Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings  Microsoft (Ensemble Studios)1999In Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, the player takes control of one of thirteen civilizations, including the Chinese, Goths, Britons, and Vikings, among others. The player starts with a handful of villagers, through expansion and careful handling of the economy, the player can advance up to the point where powerful war machines and well trained masses of troops will be the player's to make and control.

There are three distinct ways to play, one of which the object is to hunt and kill the other player(s) king, however there are a lot of options for each, anywhere from what type of map to start on (including coastal, gold rush, arabia, and rivers) to what the maximum amount of units are allowed.

The player can also play online at the Zone vs. up to seven other players, or via a TCP/IP connection.***

American McGee's Alice  Electronic Arts (Rogue Entertainment)2000Lewis Carroll's 19th-century fantasy has been reinvented many times, most famously by Walt Disney. And now American McGee, one of the designers behind the Quake and Doom series, issues his addition to the Looking Glass legends with American McGee's Alice. Players take on the role of a wiser, more industrious heroine who sets out in this third-person 3-D action game to free Wonderland from the tyranny of the Queen of Hearts. Alice will confront a host of weird creatures in surreal settings and solve numerous puzzles through more than 15 levels of gameplay.***stock sounds — at least one is heard in an early surreal level where a huge door frame passes around the level (it does this pass repeatedly), the sound is played during the pass.***May (quite likely actually) fail to start up on XP and newer operating systems (as it does for me), but works fine after you use a No-CD crack. This game takes strategy to new depths as elves, beasts, knights, and creatures of the darkness are locked in an epic battle for survival.

In the world of Exigo, where peace and prosperity have reigned for years, the empires of man and beast faces their greatest threat yet. A sinister force known as The Fallen has awaken to strike where the inhabitants of this world least expect - from underground.

Users will take control of massive armies, wage wars in the forests and river valleys of the surface, then descend into the caverns and catacombs of the underworld to face off against the dark evil.

Armies on all sides will have the ability to delve deep underground to travel unseen by foes or borrow up to the surface to unleash powerful attacks on unsuspecting enemies. The gamer must devise never before deployed strategies for combat and defense as attacks can come from all directions.

Conquer as the heavily fortified Empire and control an army of knights, dwarves, elves and gnomes. Ravage the plains with the nomadic Beasts, leading tribes of ogres, trolls and other fantastic creatures. Emerge from deep to consume the world of light with The Fallen – a powerful force of dark elves, fallen warriors, swarming insects and other horrific creatures of the dark.

Engage in an epic three-part single player campaign and save the world of Exigo from the evil that threatens to plunge the world into darkness. Or go online for massive multiplayer skirmishes with up to eight players striving to conquer the surface and underworld. Success can only be achieved through a balance of military might and strategic alliances.

For Desmond, this is the life of Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad (الطائر), an assassin who lived during the Third Crusade in 1191. Although the story skips the kidnapping and starts with Desmond jagged into the Animus and experiencing some synchronization issues with it.

The game is difficult to categorize and abundantly lampshaded by the fact that most of the game takes place inside the Animus which has been created to produce a video game like experience, so effectively you're playing a video game inside a video game. And the experience produced by the Animus is an abstraction of sorts with various alterations that make it easier for the user to operate it, such as translating all languages to plain English and so forth. So any inconsistencies with reality are due to that, and since memories aren't exactly logical 1 to 1 copies of reality, much illogical instances can occur, some of which can be interpreted to mean some very strange things.

Things you may need to replay the whole game for:
In memory block 4, you have a chance to pickpocket Vidic to get his security pen. This opportunity does not represent itself and replaying the memory block later does not roll back time in the "real world".

After the credits you gain access to the conference room where you need Vidic's pen to access a computer, but there's nothing else after that besides your ability to replay the memory blocks and aim for 100% completion (collecting all the flags, killing the templars, scouting, and doing all the side tasks).
***Minimum:

[12]***If the idea of good game is to have inconsistent controls for the same action in different situations (right click works to remove all other items from build queue except the last, which you can only remove by the minus key in keyboard, not the numpad minus mind you... delete would've made more sense and it's actually more commonly used in other games) and forcing the player to choose an action from "help" dialog instead of ignoring it (I suggest you disable the advisor pop-ups which are on by default, since you must take the advice), then Civ4 is truly master of it. I can't imagine what drove them to so brilliantly disregard simple user friendliness. Mostly it works well, though, at least if you can ignore the problems it has. For me, these are aggravating shortcomings in the simplest things a game of this kind can have are too much. Unfortunately they're present in the final patch and Warlords/BtS expansions as well, so maybe I'm alone in this grievance for surely it would've been fixed otherwise.***Has been released on both 2 CDs and 1 DVD at some point.

Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword  2K Games;Valve (Firaxis Games)2007Sid Meier's Civilization IV : Beyond the Sword is the second expansion pack for Civilization IV - the 2005 PC Game of the Year that has become a worldwide hit. The expansion focuses on the time periods after the invention of gunpowder and delivers 11 unique and challenging scenarios created by the development team at Firaxis as well as esteemed members of the Civ Community. Civ IV: Beyond the Sword also includes ten new civilizations, sixteen new leaders, five new wonders, and a variety of new units that offer even more fun and exciting ways for players to expand their civilization's power as they strive for world domination.

* Expanded Epic Game: Adds a massive increase of new units, buildings, and technologies to the epic game with a tremendous amount of effort focused on the late game.
* New Game Scenarios: 11 new scenarios custom-designed by the team at Firaxis and some members of the Civ Fan Community.
* New Civilizations: 10 new civilizations, such as Portugal, Babylonians, and Netherlands and their associated unique units and buildings.
* More Civilization Leaders: Sixteen new leaders, both for the new civilizations as well as additional leaders for existing civilizations, including Hammurabi of the Babylonians, Abraham Lincoln of the United States, and Sitting Bull of the Native Americans.
* Corporations: A new game feature similar to religion allows players to found companies and spread them throughout the world. Each corporation provides benefits in exchange for certain resources.
* Espionage: Now available earlier in the game, this feature offers players many new ways to spy on opponents, stir citizen unrest and defend government secrets.
* Events: New random events - such as natural disasters and pleas for help or demands from their citizens - challenge players with obstacles that must be overcome for their civilization to prosper.
* New Wonders: Five new wonders await discovery, including the Statue of Zeus, Cristo Redentor, the Shwedagon Paya, and the Mausoleum of Maussollos.
* Expanded Space Victory: Winning the race to Alpha Centauri will now require more strategic planning and tactical decision making.
* Apostolic Palace: The United Nations is available earlier in the game, providing a way to win a diplomatic victory earlier. In addition, new resolutions expand the available diplomatic options.
* Advanced Starts: A major fan request, this new feature enables players to "buy" components of a custom-tailored empire and begin play in the later part of the game, allowing one to experience many of the new features of the expansion in a shorter amount of time.
* Advanced AI: The greatly-enhanced AI now relies more on smart play and less on handicap bonuses to remain competitive, providing a more consistent challenge throughout the course of the game, both economically and militarily. The ways in which the AI attempt to achieve victory have also been expanded.

Cold Fear Ubisoft Entertainment (Darkworks)2005There's only two things I dislike about this game. For one, being able to carry every single weapon found. This is supposed to be survival horror, you know. For second, the boss battle. I can't remember playing more aggravating boss battle than this on PC (console gamers seem to love these insanely overpowered bosses as they're so damn common on them). Way overpowered compared to anything else met and nothing prepares you for it. Finally used a trainer to get through it because the game was sitting at the final battle for over a month (probably one fourth of the game can be played in the same amount of time I invested solely on the boss battle).
Effectively you have to shoot the boss until he turns his attention to you, dodge the charge he makes either left or right, by staring at him in the aim view until he raises either of his arms to strike (so you know which side to dodge to), and repeat this until Anna escapes (which takes some 5+ charges). After this you have to wait for him to charge, dodge that, and then run back in front of him so he can grab you - YES! you have to intentionally let him grab you here. And then hit action button to get released. After you do this the third time, you can shoot him in the face. This has to be repeated about 3 times in total, so that's surviving about 9 more charges while managing to let him grab you. You don't have any healing items and you die on the third charge you fail to dodge. There's also the fact that the only way to dodge the boss is to stare down at him until he raises either of his arms (lest you wish to rely on luck as there's no pattern) and then swivel quickly to the opposite side, release aim and run. There's probably less than a second for you to do this, so imagine repeating this sequence few times, dying at the final part several dozen times because you can't do it fast enough, and that's pretty much it for playing this game through without cheating.
Command & Conquer: Generals Electronic Arts (EA Pacific)2003A new chapter in the Command & Conquer universe, set somewhere in the 2020s, pits three sides for global domination: the United States of America, the People's Republic of China and the Global Liberation Army (GLA).

Generals features real world (renamed or slightly altered) weapons combined with quasi-high-tech ones, new control schemes and a fast-paced multiplayer. Generals is the first game in the Command & Conquer series not to include FMV or pre-rendered cutscenes between missions, and was also the first C&C game without the Westwood Studios label (although the development studio was initially called Westwood Pacific before being merged into EA Pacific). It uses a full 3D environment powered by the SAGE engine, a modified version of the W3D engine previously seen in C&C: Renegade.

The core gameplay differs somewhat from other games in the series, a move done in order to modernize the formula. First off, construction yards are absent, as structures are built by dozers for the USA and China, and workers for the GLA. The sidebar is replaced with the bottom bar, and support powers are "purchased" with leveling up as a general, which is done through participating in combat. For the first time in the series, each factory-type structure (barracks, war factory, airfield...) has its own build queue, in the same fashion as in Blizzard's RTS titles before it, instead of having a shared one like in the previous C&C games. Upgrades are available for the first time in the series as well, bringing improvements to units and structures. Everything is paid for in advance instead of having credits slowly drain as the object is constructed.***

Command & Conquer: Renegade Electronic Arts (Westwood Pacific)2002Command & Conquer: Renegade is a first-person 3D shooter set in the Command & Conquer universe. Game progression is mission-driven; most missions have primary, secondary, and tertiary objectives. A few drive able vehicles are available. Though the gameplay does not deviate from traditional FPS formula, scripted events and some of the mission objectives share common themes and features with the real-time strategy games of the series. The multiplayer emulates RTS gameplay to a larger extent, putting players in control of either GDI or the Brotherhood forces, and requiring them to harvest tiberium in order to upgrade the armies.***

Personally I think the game is quite good, and the major criticism from others seems to have been about the extremely dark setting (lack of lighting), but how many horror games do you see in brightly lit environs that still manage to scare you? I doubt any. Creep you out by weirdness, perhaps, but not scare you.

The only gripe I have about the game is that it relies all too much on scripted sequences to scare you, and the mob A.I. seems to be a bit too straightforward to give much challenge as it's quite easy to figure out and once that's done, most situations are ridiculously easy to handle, especially with the virtually infinite ammo you have (not that that's much a surprise as the place _is_ weapons research and manufacturing facility on top of everything else).***Minimum:

Dragonshard  Atari (Liquid Entertainment)2005Latest version: 1.2.1 (as of 2006-02?), 1.2.1b for US version***Dragonshard is a real-time strategy experience based in the mystical world of Eberron, the acclaimed new DUNGEONS & DRAGONS realm. Within this wholly imaginative setting lives an inventive gameplay fusion: dramatic RTS play is affected by the risks and rewards of a thrilling RPG-styled underworld. As players direct troops over the land, they also plunge smaller, hero-led parties below ground to an RPG-modeled world of beasts, battles and bounty. Experience and items gained in this underworld result in great powers and abilities above ground. Using magic, weaponry and skilled maneuvers, players command armies from varying races to control, protect - or destroy - the powerful Heart of Siberys. Obtaining this omnipotent artifact will unleash its full forces, good or evil, upon the entire world.

"Dragonshard is deliberately designed to do away with such slow-paced genre tropes in favour of spectacular action and a seamless, involving world."

[12]***It is my sad duty to inform visitors that this game and it's demo is bundled with spyware. Use with caution. Also their is some sort of copy protection on CD1 that I cannot identify that prevents the game from running without the constant presence of the CD.

Several free enhancement packs are available for download. In addition to the demo, there is a Silver Edition (spyware included) available for download that allows for multiplayer games. The game is packaged with 7 Silver Edition licenses for the buyer to give to friends or deploy on a network.

The game is available in various packages that include a free bible, a free paperback Left Behind novel, a sponsor a child offer, and/or a tech support info card.

Killing enemies is not ideal, converting them is immediately twice as beneficial plus they become a resource for future use.

Requirements:
Windows XP SP1, DirectX 9.0c, Pentium IV 2.0z CPU, 512MB RAM, 4GB HD (minimum), 8x CD drive, GeForce 4 MX440*, DirectX 9.0c soundcard, keyboard, mouse, full system administration privileges, system reconfiguration, updated drivers.
For 1-2 player games:
56k modem or better
For upt to 8 players:
TCP/IP LAN or internet connection at 256k or faster speed.

*officially GeForce only, any 32MB DirectX 9.0c 3D card might work but expect problems. Some official sources say an ATI Radeon 8500 or better will work also.

This is a tie-in to the left behind series of books (though not directly based on any?). In addition, the game is based on an interpretation of the Book of Revelations in The Bible that is generally accepted by many, but certainly not all, protestant Christians. The the official Catholic interpretation is emphatic that the Book of Revelations is "to be understood symbolically and not literally" and this view he held by others within all branches of Christian faiths.
