He must grow the only cure for the FuzzBomb, crytals, that replicate only when laid still outdoors. Since they cure the infected (FuzzBodies), they extremely valuable to the average citizen that does not want to be infected. They are likely to be stolen while replicating. If a citizen or Agent USA are holding crystals when touched by a FuzzBody, a crystal is destroyed rather getting the infection. Agent USA can block or push citizens to protect his crystal farm. Additionally, a FuzzBody is cured and becomes a normal citizen if they touch (and break) a crystal. Agent USA will be traveling the US via trains. Fuzzbodies will be spreading the infection in the mean time. And the original FuzzBomb is located in one of the infected cities. The ultimate goal is to find the source, the original FuzzBomb, and drop 100 crystals on it.

This is an edutainment game that introduces train scheduling, ticket buying, geography, time zones, and epidemic spread.

Uses the AD&D ruleset. is set in Forgotten realms where Baldur's Gate is a location. This game begins the Baldur's Gate series. Players can create and name Human, Elf, Dwarf, Half-Elf, Halfling, and Gnome characters of either gender of the Fighter, Mage, Thief, Cleric, Ranger, Druid, or Paladin classes. Some classes can engage in sorcery according to the AD&D ruleset. Players can also dual-class or multi-class according the AD&D ruleset. In a 1-player game, the player controls an entire party, in multiplayer games, each player can control one or more characters (or none at all). Players must cooperate, there is no competitive options in the game. There are multiple ways for a character to summon underlings for temporary help. Characters must sleep or suffer the effects of fatigued. Characters can also become poisoned, confused,charmed, enfeebled, paralyzed, turned to stone, encumbered, impaired, or drunk if the character does avoid situations that lead to such effects. The detail of the fantasy world this game takes place in seems to qualify it as belonging to the high fantasy genre. Characters can use bows, crossbows, slings, knives, swords, axes, bludgeons, pole arms, whips, or fight unarmed (non-lethal). A vast number of items can be aquired from stashes in the world, on defeated foes, or purchased from shops or individuals. The AI of the player's characters can be programmed in a scriptable language. The graphics are nice, the music is good and the game is huge. The game has major flaws however. Some of them are not uncommon for an early NES game. Many necessary items are very well hidden in non-obvious spots. The difficulty level is too high. In this game the beginning is even the hardest part of the game. Being badly equipped you have barely a chance againts the many monsters. Sometimes when you run over a certain spot you are teleported into a dungeon. And you cannot immediately leave the dungeon, until you find the exit. Making things worse, the dungeons are huge 16x16 screen mazes with many difficult monsters. And only in these dungeons you can find shops where you can buy some better equipment to survive the final seven towers where seven bells are hidden, which you must find and destroy in order to challenge the end boss. Now with a walkthrough and cheat at hand I could avoid the biggest frustration, but I understand people who say that this game is a game design disaster.***"Mashou" is used in official documentation.

Mashō literally means "Evil Bell" an is a pun of 魔性 which means meaning "devilishness." It was supposed to be titled "Hell's Bells," in English but this title qualified for Nintendo's unwritten censorship rules. Oddly, there are Holy Crosses shown all through the game and the game is pretty blatant that God himself has personally asked the game's protagonists to complete this quest.

This game has a very long crawl screen of text. Possibly the longest crawl of any game previous and I can't think of a longer since. The text mentions that the castle explored in the game is actually under construction. This can thinly justify the level structure.

[Zerothis]***I'm surprised to find this game listed on many 'worst games of all time' lists. Ya, its insanely hard. And true, the character and enemies moves in plain 2D even though the enemies are (not) placed in a weird pseudo 3D non-existent environment. And, I'll admit, generally hidden/invisible entrances are used for required main levels instead of just secret bonus areas. And, ok, 20 hit points for the first enemy encountered in the game that isn't even a boss and doesn't even have a name, and doesn't even have a face, or a brain, or limbs, or multiple colors, is a bit excessive. Oh and instead of finding a way to the remotest part of the dungeons, grabbing the treasure and being teleported out, the player is teleported into the remotest part of the insanely complex dungeons, loses treasures, and must find their own way out. It could be worse, imagine if it had no continue option (which is easily exploited btw. [spoiler]Start the game, die, then change the first two letters of your continue password to "EF" or "FE".[/spoiler] Wimpy). [b]However, I like it for the challenge[/b], I find the false 3Dishness very retro (by 1986 standards), in a good way. This game proceeded [gameid=9176]The Legend of Zelda[/gameid] and in many ways its better, imo. The size of dungeons and the order of their 'completion' are superior. Deadly towers was actually the 2nd NES game I ever played after Super Mario Bros. It took me about 300 hours to beat. [b]This game gets 4.5 stars by me.[/b]

Undoubtedly this is backstory and the game is set some time later than 1149 and sooner than 1199 (which is the historical beginning of John of England's reign). Probably the murdered king mentioned is Henry II of England, who actually died of natural causes in 1189; but his health was certainly not improved by the actions of his sons, especial Prince John. Never the less, the in-game date begins counting from October 1149. The game takes much dramatic license. The player is one of the six knights mentioned in the story and all of these knights will be battling for England.

Dragon Warrior is called Dragon Quest in Japan. The Japanese version (1986) used passwords but the US (1990) and Canadian versions used battery backed save RAM
A pen and paper RPG called Dragon Quest had already been published in the United States. For copyright reasons, the name Dragon Warrior was used. However, it turns out there was also Dragon Warriors RPG in existence at the time.

The English version was translated and published by Nintendo and [u]strictly[/u] uses Early Modern English [i]in conversational dialogs[/i]. Often mistakenly called King James English or Shakespearian English, but those styles were in fact derived from the Early Modern style (King James style also borrows extensively from Middle English). Early Modern English is in fact a bit more understandable than King James or Shakespearian English, for those who understand the contemporary Modern English of the late 20th century. The Japanese names for the characters and locations were changed into English names that better fit with the Early Modern English and a northern Europeanish location. The changes are influenced by the Arthurian Legends. The Nintendo version also made significant improvement in graphics and game mechanics. The number of menus was reduced. The protagonist could face multiple directions (instead of south only). Direction of talking and actions was automatically based on the direction the protagonist was facing rather than needing to be manually specified. Shorelines looked a bit like breaking waves instead of abrupt hard edges into sea water.

The time you spend leveling is not as long as in its predecessors but its still there and can become a bit tedious. The graphics stay basically the same as before. Here and there a few animations more, but nothing spectacular. The same can be said about the music.***A popular urban myth says that there is a law in Japan that forbids the release of DragonQuest game on a schooldays. While this is sometime attributed to that fact that DragonQuest III caused a huge disruption when release on a schoolday, the fact is that Enix voluntarily decided to not release subsequent DragonQuest games on schooldays before the law went into effect.

The game has 14 full length songs available in the album, Dragon Quest III ~And Into the Legend...~ Remix Symphonic Suite by Sony Records in 1996. Not eligible for a Grammy due to the snubbing of Videogames as an art form.

Chronologically the third game published, and marked "III", but the storyline precedes the first DragonQuest game. It also is set in a different world than its timeline sequels. This world's geography largely parallels Earth and cities vaguely represent different cultures of earth. However it is clearly not earth and while it adheres to an early medieval technology level, it references Earth cultures that span many thousands of years apart from each other.

There are some neat technical tricks in this game, including dozens of characters on-screen without flickering. The story is divided into a Chapter structure. Early chapters introduces a main character (chp 4's main characters are a pair of sisters), has a unique quest for each spanning many years, and hints at the main story and future connections of these characters to come. Later chapters have main characters meeting to fulfill the main quest of the game. DQ3 was very open with character creation, sequential multi-classing, item vault and bank and other features. DQ4 returns to pre-made characters with set classes with a vengeance. But there are some added features to take full advantage of this. One is the wagon. Once the wagon is acquired, many characters, all main characters in fact, can join the party. The player selects and active subset while the rest wait in reserve. No more visiting a town somewhere to swap for a party best suited for the given task (like DQ3).

Swords and sorcery will aid them on their quest; on this final fantasy.***Considering this game was released before Dragon Quest 3, I might say this was the best console RPG on the market at its time, with the exception of [url=http://www.uvlist.net/game-19754-Phantasy+Star]Phantasy Star[/url] perhaps. Graphics and music were very good, you could choose between plenty of character classes and the game told a good story. Today the random encounter rate with all those monster fights might seem too high, but this was a normal thing with early RPG's.***Published in Brazil, catalog number "NES-FF-BZL" is unconfirmed.

Trivia:
In the original Japanese version, Link's grave could be found. Nintendo published both Dragon Warrior and its rival [, this game Final Fantasy] in the USA. They changed a grave to Erdrick's, a hero from the Dragon Warrior game. Later editions for other systems restored Link's grave.***The NES game that started it all. Although heavily hyped by Nintendo at the time of its release, nobody could ever have predicted the soaring heights the series would eventually reach in the minds and hearts of gamers. This game probably did more to advance the cause of console RPGs than perhaps any other - which is surprising in retrospect, as the first FF is a stunningly average game. It has virtually none of the depth or character development that later games - including the two other Japanese-only Famicom/NES releases - would later make the hallmark of the FF name. The combat system is nice, but there's better out there for the NES. Plus, it gets annoying after a while, since you're having encounters at just about every step, especially in the later dungeons. All in all, look at the first Final Fantasy as the grade-schooler's notebook sketchings that eventually lead her to become a great artist.

Relesed December 18, 1987 by Square in Japan and 1989 by Nintendo in the US.***Yeah sure, it looks like crap by today's standards, the story is almost non-existant, there is zero character development, the music is... well... it's an NES for god's sake! But this was my first Japanese RPG (you have no idea how long I had to save my allowance for this) and nothing you say can make me hate it. NOTHING!

There is a really good Final Fantasy One hack called [i]Final Fantasy ++[/i] and its sequel [i]Final Fantasy ++ World of Chaos[/i]. If you're a fan of the game, it's definately worth checking out.

* Redone enemies. (Many are new; some are returning enemies with new properties.)
* Redone magic spells. (Magic is now divided into White, Black, and Time Magic.)

This is the second game in Square's popular Final Fantasy series. It was released only in Japan (the Japanese Final Fantasy IV was released as Final Fantasy II in the U.S.). The game emphasizes the storyline more than the first game: four young refugees from a conquered kingdom join a rebel movement in hopes of striking back at their oppressors. Players must engage in conversion collecting key words to ask key people about in order to advance the plot. Character's have identities and personalities unlike in FF1. This is emphasized by character portraits of all the player characters, the fact that there are many player characters that come and go as their role in the plot dictates, and the frequent use of player characters' names by NPC's. Familial relationships between characters are also frequently noted. The graphics aren't terribly advanced beyond FF1's, but the experience system was completely revamped. Instead of gaining EXP and levels, the heroes gain points in the abilities that they use. Attacking a lot increases strength. Getting hit a lot increases defense. Casting the Fire spell a lot increases the spell's power. Using an axe increase axe fighting ability. An interesting concept (usually reserved for computer RPGs), but one that makes for a difficult game (as long as the endemic exploits of this game's system are not utilized). A translation to English patch for the ROM is available.

Globulation 2 -2004This is an RTS (Real Time Strategy) game designed to reduce micromanagement. The player does not pick out individual citizens to command. But rather, the player specifies how many citizens a task will take and the citizens do their best to fill that number. The player can assign more or less people depending on how fast he wants the task done and what tasks are a high priority.
The citizens in the game are globs. There are worker globs that are the main population. There's also specialized winged explorer blobs that can fly anywhere to take a peek and also drop bombs if their level is sufficient. Finally there are specialized buffed out warrior blobs that can defend and attack other blobs or buildings. Different blobs have different nutritional requirements that can be filled by different foods, some of which are rare in most scenarios, but all blobs need wheat, which is usually common. Buildings need different materials that the workers will need to fetch. There are buildings to teach, general knowledge, swimming, military, and speed. Feeding stations to store and distribute food. Hospitals to heal the sick and wounded. Trade centers to better distributed rare foods. Towers and walls to militantly defend areas. Finally, players can create zones and points of interest to direct workers away from or too an area to explore, attack, defend, or clear vegetation. Interestingly the US version got a little graphical facelift with more detailed platforms and sprites and title screen, but still not enough to make the game good looking. It is the kind of game which I think was not worthwhile for a full prize release in the late 80s. If you fail to collect a Hunter egg the most powerful Shadow Lord will hatch. Take too long to eliminate all the enemies on a level and you will be charged by the pterodactyl that can only be killed by a lance in the mouth. Also there is a lava troll that you and enemies must avoid. 2 players can battle at the same time. Though you can kill each other, there is a bonus if you both survive a level (called waves). Except for gladiator waves where the bonus goes only to a single surviving player. There are also bonus waves where all enemies start as eggs. Points are multiplied for successive kills, egg collections, egg catches and such.

One of 4 prototypes presented by Nintendo to Atari as part of their deal to partner with them to bring the Famicom to North America. The potential deal was forgotten and ignored moments later as Atari began to considered that the 1983-84 video game market crash was possibly the end of videogames rather than a long-term pause in the market. Most annoying thing is the knockback when you are hit by enemies, often resulting in falling down into lava or taking more hits. The game is rather difficult. Many secret rooms, non-linearity and a good presentation make this an overall good and interesting game though. The music and graphics fit the game and are nice for its time.***[b]androgynous character[/b] - Samus herself, many were shocked to find out the person inside the powerarmor was a girl (and this supposedly ruined the game for them as well).***Samus is a Space Hunter (bounty hunter) and she's out to kill the Mother Brain who leads the various Metroid on planet Zebes. Explore 23% of the planet. Shoot anything the moves and a few things that don't. Find all the alien technology and use it to defeat the Mother Brain. Some areas are horizontal scrolling, some vertical. This game allows non-linear exploration and progress.

There are multiple endings depending on how quickly the game is beaten. The endings can be summed up as: Samus is ashame d of you (because you were so slow), Space Suit Samus, Helmetless Samus, Leotard Samus, Bikini Samus. No, there isn't a nude Samus ending, she isn't even allowed to show her bellybutton (which is usual for videogames). However, the Famicom version features a different Bikini Samus in a much, much smaller Bikini.

The back of the box falsely claims there is a 2 player alternating option. The FDS version saved progress in files on the magnetic FDS disks. The development team wanted to use save RAM like Zelda. But Nintendo would not authorize the added expense because FDS Metroid had not been a big seller.

First game to use passwords for game saving?

The surface is only one screen in size, not really an 'overworld' like in Angband and other roguelikes based on this game. UNIX Moria also served as inspiration for the design of Diablo. Moria was created using VMS Pascal ("Moria") when Robert Alan Koeneke and Jimmey Wayne Todd found that Rogue, their addiction at the time, was not available on VAX-11/780 minicomputers. UNIX Moria (umoria) is a port of "Moria" written in C language. Many subsequent ports and forks of "Moria" were based on umoria. The original license permitting sharing and modification but not commercial use. At some point, an agreement was reached by every person who ever maintained Moria to release its source code under the GPL license. Linux umoria has since become the standard version of sorts and is even called "Moria" by the current maintainer. Although, it is still a actively maintained VAX/VMS game.

Sadly, two weeks before production, he made the game easier by giving Harry multiple lives. Still, this is one of the most challenging games for the 2600, very few gamers have gotten all 32 treasures in the alloted 20 minutes. The world record for the fastest time is 18:52. (1:06 left on the clock). The best player in the world can only achieve a time that is 5.66% faster than required.

A 'Perfect Game' can be achieved by collecting all 32 treasures and never dying, never falling and never being damaged by a hostile object. The resulting score will be 114,000. There are 256 screens that connect end to end (screen 1 connects to screen 256). The underground (tunnels) skip around the ring of screens in a different order than the overworld. You can go left or right on any screen that doesn't have a brick wall in the way. The general consensus is that it is easier to go left from the starting screen because of the direction logs travel and dying starts you on the left side of the screen. However, to take the most efficient path to get all the treasures in time, start by going right. Also, unless you have a photographic memory, make a map.

There are many hacks available for download. Here is a few of the notable ones.
Pitfall Trainer: Timer removed & INF Lives, usefully cheat for cartography and practice.
Jungle Jane: A faster, meaner, better sounding, more colorful version with a female star.
Enhanced Pitfall +: 3 levels of difficulty, including 'Practice'. Scorpions climb ladders and travel screen to screen. There are additional treasures and enemies. Underground tunnels are smaller.
Bottomless Pitfall: Graphically enhanced. Can't go left from the start. Logs roll both ways. You restart a screen (after dying) from the side you entered. 10 hour clock and unlimited treasures, so a maximum scores are much more varied. Harry has hit points.

The rattlesnakes are not out of place in this game's setting, they are crotalus durissus, found in most countries in South America.

Considered a classic by some, Rock N Roll Racing flew under the radar of most gamers due to minimal publicity. With a combination of interesting characters, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi feel, running commentary by "Loudmouth" Larry Huffman, a series of cars that could be purchased and upgraded as you win cash, and a classic rock soundtrack, it's hard to dislike the game. Just watch out for missiles from behind!

A remake of Racing Destruction Set. This game was also preceded by the similar [game=#8126]RC Pro-Am[/game]. Race on isometrically viewed tracks constructed from a limited number of pieces of the same width.
Improvements over RC Pro-Am include:
Three levels of difficulty.
1 or 2 players simultaneously via split-screen.
An additional 1-2 player verses split-screen mode.
Armor/Hit points (vehicles don't explode with only one hit).
Collisions cause damage at all times.
Only money and armor repair power ups are collected from the track. All other upgrades are purchased between races.

Rubberband and nitro powerups for AI opponents when they fall behind. It is possible to lap opponents.
AI opponents upgrade their vehicles on a schedule instead of matching the player's choice. So upgrading is an advantage.

Quirks:
Passwords only save 6 digits of cash, if you acquire more than that, only the last 2 digits are saved. So $999,950 is saved but $9,999,950 becomes $50.
Some created passwords can cause the game to crash at random.
You may enter the same password for players 1 and 2 at the same time.
Dirty connectors or cheat devices can cause the game to play in different mode where all powerups can be collected from the track. Presumably this mode was part of an earlier version of the game that was not fully removed before production. This 'powerup mode' crashes randomly.
