When I first saw the purple moving clouds in the skies of the game on the free demo I remember I rushed to the store to buy it!! I can remember I played night after night just to finish the game and had sleepy eyes on the office the day after. In the end of the game there was some kind of a monster on a small island which you could jump on to finish it off.. No doubt about it: In its genre, one of the best games ever.

Hocus Pocus Apogee (Moonlite Software)1994platformer shooter Fantasy Terexin, leader of the Council of Wizards, is sending the young sorcerer, Hocus, on a special mission to prove his worthiness. This mission will take Hocus to 16 unique realms, each filled with unique dangers and enemies. Few have survived Terexin's final test--for many it's a one-way trip.

Along the way Hocus will encounter dragons, imps, ghosts and 30 more unique creatures, demons and enemies. Survive, and Hocus becomes a full-fledged, card carrying Wizard. The other option is not so favorable. Awesome and beautiful 256-color VGA graphics. After every two levels of play the level graphics, background and enemies completely change, giving this game unparalleled variety. Hocus Pocus is a action platform game, with exciting puzzles built into each level's structure.

Hocus is armed with a standard magic spell (he's not yet a full Wizard, after all), but he can find several potions that give him a temporary boost of magical energy. There are potions that give Hocus the ability to shoot rapidly, jump higher, teleport and fire a devastating energy blast, among others.

COOL FEATURES
* Smooth 360 degree scrolling, with a parallax background.
* Over SIX MEGS of 256-color VGA animated graphics.
* Four episodes with 36 huge levels!
* Over 30 different monsters, plus four huge bosses!
* Save/restore options, selectable skill levels, four cheat passwords!

Hocus Pocus is an addictive, action-packed, entertaining game that's comparable, or better than, anything found on the home cartridge systems.

Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold Apogee Software (JAM Productions)1993shooter Science Fiction One year after Wolfenstein 3D, the same engine was used in another game. This was released one week before id Software took over the world with the shareware release of Doom. Doom squashed it; Blake Stone sold poorly despite positive reviews. id even had a stake in Blake Stone, it build the texture mapping engine for the game. The game takes place in the future. You are agent "Blake", who has to accomplish some missions. The goal is to stop the evil doctor "Goldfire", who created some aliens. The game consists of six episodes, each of which features 11 levels, nine regular and two secret. The elimination of all enemies on the current floor or the collection of all treasure items are optional objectives that provide bonuses upon completion. In the game ceiling and floor are texturized, which was new. There were no terrain heights, but you could use elevators to get back into levels you already played. Special level features include: locked doors which can be opened by four types of colored keys (gold, green, yellow, blue), one-way doors, secret rooms accessible through pushable wall blocks, and teleports that instantly take the player into another location within the level. There's also lighting effects and an automap function, sorely missed in Wolfenstein 3D. Calling this automap also shows your your current progress, rating and percentage of enemies killed. And there are crates you can shoot. They will explode and sometimes reveal some goodies. Another unique feature of the game is the fact that Dr. Goldfire appears periodically in certain sections on different levels and will actually attack Stone. After being hit a few times, he activates a teleporter on his watch and escapes. There are several weapons available, more than there are in Wolfenstein 3D. Also included are features such as clipping, and invisibility, and auto-mapping. Really new were in-game characters, who were not always hostile but sometimes even gave hints. Because of this, the pure "shoot everything that moves"- scheme was not valid anymore. Besides this, the game was not state of the art. The graphics were out-dated and did not look as good as others of that time, Doom and Terminator Rampage. A nice game of that time, but it did not manage to stand out. labelimagesubject

The Dark Heart of Uukrul Brøderbund (Digital Studios)1990role-play turn-based Fantasy
[49]***This game has some interactive fiction, adventure and not yet defined elements. Players can visually search the room or listen find secrets, to get descriptions of the room, find riddles that hint at solutions to puzzles, and/or find clues to events in the nearby area. These are returned as text as the game has no sound whatsoever.

Advancement must be confirmed by player actions. Crosses are not just symbols in this game, they are apparently melee weapons. Equipment can require a minimum level of experience and/or a minimum character attribute. Clerics must pray to cast spells (all one action). The petitioned god can grant the cast, not answer, or punish the character. These random responses seem to be based on the character's previous actions but the mechanism is unclear.

The game is automatically saved much the same way as typical rogue-likes but a bit less often. Simply walking from one place to the next does not prompt a save, but reading a clue or resolving an encounter does. There is also a game "backup" save system. When a player is in a "sanctuary" they may manually create a second save.

Experience is shared but most of it distributed unequally based on a character's participation. The mechanism is unclear. Killing blows and attacks delivering significant damage have the most reward. Other actions are rewarded as well no mater what the result. Every character still gets something even if they did not interact with the battle at all. For example, if the first move of a battle is the player's fighter killing a single foe with a single blow, all other party members will get at least 1 XP or more for a stronger enemey.***If a character sacrifices their life to save their fellows, they lose piety. possessed - the humans you encounter are controlled by demonic spirits or some such, not zombies or anything.***DoomEd as well as the DOS version of DOOM were developed on a several platforms running NeXTSTEP 3.3. Superb level design, well-designed weapons and truly frightening atmosphere. The pseudo-3D levels (Doom's engine didn't allow for levels to be multi-layered) were the best looking and immersive of the time and are still enjoyable today.
Also one of the PC's most copied games, its influence rings true in the vast array of First-person shooters. This has been both a blessing and a curse for gamers, as unimaginative and poorly executed Doom-clones swamped release schedules in the mid-to-late 90s.
Doom was originally released as shareware, allowing Doom to gather a massive following very quickly.***My first digital addiction.. pure nostalgia.

7 de 10***The first mission ties with the movies in that Kyle serves as the guy who fetches the Death Star plans so Luke (unmentioned in the game) can destroy it. The actual game starts from the events following it, however, as the Dark Trooper project gets into operational state. Rest of the game story is built around this project, uncovering information about it and sabotaging it.

Unlike most games of old and even modern, many of the missions in Dark Forces involve the player locating something and then returning to the start point where the vessel that brought Kyle in is ready to extract him again (or shortly arrives there!). There's also turrets going berserk, armor not providing perfect protection, shared ammo between two weapons (the other consumes more ammo), grenades having a charged throw (throws farther the longer you hold the fire key), actual 3D models (spacecraft and turrets), overpasses (near true 3D levels), sectioned maps within single level, a glow lamp with depleting batteries (instead of single use light "powerup"), and probably some other features that weren't seen in games around the time Dark Forces came out.***2009-09-16 on Steam, by LucasArts (lang: eng, fre, ger, ita, spa) - bundled with DOSBox and default control configuration somewhat similar to modern FPS games (original controls were very different).***war - since the protagonist is a mercenary who is mostly hired for "covert" ops, this bit is not so evident, but these are part of the Rebel Alliance's war effort against the Empire.
depth fog - only used in some levels, especially some of the outside levels to simulate thick atmosphere (or dust?).
autosave points - on mission completion, no other saves are made. Player can freely replay any level they've finished.
voice overs - besides videos and taunts from the empire's minions, there's actually some voice overs besides them, such as Kyle reporting having found something pertinent to the mission and Jan giving farther instructions (albeit all of these are rather short compared to the voice overs in videos).
