Direct3D source code can automatically be converted to open source compatible gaming libraries using the freely available hlslparser.
Any platform or software using the Gallium driver can use DirectX calls without the need to translate to OpenGL. This means Windows games do not need to be changed to OpenGL when ported.
When developers don't use Gallium but state that some version of DirectX is required to play their game native game on GNU/Linux; what they meant to say was, "We are clueless and don't care" [paraphrased]
