Active pause

Video game concept

Player is able to issue farther commands even when the game has been paused.

Alternate names: Pausable real-time, Real-time with pause

The first video game about Active pause was released on July 15, 1997.

Atari, Beamdog and Paradox Interactive has published most of these games

Unlike regular pause, this is actually meant to be used as a gameplay mechanic instead of just something to pause the game so you can do something else unrelated to the game.

See autopause for game effectively pausing during certain actions, such as inventory access, dialogs, or in-game menus.
