HTML specification started back in 2004, aiming to be fully finished by 2014. Notably adds support for hardware accelerated graphics via WebGL (subset of OpenGL) though includes many other things as well.

Omiod games, Blizzard Entertainment and Load Up Games has published most of these games

Primary benefit of HTML5 is the <canvas> element which is used by JavaScript via WebGL (a subset of OpenGL ES 2.0) for hardware accelerated graphics.

These have potential to be either server-side or client-side games regardless.
