Generally plants that move about on their own, communicate (even if unitelligibly like animals), or plant-like creatures that are sentient. Taxonomically (scientifically) these would probably be called animals despite their appearance.
Much like crystalline creatures, these are commonly thought to be impossible (outside of mimicking the shape and color, as some insects are known to do).
