"Linux" refers to a group of computer operating systems based on the Linux kernel created 1991 by Linus Torvalds and usually packaged with non-proprietary software originating from the GNU project (created 1983, GNU stands for GNU's Not Unix) or using software licenses approved by said project. GNU/Linux is a more accurate term for a package of GNU applications and a Linux kernel that form a complete operating system. However, popular media and several prominent operating system vender's commonly use the term "Linux" instead of "GNU/Linux". The Linux kernel can be compiled to run on virtually any hardware or CPU architecture including supercomputers, mainframes, web servers, desktop PCs, game consoles, set-top boxes, network routers, mobile phones, wristwatches, PDAs, portable music players, and more.
