Xevious  Atari;Namco (Namco)1982Xevious contains a hidden developer message that is quite easy to find.
Start level one, then immediately fly to the right and push the Bomb button for a while. The message "NAMCO ORIGINAL program by EVEZOO" will appear at the bottom of the screen.***With the Solvalou spaceship you have to destroy all the flying enemies. Remember to avoid colliding with the black rotating monoliths.

Destroy ground objects using the bombs. Meet at the end of each stage the huge mother spaceship Andor Genesis. Destroy her dropping a bomb in its center.

Power Lords!  Philips1983As superhero Adam Power, you're the pilot of a space sled on patrol around the explosive Volcan Rock, an active volcano which frequently blows its top. And what better cover for the bad guys? Gryptogg, Raygoth and Arkus are perfecting their evil plans for a "gravitational ray" which basically amounts to a portable black hole - its gravity can alter the course of your space sled if you're on a direct horizontal line-of-sight with it.
Add to that meteors pummeling the ground from space and the enormous laser-eyed space serpent, and you've got your hands full just staying alive, let alone battling evil

Super Xevious Namco1984Difference from Xevious:
* Several new characters appear in the game including a silver-grey Galaxian flagships, a large jet, a small jet, a helicopter and a small tank. The Galaxians can be shot like any other enemy. The large jet which flies down cannot be shot or collide with the player ship and doesn't have any obvious purpose. The small jet, helicopter and tank (all of which are tan colored) can be picked up for bonus points but if shot will reset the score to zero !
* Gameplay is a bit more difficult.
* The hidden Sol Citadels are in different locations.***It's basically an expert course for veteran players, with much harder enemy patterns and some new enemies. Bringing the total characters to thirty two, the new entries are, for the most part, human vehicles such as planes or helicopters that you must try to 'rescue' for points, instead of shooting them. A couple of Galaxian aliens were added too.

Xevious Atari1984CX-5246. Prototype. North America NTSC.

Pilot your Solvalou in battle against 16 different types of Xevion enemies. Arial targets can be destroyed with your laser blaster. Ground targets with your photon bombs. Those crosshairs in fort of you are your photon targeting computer. They light up even if they cross an invisible ground target.
Toroid Fleet Ships will glide in from the side, fire, then retreat. Their slow
Torkan Scout Ships like the Toroid but faster and comes from multiple angles from the top of the screen
Zoshi Death Squads move erratically and you don't want them behind you.
Terazzi Deflector like the Torkan, but fires multiple shots.
Giddo Spario (Energy Blast) will make kamikaze attacks against you.
Mirrors (Bacura Shields) are indestructible kamikaze attackers.
Zakato Energy Launcher (Black Ball/8-balls) are teleported close to your ship by Andor Genesis just before he attacks. They explode as they fire their only shot at close range.
Andor Genesis pilots is the mothership ship. Armored and armed with four laser cannons. The only way to defeat Andor Genesis is with a direct hit on his ships rector core with a photon bomb (A small thermal exhaust port, right below the main port). Getting close enough to hit that spot is very dangerous. After striking the reactor core, Andor Genesis will retreat for repairs and will return with more 8-balls.
Grobda Tanks are smart, but harmless. They play dead on the ground until fired upon. Then they zip around out of range.
Logram Sphere Station are common, small, purplish ground structures. They will fire a quick bolt at you.
Boza Logram Dome Network are cross shaped ground structures, containing four Sphere Stations around the core. Shoot the core for maximum efficiency and points.
Derota Defense ground Stations fire a continuous stream of ammo. Shoot the core for maximum efficiency and points.
Garu Derota Mega Station work like the Derota Defense Stations but shoot double speed.
Barra Energy Station provide ground-based power for the Xevion assault fleet. They are defenseless and mostly harmless.
Zolbak Detector Domes are ground structures that are defenseless and mostly harmless.
Sol Citadels are hidden on the ground and can only be detected by your targeting computer. One bomb to wake it, another to destroy it.

[52]***Yes, Xevious is a classic arcade title of some fame. And it is a title released early in the Famicom era. But that shouldn't be an excuse for an overall unenjoyable gaming experience. Gameplay could be considered well done, since the controls are decent and the fact that you must throw bombs on ground targets gives the game a bit variety. But it is exactly the boringness and the non-variety of all the rest with the neverending flight over very plain ground with dull colors, shooting waves after waves of the same, bad looking flying enemies and ground targets that makes this game so inferior to nearly all shooters that would follow. The sound is especially annoying.***Players control their Solvalou ship and destroy the XEVIOUS forces. Fire the zapper missiles against air-based enemies and drop the blaster bombs down upon ground-based targets. Destroy Andor Genesis to earn bonus points. Unique enemies, interesting background music, a variety of vertically scrolling background environments and many hidden game play features differentiated Xevious from the other shooting games released at the time. Super Xevious: Ganpu no Nazo  Namco (Tose)1986***This game is several steps better than the original Xevious game, which I didn't really liked very much to be honest. Graphics are better and more varied as are the enemies. Each stage repeats indefinitely until a certain winning condition is met. That could be flying at a certain spot or shooting/bombing certain enemies. An interesting concept, but not perfectly implemented, because it is very often not possible to guess right away what has to be done to finish the level. That and the again really horrible ingame music (except in the last two stages, which have actual melodies) are the negative points of an otherwise nice new interpretation of a classic shooting game. Xevious  Namco1990The Xevious Famicom Disk System version could only be obtained via the Disk Writer method where you bought an empty disk and could copy a game for a small fee at certain copy stations/kiosks. The game is identical to the cartridge version with the exception of different copyright dates on the title screen. In the six years that lay between the cartridge and disk versions much happened in the video game industry. Sure, the disk version was much cheaper and the gameplay has the same classic feel to it but in 1990 this game already must have been mostly played out of nostalgic feelings I would guess.***Players control their Solvalou ship and destroy the XEVIOUS forces. Alien Carnage  Apogee (Interactive Binary Illusions;SubZero Software)1993Earth is on the verge of a takeover by aliens intent on turning humans into mindless slave zombies, who can be used in their conquest of the universe. Harry's called into action to Space Station Liberty and given orders to penetrate the alien ship which has burrowed itself under a high-rise city.

In addition to the flamethrower, Harry can use weapon dispensers, giving him access to weapons like the photon cannon, guided missiles, grenades, shields, micro nukes, and the very powerful Omega bomb. It's an arsenal that will have the aliens shakin' in their slimy shoes.

Secret of Evermore Square1995Late in the game the hero fights a boss named Coleoptera which is a palette swap of the first boss Thraxx (see the package shot for a drawing of that boss). Thraxx is probably a corruption of the word thorax, whereas Coleoptera is the scientific name of the order of beetles. The boss that goes by that name bears however no resemblance to a beetle at all. The literal meaning of the word Coleoptera does not make much sense either, as "coleo" comes from ancient greek κολεός (koleos) which means sheath and "ptera" from πτερόν (pteron) which means wing, referring to the chitinized front wings (elytra) which are characteristic for beetles and serve as a protection ("sheath") for the hind wings. Coleoptera from Secret of Evermore has no wings however.***When waiting a long time on the "The End" screen another screen appears which credits Brian Fehdrau for Dolly Grip. In movie production the Dolly Grip is responsible for operating the camera dolly. Brian Fehdrau revealed that he added that message for his wife Dolly.***In Dr. Sidney Ruttleberg's old, decaying mansion, a boy and his dog stumble upon a mysterious machine. By sheer accident they are propelled into Evermore, a one-time utopia that now has become a confounding and deadly world. A world of prehistoric jungles, ancient civilizations, medieval kingdoms and futuristic cities. During his odyssey, the boy must master a variety of weapons, learn to harness the forces of alchemy, and make powerful allies to battle Evermore's diabolical monsters. What's more, his dog masters shape-changing to aid the quest. But even if they can muster enough skill and courage, even if they can uncover the mysterious clues, they can only find their way home by discovering the Secret of Evermore.***

[27]***video games — the world of Evermore was originally a "video game" itself, but something apparently went wrong and became a reality of its own (based on the description in Wikipedia)***Secret of Evermore has a really involving story but is definitely directed towards a younger audience. The gameplay is almost completely the same as the Secret of Mana series, but the one thing that truly stands out about this game is the Alchemy system in which the spells you learn take ingredients for you to cast them, making the challenge level a lot better than games like FF3, where your characters basically become gods(at least in my opinion).***Decent RPG. Ultima IX: Ascension  Origin;Electronic Arts (Origin)1999Ultima IX is best enjoyed following a neurolyser flash to forget the existance of every other game in the Ultima series (except maybe the Runes sub-series). And a second neurolyser flash afterwards to forget the bugs.***The tag note now claims this is conclusion to the UW series, but isn't this rather a conclusion to the Age of Armageddon sub-series? In all regards this seems unrelated to UW.***The Dragon Edition was a collectors pack containing the 2 Game CDs plus The [game=Ultima Collection]Ultima Collection[/game] CD (the 1st 8 Ultimas), 8 virtue cards, an Ankh pendant, an Ascension poster, a cloth map, a leather Game Journal, a leather Book of Magic (animals were sacrificed for this entertainment), a certification from Lord British, and an Ultima Collection reference card. Believe it or not, this is intended to be the finale of the Ultima series. Officially, the 3rd game of the Age of Armageddon trilogy which is the 3rd age, and the 3rd game of Ultima Underworld series. Fans who have been paying close attention would have noted some requirements in prophecy doled out in the previous games. Players will not find the vast majority of these prophecies fulfilled in this game. It is not a spoiler to say ascendancy occurs, the game makes it obvious in title, box art, and in-game, from the very beginning. The Ultima universe is a different one from ours where the protagonist is from Earth. The protagonist, sort of, fulfills his roles in this game that were set when Lord British chose him in Ultima IV to become the Avatar. It is blatently shown that
the Guarding
is indestructible which had been alluded to in the earlier games. Pirates play an important role in the main plot and several side-quests and plots. But, officially, it is set in the Ultima universe and ends the Age of Armageddon. The setting is consistent with a late medieval-theme. Cannons, machines, weapons, ship technology and the artwork in the game place it on the cusp of a Renaissance-theme; but does not quite qualify. Archery of a sort occurs. This game was originally designed for Voodoo Graphics/3Dfx cards, which utilized the Glide3D API. The released game also contained various options to use DirectX technologies. The Direct3D option was barely passable. Official patches brought the requirement of DirectX 6. An unofficial patch from members of the development team require DirectX 7. There are people being held prisoner,
the Avatar
at one point. The ever present Rule Britannia music accompanies Lord British's castle. Widescreen is not officially supported but the config file allows the horizontal and vertical resolution to be manually specified. So if the provided numbers match a resolution supported by your card and monitor, it works. Although to wide an aspect will cause controls for inventory and books to be off-screen. It supports vertical screen in this way also. It does not support alternate projections (anamorphic), so if your monitor projects the given mode anamorphicly, the image will be distorted the same.
