After Burner  Sunsoft1989This should not be confused with the US Tengen version of After Burner. Both ports were done independently. The title screen says After Burner II, while the box title obmisses the II, which was also common with homecomputer versions, because After Burner II was only a minor upgrade instead of a whole new game.***アフターバーナ is tranliteration of "after burner" and literally reads
afutaa baana
. Dr. Chaos FCI;Pony Canyon (Marionette)1988Originally a Famicom Disk System game. Apparently there was an obscure cartridge version published in Japan also.***The NES version of "Dr. Chaos" was released over a year after the original Famicom Disk System release in Japan. "Dr. Chaos" is an unusual action/platform game that reminded me of Konami's [game=#8335]The Goonies II[/game], because in both games you can explore special rooms in first-person-style adventure mode. In Dr. Chaos these rooms are only for finding extra weapons and ammo as well as the entries to warp zones. In those zones you make your way from left to right, kill a boss, collect a part of a super-weapon, and finally - and thats not really nice - walk back to the entrance of the zone in search for the next zone. The game is only average in graphics and music. It is playable, there are no control problems. But the game feels a bit repetitive. The warp zones are too similar, a few more graphical themes would have been nice. The adventure rooms look bland and undetailed and mainly consist of trying to open everything and hitting all the walls for finding hidden passages. Besides a few musical differences, the NES version is pretty much identical to the Famicom Disk System version.***A platformer with a twist, three different styles of play include traversing the main house, exploring the roooms in a faux 3d view, and finally platform jumping (and mutant killing) in alternate dimensions. Dragonstrike  Pony Canyon;FCI (Westwood Associates)1992NES-DS-USA
1 player or 2 player hotseat ,pde.
Choose a red, gold or bronze dragon to battle with. Each type of dragon has different abilities and dragons. Dragons have two different breath weapons. This is a scrolling shoot but the dragons can fly in any direction to the edges of the map. They can also fly at two levels, diving in close to take out small targets or to dodge aerial opponents. Dragons must battle dragon slayers on the ground and even other dragons. There are three levels of difficulty.

In 2 player mode, the other player immediately takes over the mission when the previous dies.

This game is notable different from the other version of DragonStrike in that is it an multilevel overhead scrolling shooter rather than a flight sim like the others.

Elysion  Tokyo Shoseki (SystemSoft)1988"Elysion" is a run-of-the-mill Action-RPG game. At the start of the game you choose one of four different characters with different stats regarding HP, Magic and weapon use. Then you get the task from the king to rescue the realm or something like that. You visit several different locations like forests deserts etc, kill enemies for xp, buy stuff in shops and so on. Nothing new, nothing fresh, with sub-par graphics and rather annoying music. NESlabelimageminimize
Esper Bōkentai: Maō no Toride  Jaleco (NMK)1987***"Esper Boukentai" is a quite unusual platform game. First of all it has some typical RPG elements like gathering xp from killing monsters (with a giant hammer) thus leveling up and increasing stats like speed, attack or jumping power. The game consists of one big level which has many rooms connected by doors which must be opened by touching colored idols. Some rooms can only be entered with certain items (like a gas mask) or by using special abilities from some friends which you can switch to once you rescued them. Mapping in the game is needed since the layout is quite complicated. Also, this must be the game with the most insane super jumping I have ever played. Once you reached higher levels and with the correct character you can jump literally a dozen screens high.
The game is decent, but not good enough to be called a classic.

Family School  Tokyo Shoseki (Tokyo Shoseki;Toppan Printing)1987As a promotional game and not a game of the official Famicom game catalog this one positively surprised me. Its some sort of action transport puzzle game where your task is to water plants in some kind of garden so that fruit grows. Then you have to push the right fruit into the right basket at the edge of the playing field. Watch out for animals which will try to harm you. The game can be played with at least two players simultaneously and is quite well playable for what it wants to be. The graphics are a bit plain looking and there is not really much to it, but as I said at the beginning for being a promotional game its OK. The game is of course more expensive than your normal Famicom game, but not really super rare; with original copies being up on auction sites nealy all the time.***This game was apparently was given as a free gift by, 第一生命 (Dai-ichi life), an insurance company, to people who purchased policies from them. Gradius ArchiMENdes is a special edition given as a contest prize. Pills in the game are replaced with bowls of ramen noodles.***Gradius is one or two steps beyond every other Famicom/NES shooting game released at its time. The game ends the time where shooting games would loop endlessly. Gradius features several very different designed levels with great graphics and music as well as a clever extra-weapon upgrade system and good playability.***Across the galaxy, there exists a distant planet known as Gradius. Gradius’ peaceful existence has been brought to an end by an intense space invasion by a race known as the Bacterion. To save the planet, the hyperspace fighter Vic Viper has been deployed to fight the Bacterion invasion. Players pilot the Vic Viper through seven stages, shooting and dodging through deadly obstacles, while using various power-ups, including missiles, lasers, options and shields. The Vic Viper’s target is the enemy fortress, Xaerous. The only way to end the war is to plunge deep through the enemy forces and destroy its very core.

[52]***While the catalog number for the Canadian version is officially "NES-GS-CAN", the cartridge itself mere shows "CAN".
Likewise, the Great Britain/Italy version shows "GBR".
The Hong Kong version catalog number "NES-GS-HGK" does not actually appear on the cartridge. But this is known to be the correct catalog number from official Nintendo sources.
Likewise, "NES-GS-ASI" is not shown on the Asian version cartridge. But this is known to be the correct catalog number from official Nintendo sources.
Although the name "ガム・シュー" does not appear on any of the original game materials, other Nintendo sources do use this name.
"ガムシュー" is used unofficially.
The catalog number for the Japanese version is "HVC-GS". However, this does not appear on any game materials. This is a very obscure Japanese release.
"HVC-GS" is the also catalog number used for the Wild Gunman and Zapper set sold in Japan. "HVC-WG" is the catalog number for the normal Wild Gunman package.***The most notable thing about Gumshoe is the fact that this is the very first NES game that was not released in Japan. It is a Zapper game, but unlike other games the game looks and plays like a platform game. Shooting obstacles and enemies costs ammo, which can be filled by collecting balloons. Shooting the main character makes him jump. The constant switching between jumping and killing enemies can be very confusing and hectic, making this a very difficult game. The four stages are graphically varied and are well designed as is the music. I just wish they had made it a normal platformer with normal controls.***A Zapper game where you must rescue Mr. Stevenson's kidnapped daughter by helping him reach the five 'Black Panther' diamonds for the ransom. Shoot obstacles in the way, or shoot the main character to make him jump to avoid danger or reach higher platforms.

Ruthless gold-stealing bandits are terrorizing the townsfolk and it's up to you to stop them! The thieves are notorious killers, and when they challenge you to a draw, they're playing for keeps! Although your gunslinging prowess is legendary, this may be the toughest High Noon you'll ever face. But you've got to stand your ground - this town ain't big enough for both you and them!***
[103]***
[33]***"Gun.Smoke" is a playable Commando-style run and gun game in a western setting. You play a lonesome gunslinger on his mission to stop a gang of bandits of terrorizing peaceful villagers. Graphics, sound and are decent. The game is relatively easy compared to other games of that era and controls are fine. The game has a small shopping feature where you can upgrade your standard weapon with money from money bags you collect on the way. "Strangest" gameplay element is the exclusively diagonal shooting from the hero, but after you get used to it it works well enough.***

But don't take your eyes off the screen for two long - because anything can happen in Gyromite!***

[52]***The catalog number for the Great Britain / Italy version of this game is officially "NES-GY-GBR". However, the cartridge simply has "GBR" on the label. Some Canadian version cartridges likewise show only "CAN". Also "FRA" for some French Versions. Some USA version cartridges have no catalog number printed on the cartridge label. You are playing a professor who has to collect all dynamite in each level. One player controls the professor, the second player controls the pillars, which block the way. Pillars can also be used to kill enemies by squishing them beneath pillar and ground or ceiling. R.O.B. can also take the role as second player. The game is quite interesting with nice graphics and music for its time. Now the problem is to get a willing second player or R.O.B. to fully enjoy the game, because alone it doesn't rise to its full potential.***Since the average younger sibling is usually slightly smarter that ROB, they are a much better choice as a 2nd player.
[Zerothis]***1 player or 2 players simultaneous cooperative. Technically, the game is two player only, one human player only, R.O.B. being the second player.

This is a very basic platform game with the added twist of a second player having simple control over certain elements in the game world. It is intended that the first player would command ROB to spin up his gyroscopes and move them around to push buttons on the 2nd player controller to manipulate the game world on behalf of player 1. Thus human player 1 and robot player 2 would cooperate to beat the game.

Hyper Olympic  Konami1985the JAN code 4 988602 502190 is used in numerous outlets to refer to both ハイパーオリンピック (Hyper Olympic) and ハイパーオリンピック 限定版! (Hyper Olympic Gentaiban! ). Hyper Olympic is 4 events based on Konami's Arcade game of the same name. It seems appropriate to note here that Hyper Olympic's PCB has no chips, just 2 'gloptops'. Which is often a sign of fast and sloppy manufacture. Hyper Olympic Gentaiban! has all eight events and is the same game as Track and Field. There's a bit of tech difference also. Gloptop Hyper Olympic uses no memory mapper while the aditional data of the Gentaiban edition reires the use of a mapper.***For Hyper Olympic, Konami took four track&field disciplines (100m dash, long jump, 110m hurdles and javelin throw) from the arcade version and put them on this Famicom cartridge (a few months later they would eventually release four more events as [game=#168936]Hyper Sports[/game] and a US release with all eight events on the same catridge as [game=#8384]Track & Field[/game]). The game is a good example of a varied and well playable multi-sport events game. Once again defeat henchmen, creatures and bosses with new fighting techniques and even more weapons as you progress through multiple stages on your way to destroying Ashtar, Jaquio and the Realm of Chaos.***A classic hit from Tecmo, Ninja Gaiden II satisfied the people's desire for more butt-kicking ninja action. With more enemies, power-ups, and awesome ninja skills, you could have even more fun testing your ninja mettle.

The creators of the Ninja Gaiden III felt they could not find a suitable story to follow Ninja Gaiden II; so they created a story preceding the NG2 storyline but after the events of the original Ninja Gaiden.

The Japanese version had a password system which effectively gave players infinite continues. In a bold and rare occurrence, the USA version was purposefully made harder than the Japanese version in gameplay and by replacing the password system with a limited number of continues.***Join master ninja Ryu Hayabusa, last member of the famous Dragon Clan, in the third and final chapter of the legendary Ninja Gaiden saga. Ryu is framed for FBI agent Irene Lew's murder, and it's up to him to clear his name. Defeating superior life-forms created out of "life energy" called BIO-NOIDs and avoiding enemy ambushes are among the many obstacles which Ryu faces in this unpredictable adventure of mystery, deceit and destruction. Noticeable changes to the game-play mechanics include Ryu's ability to grab on to horizontal surfaces, his reduced falling speed and altered jumping maneuvers, and visible power-ups. Help Ryu defeat the forces of evil once more and discover the real culprit behind Irene's death as one of the most loved trilogies in video-game history comes to a close.

[52]***Now you're the King of Spinach in a battle for Olvie's love! Are you ready to climb ladders, jump landings, eat spinach and punch out Brutus, Seahag and the flying Bernard? Because that's what it takes to win Olive Oyl's hand in marriage. You'll score points by defeating your enemies and collecting the "love tokens" Olive drops from her window. The more you collect, the more points you'll score and the faster you'll win her love. But watch out. Around every corner lurks another jealous suitor. You'll have to think with your head as well as your heart to win this fast action love affair!***

It is most certainly a typo of the valid code 0-45496-63023-2 which appears on other packages.***Popeye and Brutus are at it again in this video contest for Olive Oyl's affection. As Popeye, you must battle the likes of Brutus and the Sea Hag while you race to collect all of the floating hearts that Olive tosses to you. Once you have Spinach power, Popeye can conquer all, but without it, watch out! [...] Olive throws things and Popeye has to pick them up while avoiding the attacks of Brutus, Seahag and Bernard. In round I, Olive throws hearts; in round II, musical notes; and in round III, letters of the alphabet. Try to pick them all up before they sink in the water.***Popeye was one of the launch games for the Famicom/NES system release in Japan. It's a well done conversion of Nintendo's own Popeye arcade game. The goal in each level is to catch all objects that Olive Oyl is throwing down (hearts, notes etc.), while at the same time avoid being catched by Bluto. Graphics are great for a game from 1983 and I still like the gameplay and the different design of each level.

0-47875-42188-2 is actually the UPC for the Commodore 64 version (it has been removed from this entry).

The game has "Jungle Mode" and "Big Mode" offering two simular but different styles of gameplay. The Japanese version begins with Big Mode where as other versions begin in Jungle mode. (This lead to two entries at UVL at one time)

Race America  Milton Bradley;Absolute Entertainment (Imagineering)1992UPC 0-18706-20893-4 is used extensively in relationship to the North American version this game and apparently no other products and is a valid code. However, all North American packages I've seen use 0-99451-72206-7***Corvette ZR-1 Challenge by Milton Bradley in 1991

A unique take for 8-bit racing. The view switches based on context. Players are put on the starting line in 3Dish side view. This is a drag race, there's potholes to avoid, the winner gets a bonus. After the dash from the standing start, they cars keep rolling and the view switches to third-person split screen. But, the upper split view takes a major portion of the screen. The big view, is for the leading character. The lower split view is for 2nd place. It is very small but other wise an identical camera to the larger view. Red's (Player 1) small view is attached to the left side of the screen while Blue's view is attached to the right. When Red and Blue are close to each other, the view switches again to overhead and they battle for the bigger 3rd person screen.

Races for both versions are City-to-city open road courses in North America and bystanders will have to be dodged. The cities are Boston, New York, Washington D.C., Cincinnati, Detroit, Chicago, Kansas City, Dallas, Denver, and Los Angeles. Each segment of the race ends at one of these cities (except Boston, where the race begins). There are turns and hills. Gas cans on the road need to be picked up, go slower than 100 MPH and run over it. A full tank lasts about 300 miles but varies slightly with fuel efficiency that depends on how the car is driven and the various hills and turns. All the drivers have identical cars but the AI is different. AJ Turbo is the hardest to beat.

Depending on what version you play, you'll be racing Corvettes (European version), Dodge Vipers (North America), or generic vehicles with made-up model numbers that strongly resemble the Corvette or Viper and have identical specs of said vehicles.

Raid on Bungeling Bay  Brøderbund;Hudson Soft (Hudson Soft)1985On a tiny, remote planet, the evil Bungeling Empire is creating an awesome war machine. Civilization as we know it seems doomed. One faint hope remains. A single highly mobile raider might be able to carry out a surgical strike to the heart of The War Machine. Only a fighter pilot of enormous skill and courage could hope to neutralize all six Bungeling islands. Even as you strike at one island, robots repair the damage you've done, attacking again and again with a savage arsenal of destruction. Who could possibly succeed? Who else but you?

The hippest cool Kat in New York, Willy, is hot on the tail of local crime boss, Mugsy. The fur's gonna fly 'cause Mugsy just cat-nabbed Willy's girl, Jill, and stashed her away. To find her, Willy has to face hoods on the streets of the Big Apple, duel desperados in the wild west, dog-fight Ace Pilots at 40,000 feet, and avoid being de-railed at an amusement park. But he's not called the Rockin' Kat for nothing, and when he starts break dancin' and body slammin' his enemies, make room on the dance floor!***Apparently this game is extremely difficult to find complete in Japan. Thus, few have access to the JAN code on the box.
