If the grid is small enough, it may become excessively hard to see it. For example, if basic human occupies 3x3 points, even the slightest movement might be hard to notice to be limited to a grid (especially if the movement is smoothed with animation).

This tag should not be used for per-pixel grids as they're indistinguishable from gridless implementations (by players, the software behind them is still different).

This tag is usable regardless of the grid shape, though square and likely hex grids are the most common.
