This is the most realistic method, but may limit player's choices in when to pick up certain items as the pick up routine may be very rigid. In reality it should be able to pick up items on the floor or on a table while running with some twisting and turning, but game makers have had trouble merging such complex actions into gameplay. However, any problems with this seem to be disappearing, though not everyone bothers with it.
In terms of turn-based systems, this does progress time.
