scarce+, text label rarity 3 Scarce, NTSC. Released in South America by Polyvox, NTSC.

This game was inspired by another game called [game=Colossal Cave Adventure]Colossal Cave Adventure[/game] (later known as Colossal Cave) by Will Crowther and Don Woods. Adventure was hundreds of kilobytes in size and ran on a room-sized mainframe; Mr. Robinett's Adventure fit in 2k and ran on a VCS, which is smaller than a VCR.

Mr. Robinett developed this game against his boss' instructions (who said it was too big).
Find the hidden dot that removes a wall and enter a secret room where the words 'Created by Warren Robinett' are spelled out.
Mr. Robinett also did this without permission and it was discovered after he'd left employment with Atari. At the time, programmers at Atari were not given credit, could not discuss their work in public, had no official creative input, were not allowed to collect royalties and were being paid less then some of their own secretaries.

In a development version of the game, there was a roadrunner character that just ran around.

Late in the development of this game, Mr. Robinett was told by marketing to change the game to 'Superman' to ride the hype of the Superman movie that was released in 1978. John Dunn came to the rescue and volunteered to do the [game=#99763]Superman[/game] game.

[game=Rocky's Boots]Rocky's Boots[/game] was the followup to this game and uses a later version of the adventure engine (ADV# engine).

6 de 10***AirBuccaneers is a multiplayer airship pirate game with shamanistic Buccaneers and infamous Vikings fighting over domination of the North. This cooperative 1st person game requires seamless teamwork and strategic battle skills.

Welcome to the ancient North that, once the cradle of culture and peace, is now corrupted by magic and inhabited by nasty bandits sowing destruction in airships.

The Buccaneers blame the Vikings who, according to old sagas, once let the magic escape from their hands. The hatred just keeps adding up, leading the antiheros to even fiercer battles.

Fight over the questionable honor of your tribe in airships loaded with cannons, rockets and gunpowder. The success, as well as the bitter defeat, is solely dependent on how well you co-operate with your crew mates. Maybe one day you will conquer the ancient North and find wonderful Atland, the city of scholars, that was once destroyed by no one but your own tribe.

Finding the right kind of battle strategy is not self-evident in the merciless winds and twisted magic of the North...

- Lord British Starter Kit***A predecessor to Ultima's dungeons, its only purpose was to allow you to descend into a dungeon, fight monsters, and make your way through the maze.***This game originally came on a cassette packaged in a zip-lock bag, along with an eight-page instruction booklet. Richard Garriott simply 'published' a few dozen copies in zip-lock baggies at a local Computerland store where he worked. The documentation sheet with art was also done by hand. Only two copies are currently located in the hands of collectors. Richard Garriott kept one for himself and he also has a box with 12 more new in mint condition. 15 known copies. Garriott has promised to auction his boxed copies one at a time on ebay. Garriott's boss sent one copy to California Pacific Computer Co. They wanted to publish it on a large scale. (the California Pacific Computer's copy is unknown).
MSRP: ?

In 1980, California Pacific Computer Co. began publishing a 5.25" disk version. The artwork was only slightly improved and it still came in a zip-lock bag
MSRP: $34.95

In 1981, Ultima (Ultima I) was released and at the same time Akalabeth was re-released in a traditional box and 5.25" disk. The cover art for this release was Denis Loubet.'s "Wrong Way" and the same one that was reused for Ultima II.
MSRP: $34.95

The Lord British Starter Kit was a compilation of Akalabeth and Ultima released by California Pacific Computer Co. before rights were sold to Sierra On-line.

In 1997, Origin released The Ultima Collection, in which Akalabeth was known as Ultima 0. That version of Akalabeth was done in assembly language by Garriott himself because there was never an assembly language version nor IBM-PC version of Akalabeth until then.

Aklabeth is effectively Ultima 0. It was written for the Apple II in Basic.

This game is a port, written in a mixture of C and C++. I wrote this a year or two back, can't remember why, in C. I glued it to my SDL wrapper library and released it.

It's a RPG - sort of. You wander the top world, visit 3D (sort of) dungeons, beat up monsters and perform tasks for the legendary Lord British (AKA Richard Garriott).

It requires the SDL Library.

Allods Online  Nival Online;Gala Networks Europe (Astrum Nival)2009Personally I hate the fact that parties are only formed for mobs that require about 10 or so people to work together ("raid") to defeat. Besides that, parties don't seem to be formed and everyone is soloing. If parties were formed more readily (and actually needed by more than the support classes, such as the healer), I might consider this a good game, but woe, it does not. There's a high variety in the available classes, but the annoyingly non-existant need to work together like in some other MMOs just makes this a very boring single-player experience.

Of course, I don't know about high level stuff since leveling up there on solo takes a looong time.
