Presented as a lower CPU overhead competitor for DirectX and OpenGL, to be released as an open standard once the API is finalized that GPU developers can make their own drivers for much like with DirectX and OpenGL.

Integrated support for this is present at least in Frostbite 3 engine.

In response DirectX and OpenGL developers have taken steps to improve their APIs to allow similar performance benefits in theirs (DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.5 [via Direct State Access] respectively) by reducing the main CPU overhead. Some GPU developers (notably Nvidia) have similarly taken steps to improve their drivers for other APIs to give performance benefits for even already existing titles in order to compete.
