Eternal War: Nightmares XrucifiX?There was a demo for this back in late 1990s, released as a Quake 1 total conversion (it also required a copy of Quake to work) when the Q1 modding was on full roll. As far as I could tell, the development had ceased for some reason.***This time you've been sent to help Kaleb, an trouble teen who slipped into insanity. You must enter his mind and battle the demons encamped there to restore Kaleb's insanity.***The target market for Eternal War will be adults specifically, we deal with a lot of heavy topics and keep real to the subject matter. labelimagesubject
Doom95 Microsoft (id Software)1996This is the Windows 95 version of DOOM. It comes as shareware mainly. Although it was sold in some retail packages. If you own any full version of DOOM, you can run it with the Doom95 executable. It also works with all doom wad files.

Gabe Newell was shocked that Doom was the number one software in use and Windows was the second most used. He was frustrated by the "common wisdom" that good games could not be made for Windows. Wanting to show that Windows games could be better than NES, he contacted John Carmack about porting Doom to Windows and said "Hey, we'll do this for free". In 2013 Newell adopted a similar attitude toward Windows 8 vs Linux.

The game does not install on NT versions of Windows such as Windows 2000 and later. You can circumvent this easily just by copying the MAGESLAY folder from CD to where-ever you would've installed the game otherwise, it requires nothing more spectacular than that.***MageSlayer was developed by Raven Software from 1996 - 1997 and published by GT Interactive for the PC. Utilizing the same Vampire engine as Take No Prisoners, MageSlayer was Raven's tribute to top-down action games.

The MageSlayer engine utilized Direct 3D to supported most 3D accelerator cards on the market at the time in order to offer superior graphics quality and other features like colored lighting. All of the levels for MageSlayer were created using 3D Studio Max along with several plugins that were custom-written for in house use to make texturing and scripting much easier than it had been in the past.

In addition to a single player experience that featured four character classes, five worlds and thirty levels, MageSlayer also featured solid multiplayer game modes for up to sixteen players. MageSlayer marked another Raven Software collaboration with the fantasy artist Brom, who did the box cover artwork for the title.

Powered by the Quake engine, HeXen II was developed from 1996 to 1997 on a brutal production schedule, published by Id Software and distributed by Activision Inc.

One of the most highly anticipated releases of 1997, HeXen II was the first game from an outside developer to ship with Quake engine technology. The game featured four single player hubs and deathmatch capabilities for 16 players while simultaneously offering four character classes, each with four weapons with dual fire modes for a total of 32 unique weapon effects. In addition, HeXen II was the first 3-D shooter to feature transparent water effects in both hardware and software rendering modes and one of the only fully 3-D games to feature single player cooperative gameplay.

HeXen II was a smash hit for Raven Software and was revered by many as one of the most artistically beautiful computer games ever made.
[Raven]***this is the only game aside from Quake that I know of that uses Quake 1's engine. It is a very worthy sequil of the original Hexen. This one takes you to yet another world to battle the third and final Serpent Rider as one of four heros (Paladin, Crusader, Assassin or Necromancer). The graphics are wonderful, espically the use of colors and the amazingly detailed maps. This is the game Quake should have been.

--- notes
religion-christian --- the most I can gather from this game is that there's a single god who sends out Bob the cherub down to Earth to fix things because satan or some other evil devil/demon is messing things up. This seems to be more as punishment for Bob than actually to save Earth. The focus of the game is humor, however, so the religious content may be only superficial.***Sex, Religion, Possession, Death

Bob is the scum of the Heavens, an angel in name only. He's been asked by the `Big Man´ Himself to rub out those "Screw Ups down on Earth". He has the power to possess anyone and use sinners to slay sinners. He can enter over 40 characters and control them to mutilate, sneak, impale, charm and creatively wipe out other vermin, but it takes cunning to decide who to possess...

* As Bob, you can possess and control any of the over 40 characters, including: Prostitutes, cops, behemoths, priests, bouncers, sub girls, bondage dancers, gigolos, demons, chots, welders, nuclear workers, medics, bartenders, dwarves, pimps, monsters, animals and much more!

* Over 10 different weapons, including: rocket propelled harpoons, needle guns, rocket launchers, flame throwers, grenades, stun guns.

* Use enemies as weapons.

* All characters have real skin covering their bones, resulting in skin that jiggles and stretches in all the right places.

[Blizzard]***If you're even thinking about buying Diablo 2, then say goodbye to family, friends, and your job. Run away to Mexico if you have to, because Diablo 2 is too good. It's one of those games that keep you awake at night. It makes you think about gold and magic items while your working. You'll miss entire meals for this game. It's so good it's scary.
That's right, folks, evil is back, and badder than ever. Your job, again, is to stop evil from destroying the world. You do it by hacking millions of demons and goblins to pieces, gaining experience, and finding magical items. Basically, this is the formula for the entire game, and it's more fun than should be allowed by law.

Gothic  Egmont Interactive;Xicat Interactive (Piranha Bytes)2001This nice German developed RPG adventure is set against the backdrop of a landscape savaged by war, the King of the human territories must find enough ore to forge weapons for his army to use in defence against the Orc Hordes. The King's mines are set in a large magical sphere and are worked by prisoners captured from across the kingdom. And it is into this sphere that you are thrown, charged with the task of delivering a letter – a letter that might just mark the turning point in the war against the Orcs. The Gothic world is constantly changing and evolving: events will occur that can alter the relationships between several groups of characters. NPCs are fully rounded with their own daily habits and relationships: they get up, work, go to bed, chat with each other and so on. More significantly, monsters cooperate with each other and are able to figure things out; they have individual perception. Some can be lured with food or noise, some will run away from bright light. Some can only hear or detect movement. Each character has the ability, with the correct training, to improve particular skills as the game progresses: training with the master of the sword, for example, will result in a character displaying noticeably more skilled swordsmanship. It is so much more satisfying to witness the effect of the skills you have learnt when they are visible in your character as oppose to a meaningless number rating, improving say, from 8 to 10. These 'optical' improvements are for the whole range of skills included in Gothic. The two different classes of magic (which are absolutely independent from each other) work along the same lines.***

"A Summoner's inheritance is a power greater than magic. With rings of channeling, Summoners call forth demons and golems, supernatural servants and elemental creatures. Summoners have toppled empires and challenged gods. They are venerated as saviors and feared as destroyers. The chosen are born with a mark on one hand, but the origins of this gift were forgotten long ago.
Joseph fears his power more than death itself. As a child, Joseph tried to save his village from attackers, but the demon he summoned slaughtered the villagers while Joseph watched in horror, his misguided heroics causing the deaths of those he loved. Exiled and ostracized, Joseph vowed never to summon again.

Over the years, the enigmatic Yago counsels and guides the youth, preparing Joseph to fulfil his prophecy. As the invading armies of Orenia march across the Medevan plain, Yago urges Joseph to quest for the ancient rings. Reluctantly, Joseph agrees.

On his journey, Joseph meets three young adventurers who become his companions-Flece, Jekhar, and Rosalind. Flece is a cunning thief and cynical rogue who grew up on the streets of Lenele. Jekhar's family perished when Joseph summoned a demon long ago, and now the warrior seeks revenge. Begrudgingly, he helps Joseph on his quest. Rosalind is novice of the Order of Iona and yearns to become a mage-priest and guardian of Iona's divine scrolls. The daughter of Yago, Rosalind is jealous of Joseph's power and hates her father for devoting his life to the Summoner’s cause.

Their quest takes them across the world-to the sunken empire of Ikaemos and the rugged wilds of Liangshan, from the stronghold of the Khosani to the Jade River that flows from Heaven. In the ruins of lost civilizations and the temples of Orenia, they search for the Summoners' rings."

The I of the Dragon  Strategy First;Akella;TopWare Interactive (Primal Software)20022002-01-12 – Original Russian release
2004-03-10 – English release? by TopWare***About widescreen support:
The game unfortunately fails to start after you set a wide resolution, but you can get past this by deleting (or renaming) the Intro.avi in Data/Video/English/ folder or similar path in case of other languages.***The I of the Dragon is the unique Action-RPG where you control not just a puny magician or a stupid barbarian, but a dragon, a huge, powerful magical beast. It starts young and relatively weak, but it grows and learns as the game progresses. 12 huge levels (tens of square kilometers each) hold huge hordes of enemies - more than 40 kinds of evil monsters. You'll help humans to cleanse their land and restore peace, and they'll help you back with new magic spells and their fighting abilities.

Advanced graphics engine created by Primal Software for this game allows us to show huge battles with tens of enemies and humans. Even beautiful special effects are not just eye candy - they drive the gameplay (for example, our terramorphing can change the landscape, raise mountains and fiery volcanoes or create huge ravines that monsters can not cross), change it (day and night cycle changes your fighting tactics), etc.

Highlights:
* A mystical land filled with magical creatures is your playground. And this time you are a not some puny magician, or a stupid barbarian. You are a Dragon! A power to be reckoned with... Fly with the wind. Protect the people, fight the monsters, set fire to forests, level entire mountain ranges!
* Huge levels: each one has tens of square kilometers full of rolling hills, mountains, dense highly-polygonal forests, stones, buildings and other objects
* Real-time terramorphing lets you level down whole mountain ranges and raise new ones instead. Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Craters - you call the shots
* Time of the day with smooth real-time lightmap blending - watch magnificent sunsets and don't forget to look up at five thousands of stars visible during the night. Try to find some familiar constellations
* Three dragons available, each with its own inherent abilities (fire, acid and ice based) and different set of stats which greatly increase replayability value. Make a "fighter"-type dragon, a "mage" or a "sniper" to suit your tastes - possibilities are endless
* Of course, some different kinds of magic are there, so you won't be limited to throwing flame at monsters. Freeze them, tamper with their minds, summon familiars, heal friendly monsters that citizens tamed, learn to locate important objects or teleport to them directly - there are more than sixty spells with breathtaking special effects for each one

Arx Fatalis  JoWood Productions (Arkane Studios)2002Cast away from the surface of the Earth by the disappearance of the sun, Mankind lived hidden underground in the Fortress of Arx. Humans only have magic left to survive against Ratmen, Dragons and starvation...

But a much greater danger is hovering above the world of Arx Fatalis. Lurking in the eternal darkness of the mines, it feeds off the innocent souls of the city. It is not a monster. It is not human. It is pure evil.

The adventure has just started, and soon,
the fate of Arx, will be in your hands.

Arx Fatalis is a medieval heroic fantasy first person role playing game which places the accent on immersion, storyline and innovative magic system.

Arx Fatalis is intended for RPG and adventure players.

Dive into the universe of Arx

Arx Fatalis is an RPG that thrusts the player into an extremely complex fantastic world. Arx Fatalis combines a rich storyline with impressive medieval settings. The easy to use interface results in maximum interaction. The player is in an intense immersion state where he can feel how each one of his actions affects the surrounding world. The goal of the game is to reduce to nothing the cult of Akbaa, God of destruction and Chaos, and thus, prevent him from returning to the physical world. If the player fails, the demon will crush Arx under its rule of blood and terror.

The player, assuming the role of potential hero, fights in a large underground fortress, with wood clubs, swords, lances. and many magic artifacts, against the threat of multiple underground creatures (Goblins, Trolls, Ratmen and other vicious creatures.)

But rough power is not always the best road to victory. The hero may also use the new "screen magic" to advance. By using the mouse, magic runes have to be drawn and combined on screen in order to create powerful spells that will protect the player or give him the strength to defeat his enemies and to complete his quest.

In addition to the fight against demons and monsters, there is also a practically infinite number of interactions with the creatures and objects in the fortress, which enable the player to regain his memory, solve enigmas, and fulfill quests. By accumulating experience points, the player is able to lead his hero and train him any way he wants.

Dare to enter the world of Arx Fatalis. Explore the underground cities, secret temples, ancient mine tunnels, discover forgotten civilizations and dominate the magic of Arx Fatalis...***The game may suffer from severe flickering and depth buffer issues under some circumstances. The actual cause is unknown as it fixed itself and I failed to reproduce it.

Bumb mapping used by the game is one of the earliest methods and causes some graphical glitching on at least NV's GPUs (buttons and doorways otherwise revealed by sufficiently high intuition are colored almost pitch black). Therefore it is recommended you disable it.

Forcing anti-aliasing causes some text to disappear, the game itself has no anti-aliasing options so this is only reminder not to do it in externally.***Minimum:

Archangel Fishtank Interactive (Metropolis Software House)2002Archangel is set in a dark and atmospheric world, where players discover that Michael Travinsky (an innocent family man) has been tragically killed in a horrific car crash. The Lord of Light resurrects Travinsky, as he believes that Travinsky is the next Chosen One and that only he can save the world from a deadly evil that looms in the shape of vicious demons and ghosts. The presence of these demons is growing, but humans continue to be utterly oblivious to their existence and to their own impending doom. The player is thrust into the center of the action as they guide Travinsky through three violent epochs: Medieval, Futuristic and The Forgotten Place. Throughout these epochs, Travinsky must hunt and destroy the evil demons, who are dead set on wiping out the human race forever. Even with a huge arsenal of close combat, mid- and long-range weapons at his disposal, Travinsky has only a small chance of achieving his goal, as many of the Chosen Ones have gone before him and all have died in past encounters with the powerful and numerous foes. Gamers must therefore use the right combination of skill, strength and bravery if they are to help Travinsky save mankind. Along the way players do receive a little help. As players complete each mission or kill enemies, they collect Essence that can then be used to upgrade weapons or enhance their skills. This also has a direct impact upon the way NPCs interact with Travinsky.***- Archangel - the new exiting Action RPG from Metropolis Software.

Personally I think the game is quite good, and the major criticism from others seems to have been about the extremely dark setting (lack of lighting), but how many horror games do you see in brightly lit environs that still manage to scare you? I doubt any. Creep you out by weirdness, perhaps, but not scare you.

The only gripe I have about the game is that it relies all too much on scripted sequences to scare you, and the mob A.I. seems to be a bit too straightforward to give much challenge as it's quite easy to figure out and once that's done, most situations are ridiculously easy to handle, especially with the virtually infinite ammo you have (not that that's much a surprise as the place _is_ weapons research and manufacturing facility on top of everything else).***Minimum:
