Although not generally appealing to touch or eat in western societies which usually think of most insects as pests. There are notable exceptions. Ladybugs (a beetle), butterflies, some caterpillars, and occasionally dragonflies are considered less repulsive to touch. Walking sticks, praying mantis, caterpillars (usually released at the butterfly stage), ants, and occasionally cockroaches are kept as pets. Insects are rarely considered domestic as they generally do not adapt to domestic life, keepers instead adapt to the needs of the wild insects.

Scorpions, millipedes, spiders. pill bugs, hermit crabs, and crabs are arthropods and not insects. These are also sometimes kept as pets.

Some people collect and mount Butterflies, damsel flies, dragonflies, or beetles, as a hobby.
