8 de 10***They're back...only this time the heinous aliens are out to destroy Earth and rule the new frontier. As X-COM commander, it's your sole duty to protect humanity and the prized mining operations in outer space. You must strategically equip your X-COM fighters, amass a formidable arsenal and then fulfill your mandate by going head-to-head with the devious element. The action is fast. And the opposing forces are wicked. But if you are smart, diligent and quick, you will prevail in a masterfully fought campaign to save our planet from perilous collapse.

Features:

* Wreak complete destruction in an addictive and seamless combination of combat action and strategy.
* Mastermind your plan by purchasing equipment, hiring pilots and researching new technologies.
* Pilot your own X-COM attack ship in a face-to-face 3D real-time first person environment.

Flatspace Cornutopia Software2003Flatspace is a space trading and flight simulation. The ultimate objective in the game is to locate and assemble parts of a galactic hyperdrive, however there is a lot of freedom for the player and as a space captain, you can explore, decide what you want to do and how you want to play.

To make a profit, you could opt to trade cargo between eerie space stations, or become a space pirate and steal cargo. You can join the police force, or become a bounty hunter and track and destroy the most wanted criminals in the galaxy. You can mine asteroids, act as a high speed courier or taxi paying customers from sector to sector.

Flatspace aims to be the most comprehensive game of it's type and feels like a simulation, while retaining a fast paced arcade feel to the combat. Starscape Moonpod2003real-time combat - some nodes are devoid of enemy presence (especially after you've destroyed them all), so this is somewhat inaccurate, but (more) enemies can warp in at any time (sort of), so it's sufficient.***If you like arcade shooters and don't mind spending half of your time mining asteroids for minerals, you might actually like this. However, arcade shooter fans will be more at home with this than most others as the game starts to get quite hectic towards the end. Maintaining mineral reserves, protecting the mobile spacestation, and repairing your ship and the station even during the fights will get quite common tasks. Asteroid mining is more required by research and development of new ships and ship hardware than for repairs as some of the larger enemy ships actually leave some minerals or hardware to be used for repairs, often in sufficient numbers. The other part of the game is spent hunting the bigger ships, mostly mining vessels as their destruction detracts the enemy's ability to produce more units within each zone, and to find grid information for important locations not normally shown in the grid map. The game world is split into five zones, each larger than the last, which you can explore in any order you wish but jumping more than one zone will spell certain doom as you need the technology from the previous ones to survive (and unlock the more powerful hardware). The grid and zone maps work in some semi-turn-based fashion, with time passing when you move or when you hit the skip time button. Time also passes freely when inside a grid node, where the game runs in real-time - the enemy continues to produce new units, harvest other grid nodes, and move forces around, even bringing reinforcements occasionally in while you spend your time there. Overall it's a nice game, but towards the end, especially the final boss, you start wishing you hadn't touched the game in the first place - unless you have masochistic tendencies with video games.***Minimum:

Star Wolves  1C Company (X-bow Software)2005Description

Star Wolves is a 3D space RPG with deep strategy and tactical elements. The game thrusts players into a world of freelance space hunters in the XXI-XXII Century A.D. during a time of political crisis for the all-powerful Empire and the three mega-corporations that control all the known worlds. Corruption prospers planet-side and only space can give a man his freedom, but not without a cost: space is not a safe place anymore. Human space pirates, rogue AI computers that rebelled against humanity and Empire patrol ships roam space in search of easy prey.

Players begin the game as a bounty hunter with little more than an old, run-down space fighter and a dream, but as they advance in the game and prosper, their piloting and battle skills improve, allowing access to more advance spacecraft. Players can control a party of up to six bounty hunters, each possessing different skills, abilities and personality. Team tactics give players vast opportunities in battles when shear fire power isn't enough. Tactical ruses, planning and executing ambushes or deploying spaceships' special abilities provide cunning commanders the ability to crush enemies according to their style of play.

Features

* Spectacular 3D real-time battle system
* Original blend of tactical and action game play
* Variety of missions and mission-types including stealth, hit and run and assault missions
* Non-linear storyline and game play
* Secondary and secret quests along with primary missions
* Over 25 space fighters
* Dozens of energy and missile weapons
* Over 40 missions
* A choice of eight game characters, both male and female, to form your party
* Original RPG system

X³: Reunion  Deep Silver (Egosoft)2005A game about the vastness of the space in a very big universe filled with all kinds of stuff (as ships, stations, asteroids...) and comprising a lot of different ways to play the game (militar, merchant, raider, police, transporter, salvager...) Its complexity and freedom are almost infinite, and has very clever features as speeding the time (for long travels) and very well-crafted reputation and market systems.

But there are 3 big issues with the game:
-The interface and controls are straight horrendous, forcing to employ the auto-pilot more than it should.
-The mission panel is very spartan and doesn´t records any indication of a possible mission (only points at already signed contracts, not featuring indications recieved in messages)
-Theres only 1 message log (important and worth-saving messages merge with a gigantic clutter of mundane conversations and tips)
These 3 problems make the in-game progress very difficult and immensely slow, and the game very boring/frustrating to play.

3 of 10***Greatest flaw in this that I see is that there's no task tracker. You're forced to remember and make notes yourself of what you agree to do and what others tell you to do, though you can review the message log as you like, it's hardly intuitive. This is especially bad considering the game's a sandbox.***Latest version: 2.5 (as of 2007)***Minimum:

[Ascaron]***"Darkstar One" is a game that is primarily story-based and therefore pre-defined; however, "Darkstar One" also offers a fantastic amount of freedom of choice for the players.

The story-based missions gradually lead the player deeper into the galaxy to new races, new technologies and ever stronger opponents. More and more solar systems will become available and may be visited. The artifacts of an ancient race, which are hidden in these solar systems, are essential to upgrade the player ship - the Darkstar One.

Additionally, our hero urgently requires credits in order to purchase better equipment such as weapons and shields. This is where the freedom of choice is applied as the player will be able to earn credits in many different ways: assignments, bounty hunting, piracy, smuggling, trading, escorting, transport, rewards ...

Key Features
* Elaborate story, related by more than fifty minutes of video sequences
* Upgradeable space ship "Darkstar One": The player decides which type of spacecraft he prefers - a fast attack ship with many light weapons or a near-invincible cruiser with heavy weaponry
* Over two hundred different weapons, shields and equipment items
* Rockets, torpedoes and mines feature special tactical uses: mines can tactically fire at opponents or distract approaching missiles
* The "Spell Weapon": the player will have a special weapon at his disposal that will have an area of effect similar to certain spells in role-playing games. This weapon will become increasingly versatile throughout the game and it will increase the tactical potential considerably.
* A vast, simulated universe with numerous, completely different races, space ships and battle tactics.
* Each race features distinctive weapon types with different functions that require different battle tactics. The player will be able to acquire these weapons in order to mount them on the "Darkstar One".
* Special missions, for example in canyons, on the surface of planets or inside of planets
* Freedom of choice: the player may earn his credits in many ways, i.e. fighting, piracy, assignments, smuggling, trading, escorting, transporting, rewards ...
* Follow your own path, be it "good" or "bad", and take advantage of political disputes.
* Compatible with mouse, joystick and gamepad.
[Ascaron]***health warning — you start hearing a warning sound. when viewing the game from the cockpit you see the red warning light flashing on the 3D HUD and even being reflected on the canopy (though lack of the protagonist's reflection is a bit strange at these times.

The basic controls are similar to Freelancer, which means the game plays great with mouse and keyboard alone with no need for joystick.

The game's story is odd as it states that the DarkStar One is an organic ship, but it is one of the most mechanical looking ones out there (with very out-of-place camo paintjob).***2008-02-14 on Steam, by Strategy First (lang: eng)***Reminded me of [[game:Wing Commander]], [[game:Tie Fighter]], etc. from the good old days, so I thought I'd pick it up. Funny thing is, when the game crashes, it gives you an error report in German--how helpful!

Dark Horizon  Akella;Paradox Interactive (Quazar Studio)2008The game ''Dark Horizon'' takes the player to the very beginning of the Second Era of Enosta Universe, about a century before the disappearance of the legendary cruiser ''Talestra''.

This chronicle begins on a date which became a judgment day for many races of the Galaxy, when a new form of Mirk came into existence, later to be called ''De'Khete''. The player takes part in these events as a member of the race of Guardians. Once human, now transformed by the Mirk, the Guardians created their own world and found the strength to confront the incoming menace.

''Dark Horizons'' is a look at the past of the world through the eyes of those who are currently the spawns of the Mirk, and who's victories could give hope to many. During the missions, the player will have to go through a long and exhausting defense of the place that became the second home to the Guardians, fighting alongside the people transformed by the Mirk, who's powers lay beyond human comprehension.

This is a story about the warriors of Vattar Ama'Dan fortress, called to defend the construction of the ''Light Core'', which would save billions of lives later on. Their heroism is immortalized in the Tarr Chronicles, the dark annals of the dying galaxy of Enosta.

Features

* A hybrid technology of two races, the Guardians and Bioses, is an example of cooperation against a common threat. More powerful ships of unusual construction, more powerful weapons.
* Shadow mode allows you to become invisible to your enemies for a short period of time, while Corter mode significantly improves the power of your weapons. Only a skilful combination of these two modes will allow the player to complete the game.
* Now you have the option of constructing not only special devices for your ship, but also new weapons. Having studied the enemy, the player will be able to assemble a more effective combat equipment in any quantities, limited only be the available resources.
* Interacting with your allies will allow you to deal with difficult enemies more effectively.

X³: Terran Conflict  Deep Silver (Egosoft)2008As a expansion/remake of X3: Reunion, improves a lot its interface and controls (now its a little complex but very user-friendly) and adds a few interesting campaigns (the previous game was heavily war-oriented in gameplay) Also, the graphics are nicer.
Nevertheless, it still features clunky message and mission systems, making it only a little better than the original game.

4 of 10***X³: Terran Conflict is a brand new, stand-alone game set in the universe of X³. It is the culmination of the X trilogy, with a grand finale that takes us all the way back to Earth's own solar system. Gamers can take on the roles of different characters in the X universe, or of a Terran military pilot, and experience a multitude of stories in the largest X universe ever featured - for X³: Terran Conflict will offer more missions than any other X game before. Meanwhile, X³: Terran Conflict will pose questions such as: How has Earth changed in all these years? And how will relations between Earth and its counterparts in the X universe develop?

6 de 10***At its core, Space Pirates and Zombies is an action based, skill oriented, top down space combat game. It’s similar to the ones we knew and loved in years past, but now using full physics simulation and modern graphics for those oh so pretty explosions. But as you dig deeper, SPAZ becomes much more.

Instead of flying a single ship, you are in charge of an ever growing and evolving fleet, unlocking the rich tactical elements of SPAZ, all accessed at the touch of a button. Issue orders, change ships, apply fleet AI settings, all on the fly. At any moment the battle can change, and the Tactics Panel gives you the tools to make the battle turn in your favor.

As a layer on top of the action and tactics, we have a detailed technology and levelup system akin to what you would expect from an RPG. Learn to build new ships by destroying your enemies. Explore the galaxy to find components, use your hard earned research points to unlock their potential, and then customize every aspect of your new fleet.

Finally, there is the universe in which all this strife and adventure takes place. SPAZ features a persistent randomly generated Galaxy populated with story elements, factions, enemies, missions, items, to provide you with a unique experience each time you play. While you are struggling to survive, uncover the secret of an ever expanding Zombie infestation that spreads by establishing its own real time multi-tiered ecosystem.

Key features:
* 33 ships to research, build, outfit and pilot.
* 70 unique components to discover and customize your fleet’s performance.
* Totally physics based combat system.
* Fight Zombie infestations, battling a full zombie ecosystem comprising four stages of un-life.
* Explore a persistent randomly generated galaxy containing hundreds of star systems.
* Freedom to explore the galaxy and take on challenges at your own pace.
* Aid, flee, or exploit the warring factions in each star system.
* The unique event system lets the player change the balance of power in any star system
* Carefully spend your hard earned research points on hundreds of upgrades across 15 categories.

X³: Albion Prelude  Egosoft2011As the expansion of X3: Terran Conflict, it improves the merge between war, market and diplomatic systems, making factions weaker if its economy becomes stagnant or making easier to get the help of the enemy of your enemy, and many other new ways to interact with the different species. Also includes a lot of new items, ships, etc...
Sadly, the game is still very slow and frustrating because not only the mission system (almost the same, but with more chained missions that "hide" this radical flaw), but because the uncareness of the game for the player when you finish the tutorial (its difficult to encounter feasible missions or even something relevant to do)

4 of 10***X3: Albion Prelude is the latest game in the X3 space game series. TRADE, FIGHT, BUILD, THINK in a living and breathing universe. A new plot and many additions to the open free-form gameplay.

X Rebirth Deep Silver (Egosoft)2013At least they changed the mission panel! And the messages have tags! :D

Now its a very playable game, easier to control, with an average difficult curve (not as stepped as previous games), and even prettier than before (specially planets, that feel enormous and look mesmerizing) Also, space highways and station/ship interiors are some of the new neat additions that makes it feel alive.

I miss the complexity of weapons and station systems, but its a little trade-off in comparation with the major improvements.

Endless Sky author2015Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series. Work your way up from a relatively wimpy shuttle, cargo ship, or fighter, to a highly upgraded and customized flagship or to a massive fleet of warships or freighters. Earn money by carrying passengers or cargo, escorting convoys, bounty hunting, or plundering and capturing enemy ships. Take sides in a civil war, or ignore the story line and just enjoy exploring the galaxy and blasting pirates.

The main story line takes about 8-16 hours to play through. The galaxy contains hundreds of star systems and planets, and several alien species with their own unique technologies. You can choose between more than fifty ships and several hundred ship upgrades. A plugin system allows anyone with a text editor and a paint program to create new ships, weapons, or missions, and the galaxy editor can be used to add new star systems and planets.

Endless Sky is free, open source, and cross platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux). Over time, the game universe will expand as contributors add new missions, story lines, alien species, places to explore, sound effects, and artwork.
